What is it today for the uk and Ireland, lunar eclipse? new moon?

Here it is "11.45 und 13.45 Uhr", so Ireland and UK must be 11.45 am - 01.45 pm.

And it´s a solar eclipse.

Will the solar eclipse actually be obvious here? Will we be plunged into darkness? That would be cool - but I thought it wasn't going to be such a big deal here?

ah - finally found some info. Unless I get to the Mediterranean PDQ, it'll only be a little bit of an eclipse. What a shame.

Why, when I look down the tv schedules, do I see that the PAUL O'GRADY SHOW is on at 5pm on ITV and the NEW PAUL O'GRADY SHOW is on at 5pm on C4?

He's competing with himself for viewers? It's a bid for teledomination and he will shortly be reading the news on BBC1 and mud wrestling with Anne Robinson on BBC2, all four at once?

I am befuddled and bemused.

Xoc - He moved to Channel 4 in a shock deal, shock for ITV as he was gubbing Richard and Judy in the ratings so C4 offered more money, now half the year will be his show and the other half Richard and Judy at least I think that's what going to happen can't be sure as I'm working in the office and not at home this week. ITV will still own the rights to the shows he did with them - same thing often happened with Trisha being on ITV and Channel 5, until ITV got that awful awful Jeremy Kyle or whatever his name is....

Earlier this week we also had the Rockford Files on BBC2 and ITV at the same time... I think certain shows are broken down and channels own certain episodes... Quincy is sometimes on BBC and sometimes on ITV... although Quincy seems to have been dropped complety with afternoon choices now Monk on BBC1 (not bad) Poriot on ITV (shite) and sometimes if lucky Columbo on C5 (the bestest!)

Nobody has had the sense to bring back Banacek yet though.

I've searched google, dictionary and wikipedia, and I cannae find anything which clears up the term "metonymic bridge" (which Haus dropped in here).

I don't think I've heard the "bridge" part before, but a metonym is a kind of indirect description where a part of the thing stands for the whole: when the footman acts on "orders from the Crown," it means "orders from the King/Queen," and when the cowboy says "I'm bringing 80 head to market," it means "I'm bringing 80 cows to market."

I'd assume a metonymic bridge is the concrete concept that connects the image to the thing being described. In the example in that thread, it's unclear what component of anger is like a sword.

But that's just a guess.

Thank you, Bear.

You are more informative and much sexier than the Radio Times (except the editions with John Simm as Playmate of the Month).

In the example in that thread, it's unclear what component of anger is like a sword.

Why, the "edge", of course. The way it can be used to "hurt" people, to "strike" at them. I thought it was obvious.

But a metaphor does not have to be metonymic, does it?

(ps. I'm not being sarcastic, I really want to know)

We called them Weirdos in my neck of the woods.

I only ever had one, and I cut all its hair off. I'm not sure why.

I don´t know about gonks and weirdos. I google pictured them both. Gonks spit out lots of pictures of some psychedelic 60s band. Weirdos resluted in photos of people, who tried and failed to look weird.

The other day I saw a link in a thread to a movie blog with the coolest article on Underworld: Evolution, relating it to moral relativism, death rituals on yester times and a whole lot more. I can't remember the name of the site, and I can't seem to find the thread in which it was linked (I guess it was on the MOvie forum, but could not be). The search function ain't helping. Does anybody know what i'm talking about? I want to re-find that site.

Actually, never mind. Google saved me (Google is God).

In case anyone got curious, the name of the site is metaphilm. Looks like a cool place to hang.

Jub: My SO's car window got smashed today - does anyone know the best way to remedy this situation? Any good advice on cheap windo fitters?

Are they not covered under their car insurance? Most policies include windscreen/window cover whereby you only pay the first 50/60 quid. Window claims also shouldn't affect your no claims bonus. The other advantage is that they'll sort everything out for you.

If not, my only other advice is that it's generally much cheaper to go with small-time companies from the Yellow Pages etc than big companies like RAC Auto WIndscreens. Fitting a new window is one of those jobs where price is pretty much the only factor to consider as everybody will do an identical job, so I'd just phone around three randomly picked small-time operations and go with the cheapest.

Is it bad form to ask if anyone on Barbelith has an MP3 of a particular tune, and whether they could Email me a copy?

Given that the Music forum recently had a spate of threads *based* on mp3 sharing, I think that sounds fine.

Cheers, grant. I hadn't seen those threads, but will go and find them now and ask if anyone's got a copy of the tune I'm looking for. Much obliged.

Erm... I just realised what you meant, grant, (*based* on mp3 sharing) and I can't find a suitable thread to place my request. I'd start a new one specifically for MP3 swapping, but due to the illegality of MP3 downloading (etc), I'm not sure if that would be a good thread to have on Barbelith. Help?

We have a CD swap in music maybe you could offer up a CD if someone has the tune you want- you could get the said track plus some other goodies- or there is another thread called Barbelith music clearing house- could put it up there and ask if someone has it- kind of perfect for your request i'd say PW...

Hello there! Could some sweet, helpful soul tell me what the fuck 'instinctual renunciation' means? The renunciation of instinct most obviously but is it a pre-established term?

Depends on the time of year, but probably the opposite for a long chunk of time, a la Alaska - looooooooooong days, very short nights if any at all.
