Er, to be on-topic if I may... I loved the Two Ronnies as a kid, and after watching the recent reunion shows, suggested that their Best Of.. DVD might make a good birthday present from my girlfriend. And she actually got me it. So, having recently watched it in its entirety, I can say that, no, not every sketch is a classic, but I do rate Ronnie Barker as a performer and therefore am sad he is dead.
There's something in watching those old shows (Open All Hours, 'Allo 'Allo etc) that, whilst maybe not exactly the cutting-edge of comedy and PC-thinking, can have a re-assuring nostalgic appeal and a charm of their own. I get similar feelings watching Carry On films. Like, there are some genuinely inspired and funny moments (I'm thinking of the end of ..Up the Khyber) but mostly it's a slew of lame innuendos that still make me laugh (mainly because I can't believe that this was what passed for top entertainment at the time - I mean, people went to the cinema and paid good money to see them!). The Good Life is actually much better than you might think you remember it being (there's definitely some filthy suburban swingers subtext in there).

The Young Ones
Vic Reeves Big Night Out
Absolutely
(And, IMHO, Fawlty Towers and Blackadder have always been overrated....) |
