Well, I wouldn't recommend that you investigate Torrents, installing a manager program and then going to one of the many sites like TorrentSpy and searching.

Because that would be EVIL and WRONG.

Does anyone know if characters from Baldur's Gate 2 can be transferred to Icewind Dale 1 or 2?

um... I seem to have lost my CD2 of Pirates! and would loove to play it again right now...

Anyone want to send me a new one? I'll send you something nice or something?

PM me...

I'm intrigued by Half-Life 2 and hope to buy it soon, but I've never played Half-Life (the first). Should I bother? PC version or PS2? New Souurce version or find the Old-School version?

I would suggest you spend a month or so doing the first one, as it has some of the creepiest moments of any game I have ever played. And that ending? Brrrrr...
Unfortunately I have a moratorium on new games until I finish the ones I have already bought, so I can't tell you about HL2.

Lekvar: yes, and, as long as you've got the technology, either PC version. The original still looks OK because modern computers can run it at its top resolution, no sweat; don't know about the Steam remake. PS2 is quite lores and clunky, so stay away.

Is City of Heroes any good, in the opinion of experienced online gamers?

I stayed away as the support in Beta testing was "if you can't get it to work, piss off, we don't care". I'm not willing to risk subscribing to such a service. I've heard good things baout the gameplay, but apparently it gets repetetive after a while. What the hell, though, Urban Dead is nothing but repetetive and it's kept me going for months.

lekvar: I just picked up Half Life 2 for X-Box and yeah it's a lil' clunky but still very enjoyable. Maybe a holiday gift-list idea if you have that sort of thing?

I played City of Heroes for about six months and it can be a lot of fun if you've got a good group to play it with, like all MMPORG's really. Not too difficult to pick up a good pick-up group either as long as you learn the signs of groups to avoid . Also City of Villians has just come out and I think you get CoH free with it so it's a worthwhile purchase IMHO.

Only reason I stopped playing it was that it was eating my life .

City of Heros certainly looked amusing, but not enough to make me break my no-MMORPG rule. But City of Villains is seriously putting my willpower to the test. Did I read correctly? You get to build your very own Evil Villain Lair?!?

On Far Cry. You're on a sinking radar ship. How the fuck do you beat Crow in his helicopter? How? There's nowhere to run to, at all, you can't aim because the chopper moves too fast, and what kind of fucking chopper can stand three shots of a missile launcher?

Sorry, mate, but that's exactly how far I got in FC too...

Sounds a bit like it might be the same bug that plagues GTA:SA. There, there are missions that are utterly impossible because everythng moves too fast. The trick is to drop down all the video settings to the lowest possible, then it's easy. Might be worth a try on FC.

Oh, I don't think it's a bug. I suspected as much for a while, but looked at a couple of walkthroughs online, and it appears it's just bloody difficult.

I seem to remember the best I managed was firing all the rockets at the chopper, then swimming (quite deep, cos the fucker's still shooting at you) to shore, where there are some rocks and stuff to provide cover. I seemed to be getting somewhere... just not far enough!

I also can't get past the boss at the end of Hell in Doom 3 on the Xbox... I know how to deal with him... I'm just not very good at putting it into practice.

any ideas about the costs of running a major football team?
any idea where one might go a-googling?

Teams Like Manchester United are PLCs. They have to publish annual reports that can be inspected by the public.

I think Real Madrid might be a special case in their finances as, according to a friend who supports them, they are propped up by the government, being a source of national pride and all(unless you're Basque). I don't know how true that is but they've certainly some dodgy property dealings with the City of Madrid (something to do with their training ground and planning laws...).

I've worked it so that when I load up, the ship and surrounding area are clear of all enemies. So that relieves the frustration of having to kill sniper guy and rocket guy and the two orange guys every time you load.

I tried bringing a patrol boat round and leaving it at the bottom of the rope ladder, so that when I set the bomb I could hop into it and either use it's mounted heavy gatling gun or use it to escape to the (lovely, safe, cosy) base about 200 metres away to get a better chance against crow.

However, the patrol boat breaks as soon as you set the bomb, never mind when it blows! I might check that one again, but I'm pretty sure of it.

I tried jumping off after setting the bomb and swimming to the wrecked tugboat, but to no avail. To be honest it took too long and I didn't have my wits together enough by the time I got there. What gets me is how resilient he is: I got him with three/four rockets and he still wouldn't go down.

Shall we have a Far Cry thread? I think we might. Do you want to start it Stoat, or shall I?

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

You start it... I haven't played the PC version in a while, so I must attempt to dig it out and start again, but if you start the thread I promise I'll join in.
It'd be quite interesting, I think, to compare FC with FC:Instincts on the Xbox, which is very much the same only completely different...

Can two Ipod users download the same music from the same Itunes account?

Alternatively, if I have an Itunes account set for one Ipod and I upgrade it or buy a new Ipod, can I keep my old Itunes account?

Feeling a little dumb right now....

I'm sure this must be an extremely stupid question, so it's perfect for this thread. I'm not much of a game player and my experience is only on a pc, but playing Wolfenstein on my pc is giving me RSI I think. I know that joysticks and various plug in devices exist, so I want to know if I can buy a general playstation type controller to plug into my pc that will work on any game? Or are most pc games meant to be keyboard only?

And if they do exist, can anyone recommend one?

Stoatie/Legba Rex (and any other interested parties), I don't know if you're still stuck on that bit, but what I did was: once you've cleared the ship and the cliffs overlooking it, but before you've set the bomb, swim back to the camp, and take one of the jeeps from near the radio tower. Drive that round and send it over the cliff nearest the ship so it lands on the beach- you might need to pop down yourself and nudge it into exactly the right position.

Okay. Now, when you've done that, swim back to the ship, set the explosive but don't run to the front of the ship. Instead, jump overboard from where you set the explosive and speed like a bastard to that beach. You might lose up to half your armour in the blast but it wont kill you so long as you're quick enough when you jump off the stern (bow? meh).

After the explosion, Crow comes in his chopper. By this time you'll be strapped into the jeep, and then set yourself in the jeep's gun turret with the left shift key. Train the jeep's machine gun on the helicopter, and start firing exactly when he does, because you have limited ammunition.

He thought he was hard. How the mighty fall.

I seriously recommend you do this, as the bulk of the game is still to come.

Can anyone recommend any turn-based, squad-level strategy games for the PC? I'm looking for X-com style games basically (but not X-com or its sequels as I've played them), any ideas?
In fact on a related note, do turn based strategy games still exist, or am I hopelessly stuck in the mid 90s?

Wow. Right, that's it. I'm digging out Far Cry and giving the bugger another go. (Let's face it... I was probably gonna do that anyway soon, wasn't I?)

Well done, Legba! (I even looked in a walkthrough for that bit. All it said was "kill Crow").

On consoles, yeah - Advance Wars, the Nippon Ichi stuff, Fire Emblem and a whole bunch of Japanese games that tend not to see English-language releases.

I'm not really up to date on PC games, though. Last PC TBS I played was Fallout Tactics, which is fun but fiddly.

Hey now, I beat the whole thing, it couldn't have been that bad. A few missions like the "chase the helicopter down the San Francisco freeway and shoot it down" and the "kill all the couriers with a radio-controlled aircraft as maddening to control as the cars in the original NES RC Racers game" did take some doing, but nothing I'd describe as utterly impossible. But maybe my body was just compensating for the broken collarbone I was laid up with at the time by giving me thumbs like cobras, thus ensuring my survival against the forces that would destroy me...

Phantastic Mr Phox: you might like Jagged Alliance and Jagged Alliance 2, which are modern-day-merceneary based isometric combat games. They're very, very X-COM (in combat scenes alone).

If you really like turn-based strategy, then the GBA is the platform for you, really; there's lots of lovely TBS games - Advance Wars 1 & 2, Fire Emblem 1 & 2, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Rebelstar Tactical Command (the new game from the Gollop Brothers, who wrote X-Com) - to be had for nice prices on that system - and those are only the top-notch ones I can think of; there are several lesser games, too. Also, unlike some of the PS2 TBSs that E. Randy linked to, these ones are pretty easy to find even in the UK. Plus, it's a multi-region system.

Just a little pimping, there...

Paleface: Thanks for the recommendations wrt the GBA, but unfortunately with the season and what have you I'm fairly skint and unable to afford the extravagance of a new system. I might try Jagged Alliance out though.
E. Randius: Though I have a PS2, it's single region only, and I don't have the 733t sk1llz to work out how to change that.

You don't need to, not for the best of the Nippon Ichi games - Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics and Phantom Brave have all had UK releases. The best of those, Disgaea is sold out on most websites, but should be easy to find in high street shops. Failing that, there's a bunch of copies on eBay.co.uk. I know I keep going on about it, but I can't recommend it enough, especially if you're specifically after a TBS. The other two are great, but Disgaea provides the best introduction to the changes the company makes to the regular TBS template. And it's cheap - probably about £15, if you can find a copy.

There are a couple of nice TBS games on the UK PS1, too, which you might be able to get by digging around your local indie stores (or, again, eBay). Vandal Hearts is the pick of the bunch.

I'm nuts for gangster movies, and I noticed the other day there's an XBox game based on the Godfather. I am kinda tempted to get one, even though I normally never play video games, so I was wondering, if anyone's played it, a) is it any good? and b) (and I would like to remind everyone that this is the stupid games questions thread) what the fuck would you do in it? The only games I've ever played are like Frogger and Streetfighter and shit, I don't get how you could make a game out of Godfather that was at all true to the vibe of the movie.

Jake, Colossus of Clout

I haven't played it, but as a longtime gamer I've learned to live by this credo: Movie games are always shit. Except Star Wars.
