Ah... only comics could possibly ask the question "is x too smart for comics?" Bless.

Ah, but this is lovely:

You recently married a wonderful woman. Congratulations! Are there any li'l Grants on the way? Alan Moore's daughter is now writing. I think your child would be welcomed into the world as a future talent!

Uncritically.

Is this your real name, Finderwolf?

I have a few college degrees including Master's fields in Political Science and History, and have an IQ that I am proud of, for whatever that is worth.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. See also your college degrees.

This interviewer is great.

Oh, I thought that Popthought bit was one of the most fascinating Grant interviews I've ever read. And I've read a hella lot.

Some great answers in the mix there.

I was slightly reminded of the guy on The Actor's Studio on the Performance Channel, who remorselessly grills his subjects with a line of sycophantic questioning which made Barry Norman's Michelle Pfeiffer interview ("What's it like being the most beautiful woman in the world?") seem like Paxman doing Michael Howard. With a strap-on.

George came across quite well, though, I thought. No mention of swingball.

You know you've made it when any incoherence in your writing is automatically regarded as a problem with your READERS and not your WRITING...

'I found Seaguy confusing - what's wrong with me?'

Perish the thought that it could be something wrong with the comic.

Interesting stuff from the interviews...

From Pop Thought:

My own personal taste doesn't run to literal work or stuff where everything's neatly explained to me and tied in a 'clever' bow. The world's a big, wild mess and I like to reflect that.

I find this one interesting, because I remember another interview where he complains about readers being incapable of understanding metaphors and complaining about the rise of reality TV because reality lacks structure and other stuff. He is contradicting himself a bit here, I think. Then again, my memory barely works so it is possible I imagined the other interview and I am talking completely out of my hiney.

And from The Pulse:

"Some readers have speculated that the Sheeda are an extra-dimensional threat but in actual fact they're from the same dimension and the same planet as everyone else in our story," continued Morrison. "Who and what the Sheeda really are is one of the narrative strands - the secret origin of Faerie, if you like. The only proper extra-dimensionals in Seven Soldiers are the mysterious Seven Unknown Men - all of whom have previously appeared in various DC books from the last 40 years but not all together," continued Morrison. "And no, I don't think anyone will ever guess where these characters first appeared, nor does it matter, to be honest."

Well, I like to think Phantom Stranger is one of the seven mystery guys. And about the Sheeda... hmmm... either a civilization from the future pillaging the past, or a civilization from the past pillaging the future, perhaps?

Only the schizophrenic ones. Readers, that is.

Yes, yes, that's the one! So at least I know the interview exists... now whether the contents resemble what I remember about it it's another story entirely.

Well, but, as he says, you could just like read the pages and see what happens on each one. And that's what happens.

The esoteric point of the comic may yet be beyond you, but you can probably make something semi-satisfactory up.

thanks, Stone, made my day.

oh, this again? what's incoherent about SEAGUY? the story and its layers are pretty much there, and easily identifiable. it's easier than THE FILTH.

I didn't actually find Seaguy incoherent, or difficult, but there is a sort of slightly unsatisfying lurch in the plot about three pages from the end there. Is all I'm sayin'.

wow. that PopThought interview is ... wow.

that interviewer has his nose so far up GM's ass it's like he's digging for Jimmy Hoffa, and that seems to feed GM's own colossal ego in such a way that it becomes a perfect storm of asskissing. finally, George has met someone who likes to talk about his own brilliance as much as he does.

Topic on the claim made in an Arthur interview that schizophrenics can't process metaphor. You can tell a lot about the worth of a human being by their contribution to that thread.

So Grant likes his writing to resemble life... but not that much?

I'm not terribly sure the fact of George's nuptials requires mentioning at all, much less the quality of the woman he married. Now I'm wondering how the interviewer knows Kristen's wunnerful...

>> In fact, one of Grant's appealing aspects to me is his ability to entertain my heart and soul and to inspire my mind.

Wow, this really IS a bit much (just started to read the interview). The interviewer also talks about the 'unfathomable depths' of Morrison's work -- it's one thing to praise the person you're interviewing a bit in a professional way, it's another to give them poorly written gawkish praise. But hey, it's an interview and Grant does his thing, so that's fun.

hey, Ganesh, looks like you don't read much rock stars interviews these days...
I think that particular GM interview was quite nice and humble compared to interviews of some hacks who don't sell a single record or realtv people with a single brain cell, even with the obvious asslicking...
I think more interviews should be made that way.
The Spectacle, you know...

And well. Kristan is... well... ok, look at her...

Louisemichel...Did you post that in the wrong thread by accident?

No-one's mentioned Morrison's "rock star" interview style, least of all Ganesh. While it is an arguably valid comment on the cult of personality Grant so enjoys building around himself, it's not one which has thus far been made here; the only significant criticisms which have been made in this thread are (justifiably) directed at the interviewer. There's a fine line between "respectful" and "fawning", and lines like In fact, one of Grant's appealing aspects to me is his ability to entertain my heart and soul and to inspire my mind. don't so much cross that line as enthusiastically hurl themselves over it.

Looks like I don't. I'm having trouble seeing the relevance of this, however.

It's nice that you think that. To me, it's Hello! style ingratiating-verging-on-creepy. But hey ho.

And well. Kristan is... well... ok, look at her...

Kristen's arguable hubbahubbableness is entirely beside the point.

20:12 / 07.09.05
and why would it be beside the point ?
Everyday we read love or sex stories of so-called famous people in the tabloids or in the more serious genre press (be it Music, Sports and so on, Posh Spice and Beckham, Tom Cruise and his bitches... ok, covered music, sports and kino, good one. ok, maybe not music...).
Why not comics ? Would it be the ONLY quadrant of entertainment without trash press or that little excess ?

Good looking or bad looking, Kristan was a part of this interview. It's not beside the point.
And I happen to think she's good looking.
Wanna sue me for that ?
you can burn me at the stake, though...

I'd argue that it'd be nice if comics could remain free from the more tawdry excesses of tabloid-style journalism, yes.

or his Contract Girls.

I'm all for Celebrity Culture in Comics, as long as it doesn't go the way of the Modern Gods Pantheon that Hollywood and The Record Industry are.

on the other hand is good to have some people's private lives preserved. at least some aspects of them. being a GM fanboy for ages and wannabe writer, I don't mind learning some details about Grant's work routine.

this is also a case - as the interview stresses - os the guy's life merging with the work in many ways than it's clear to most readers. the interviewer is clearly a fanboy and was unashamed to conduct the talk as such. I've been there myself a couple of years ago, know the feeling...

"I'd argue that it'd be nice if comics could remain free from the more tawdry excesses of tabloid-style journalism, yes."

I think we all want comics as a medium to be more successful, to be in par with video games, kino, music, but it's strange not to want what makes these medium THAT successful. And it's gossip.
I symplify, of course, but you know what I mean... Hollywood soared with the stars, not the movies...
