There´s a new album by Leaves´ Eyes called Vinland Saga. It´s goth metal, about vikings and could be the soundtrack for this thread. And the singer Liv Kristin is from Norway!

Maybe we should have a favourite Barbarian/Viking/Vandal/Pirate music thread?

I must now get all up in your shit with a nithing-post.

Damn. You Viking scholars are almost as tough as the actual thing. What would Eigil do?

There must be some good Viking-related music out there. Not death/black/darque metal or Led Zep or Kiww da Wabbit, I mean.

All pirates were undoubtedly barbarians but not all barbarrans were pirates. No barbarians were ninjas though. I mean wtf? Some just had very deep voices and liked killing livestock with spoons.

Alliterate. Or possibly mete out smashy DEATH, and then alliterate.

This thread is making me regret that I'll not be hieing myself thither to Lewes for Firework night this year to quaff, revel in loud explosions under a sizzling flare, and above all, watch Vikings parade along the main street with fiery skull'n'bones held aloft with legends proclaiming "Death Or Glory".

If that latter doesn't cement the Viking/Pirate axis firmly, I don't know what does.

Mordant- weeeeellll... there were 6th Comm, but they're fucking Nazis. Properly Viking, though: "Hagged Vitki has spoken/ Niding the Ausland". Twats. 2nd-rate Depeche Mode-sounding twats, at that.

(Mist- Are Leaves' Eyes any good? I only know of them from their singer appearing on the last CoF album...)

Actually, Mordant- kiww da wabbit aside3, what's wrong with a good ol' blast of Wagner? In the last year-and-a-half I've seen the entire Ring Cycle... and boy, did it rock. (Even given Phyllida Lloyd's often-misjudged, often-stupid, sometimes-ace staging).

There's always Bob Calvert's "Lucky Leif And The Longships" album - a space rock album redone as an acid-fried cod-Norse saga concept album about discovering Greenland. Yes, it finishes with a track called "Ragnarok", which does.

That and the song "Surf Raiding", in which a chorus of Beach Boys-impersonating Hawkind members croon: "Surf Surf Raidin'/Keen on the keel/Surf Surf raidin'/It's gotta far-out feel/High drogue heroes/Valhalla bound/You gotta admit that we get around".

NO FUCKING WAY!!!!!!!!!

Next you'll be dissing Jim Steinman.

And if that happens, honour demands WE MUST FIGHT.

But who will soundtrack the fight?

Okay, apart from the half-hour's worth of rockin' material, Wagner is boring. All talky Gods and then syrupy love-themes. There's only a few really good smashy bits.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

I disagree. (Though I think Mr W was wrong in painting Siegfried as a hero... to be fair, Mime was well within his rights to try and kill the ungrateful little fuck... and just WHAT was Brunnhilde THINKING???)

But you're shying away from the Steinman question.

Anyway, the important thing is that Vikings did not go Viking in Winter, and so Nick is wrong.

Tango-Mango- can you imagine a fight soundtracked by Wagner AND Steinman?

Whoah.

Neither can I.

But it'd be good.

I own their first album Lovelorn, and I like it very much. Liv has a nice voice, sings way better than she did with Theatre of Tragedy. And it´s more mature than that early stuff. And her husband grunts olny a little over the songs.

To be on topic: her husband Alex Krull looks 100% a viking with hair down to his knees.

STRONG VIKING TRUTH!

Close the door, put out the light.
You know they won't be home tonight.
The snow falls hard and don't you know?
The winds of Thor are blowing cold.
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through.

They choose the path where no-one goes.

They hold no quarter.

Walking side by side with death, The devil mocks their every step
The snow drives back the foot that's slow, The dogs of doom are howling more
They carry news that must get through, To build a dream for me and you

They choose the path where no-one goes.

They hold no quarter. They ask no quarter.
The pain, the pain without quarter.
They ask no quarter.
The dogs of doom are howling more!

The Crown Prince of Denmark (Frederik the Honey) has just had a baby boy by the way. On a sesame seed bun with mustard.

I'm not sure if Santa's doing the reverse thing on purpose, or if he just misunderstood his instructions.

Either way, have you ever seen Icelandinc Christmas? They have twelve Santas (the Yule Lads). AND THEY'RE ALL EEEVIL!!!

I so have to live there. I have to. I love it so.

Oh yes. There definetely needs to be REVERSE Santas. Dressed in leather and sporting unkempt (fat)beards.

The Icelandic Yule lads dress like Santa but they nick stuff. And worry sheep. And stuff like that.

There's also the Christmas Cat, who eats children who aren't wearing a new item of clothing on Christmas Eve. (Part of me thinks this is just a ploy to get kids to wear the new jumper their parents have bought them to go to church on Christmas Day... but I tell that part of me to fuck off on a regular basis).

I wasn't actually going to have a pop at Steinman; his ferocious and almost impasto use of metaphor is worthy of respect. But now I'm tempted to say mean things about him just to piss you off.
