Oh dear. No intent to offend intended.

Truth be told, I couldn't imagine anyone actually could be offended by the term "herring choker." Or that this was contrary to Barbelith policy.

Even so, I'll keep it in mind.

Yes, feel free to quote me if you ever need to in another instance... sorry for delay! Work got in the way.

It appears that somebody is finding obsolete Hotmail accounts, requesting passwords, using those accounts to get passwords for old suits, and using those suits to seek attention. This is, of course, fraudulent, and we'll probably end up having to delete all the old Hotmail-based accounts, and/or report that person to their college authorities, their ISP and Hotmail itself. Sad, but then life sometimes is.

I think it more likely that somebody has registered a whole load of accounts in 2001 and is now returning to them as and when.

Shouldn't be the case - Tom wiped all accounts that had never posted despite having been signed up for a certain length of time when we were having the major troll problems. That was just after we'd already closed the board to new membership.

If it were one person with a bunch of suits in reserve, I think we'd be facing a far more serious problem than this.

Did he? I remember talk about it, but I don't remember it happening, due to the difficulty of determining who was active and who wasn't.

If it comes down to something having happened with Barbelith and something not having happened, 99.9% of the time it's going to be that nothing happened.

Also, Hotmail definitely *are* quite serious about deleting obsolete accounts. There is no way they'd survive for years. And not everyone on Hotmail has an easily-guessed password. And there is no easy way of cracking the ones that aren't easily guessed.

Just because a Hotmail account hasn't been used on Barbelith for ages doesn't mean it's not been used, though.

Although paradoxically, being given a hard and fast example of what we were talking about has kind of taken us all off topic, though, hasn't it?

I like that you pointed yr thread starter here, Stoat. Gives it some purpose.
