Off topic:

Is there past precedent for this in the comic industry? I can only think of novelists being given comparable treatment (King and Clancy come to mind).

I can say for a fact there is precedent for this:

On Topic:

I picked up Kid E on ebay cheap a few years back, liked it for the most part, art was a bit confusing, but that made it feel a bit creepier. I think reading it under a blanket with a flashlight would be the way to go.

Matt: Anyways, I agree: I'd rather have it in my hand. But I can't afford it.

Same with me, money's thin, but I'm trying to pick a couple things I can grab to keep myself from getting the North American consumerist blues.

Also, most public libraries take in requests from patrons (I work at one) to order new materials in. And graphic novels are becoming particularly popular (partly because they encourage literacy amongst some demographics not given to it). The system I work for is ordering quite a few nowadays. It doesn't cost the patron anything beyond the tax money already going towards the library.

Sounds kind of interesting. I'll probably pick it up 'cos Duncan Fegredo is a sweetheart.

I wonder if the reason they are finally reprinting this mini is because they have plans for the character... he did appear in Titans an issue or so back.

I read lotsa my comics on the bus, as I have quite a lot of bus time. Funnily enough, I felt "sadder" reading the Da Vinci Code on the bus than Spidey or the Invisbles or V or anything else. At least when you're a grown man reading a comic, you can go "Yeah, fuck you, I'm a grown man reading a comic," if anyone gets in your face about it -- I get that in the office though. Someone called V for Vendetta a 'picture book' the other day, very patronisingly and on purpose. I was so angry/offended I couldn't think of what to say. How do you explain to a middle aged, middle class woman what comics are about? -- Although they won't, at worst, they'll probably be a muttery and passive agressive at the back of the bus. And that's why God made headphones.

Soooo... back to Kid eternity. I tried reading it (DLed it, naughty boy), but found it much too messy on the screen (like V is too tight and small, some things you need on paper). I will buy it though, as like Matt, I haven't read anything by Georgie that I haven't liked, and will continue to do so, till he hits a crap patch. btw, I usually love Duncan Fredrego (sp?) too, he did a Batman story a while back, and his style is lovely. He also did the Jay and Silent Bob mini from Oni... I like his 'normal' art, but I'm not 100% on his painted stuff.

I have the originals, and seem to remember they were broken into 'Cantos' half way through each issue.

Given the title pages etc, it rather made me think that the three-issue 48pg prestige format series was instead originally intended to be a six-issue 23pg miniseries… anyone know if this is the case?

It's great to see this thread again and be reminded of this. Definitely the next thing I'm buying when I get to the comic shop.

Is the paperback out already?

Well the one in my local comic shop isn't the version that's just been/is being released, (because it's been in there for ages.) so it must be an older one.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

This came out today.

I've got two pages to go. I will need to reread this to get all of it. I...at times the Fegredo is a bit discombobulated - at times it's so beautiful, but at other moments I think I prefer The Enigma. But. But. But.

I think I finally get the thing with raving priest, but I think it could have been threaded through a little bit more, some indication earlier on...mind you, I might have missed something.

Makes me wish I could have written the Kid Eternity series. What would I have done differently than Nocenti?

I remember KE eating rotten food in the first issue. Turned me right off again. The Invisbles ate excellent cuisine at the chateau of their sponsor. Please keep that in mind for your rewrite.

Is that where the sentient psychedelic mushroom came into it? Because I remember thinking that was particularly...off. Well, it seemed like a Shade ripoff...

A couple of questions and observations on rereading Kid Eternity:

1. The writer of horror stories that the Kid takes Jerry to see, the one who holds the maps of Hell. He reminds me of a Paul Auster character, or that fellow from the Sandman story "Calliope," the one that Dream curses to infinite inspiration.

2. The writer makes reference to "the Stranger" coming to look at the maps, once. Phantom Stranger? It's an off-hand reference, but given the timing of when Kid Eternity was originally published...

3. Is Jerry meant to be inspired by Jerry Seinfeld?

4. The conclusion is still muddy. Val Hoffman's sequences seem like something out of Shade the Changing Man, as she's followed around by her own urban legends; reminds me of a Madness Stream infecting people. What exactly induces this madness? Is it the Shichiriron?

5. There was a bit of confusion over the preacher versus the Ripper, and why exactly he was following Jerry. Was he supposed to be influenced by the Lords of Order (as they have that hierarchical religion element to them) to prevent the Kid from helping initiate humanity's evolution (by killing Jerry?).

6. The Kid = Kid(d) from Dhalgren?

7. I still quite love the invocation of Eternity to summon the Kid from Hell. Love that whole sequence, and the way he jumps into Jerry's head.

My local comic shop says this trade isn't out yet. Are they lying to me because they hate all the money I give them or are they fucking idiots?

I bought my Titan TPB a couple of weeks back from Amazon.co.uk. Its been out in America and the US for a while now. What country are you in?

I did like Nocenti's single-issue story on love, loss, heartbreak, etc. (KE ongoing series #2, perhaps?) Something about it was especially good...or maybe it was only because I was much younger and heartbroken or something at the time when I bought/read it.

The USA, believe it or not. It has indeed been out forever. My comic shop's owner must be braindead.

Got this in the end and really liked it. Not as much as I was hoping, but that's probably because I like to get right into Grants stories, and this is pretty short. I've got the urge to go straight back and re-read the thing though, which doesn't happy very often nowadays, and is a welcome urge. Will maybe add more if/when I've done that.

The part where Kid finds out what's really going on and the explanation of it was easily my fave part though, on first reading.

I found this in the other thread from Haus :

I think Nocenti's run lasted about 16 issues. But be warned - they are something of an acquired taste...

I'd love to try and track this down, but after reading it got cancelled I'm a bit wary. The main thing I'm wondering is : did we get any type of conclusion before it got cancelled or did it just get stopped without anything being wrapped up?

Also : was the artwork in Grants run different before the TPB, and if so how different? Has anyone got any old pics?

It came to a hasty conclusion in the last two issues, IIRC, with plot threads that had been untouched since #2 suddenly brought in and finished. It's neither Nocenti or Phillips's finest hour; generally incoherent and doesn't add up to much. I've got them buried in a box somewhere and I think offered them to swap on another thread. It would probably be months before I could unearth them, though...

I've found, by and large, that the painted covers are the best thing about the Nocenti/Phillips series. Otherwise, it's a bit on the dreckish side - watered down Shade the Changing Man mixed with the Morrison/Fegredo series.

Thanks for the info, will probably check out Animal Man next then instead, and maybe have a look for the Nocenti stuff in the near future.
