In the UK, being married is the only way of ensuring a fair settlement should a couple split up. Co-habitees have no legal rights whatsoever.
That said, marriage rates in the UK are plummeting.
Do we need it or want it? There's no straight answer, but I know if I ever live with someone I'll get a contract drawn up before I move in. I'm not interested in getting married myself, but I know from experience the law does not favour or protect the likes of me. |
