This might be bull, but apparently it was just some asian guy in a puffer jacked who jumped the barriers.

that's some serious zero tolerance shit.

From the BBC site:

"One of them was carrying a black handgun - it looked like an automatic - they pushed him to the floor, bundled on top of him and unloaded five shots into him."

Eye-witness Mark Whitby, who has been playing too much Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

GL - that struck me too. Three coppers landed on him and then loaded three shots in to him. wtf?

Maybe they'd all watched Leon the night before? I read somewhere that if they suspect that you have a bomb the shoot to kill.

Agree that it's really not the time to be jumping barriers especially if cops are all over the station.

Five shots.

The guy's dead, by all accounts - you'd hope there would be a very good reason for unloading five shots into a man who was already on the ground under several police officers. Wary of saying too much until I know more though.

people told st stay indoors in the area around the east london mosque - apparently there are two suspect packages there... probably a false alarm, but...

BBCnews24 is covering reports from the east london mosque...

It is apparently a false alarm - they are just saying....

Expanded eyewitness account, sounds a little less GTA:

Mark Whitby said: "I was sitting on the train... I heard a load of noise, people saying, 'Get out, get down'.

"I saw an Asian guy. He ran on to the train, he was hotly pursued by three plain clothes officers, one of them was wielding a black handgun.

"He half tripped... they pushed him to the floor and basically unloaded five shots into him," he told BBC News 24.

"As [the suspect] got onto the train I looked at his face, he looked sort of left and right, but he basically looked like a cornered rabbit, a cornered fox.

"He looked absolutely petrified and then he sort of tripped, but they were hotly pursuing him, [they] couldn't have been any more than two or three feet behind him at this time and he half tripped and was half pushed to the floor and the policeman nearest to me had the black automatic pistol in his left hand.

"He held it down to the guy and unloaded five shots into him.

"He had a baseball cap on and quite a sort of thickish coat - it was a coat you'd wear in winter, sort of like a padded jacket.

"He might have had something concealed under there, I don't know. But it looked sort of out of place with the sort of weather we've been having, the sort of hot humid weather.

"He was largely built, he was quite a chubby sort of guy.

"I didn't see any guns or anything like that - I didn't see him carrying anything. I didn't even see a bag to be quite honest.

"I got into the ticket hall. I was approached by a policeman and London Underground staff asking me if I needed counselling.

"I was just basically saying I've just seen a man shot dead. I've seen a man shot dead. I was distraught, totally distraught. It was no less than five yards away from where I was sitting. I actually saw it with my own eyes."

Yeah, I think it's worth keeping separate events in separate threads.

Guess that's gonna be another walk home, then...

Our Lady Has Left the Building

Nor is it July 21st, yet we continued that in the same thread, it's a thread for London terrorist attacks, this would seem to be related terrorist activity...

Ganesh
09:56 / 22.07.05
At present, the shooting appears to be linked to a suspected terror attack, at best. This probably ought to be in the Switchboard, though.

Not Here Still
10:06 / 22.07.05
I'm wary of tying this to terrorism as yet - see my post above. I agree with 'nesh on this - separate thread, though perhaps a move to switchboard is appropriate.

you're wary?

of what? they weren't shooting him for not paying his £2:80 Z1 ticket.

They must have got information on the 4 failures yesterday and were tracking them down.

What do you think it was?

Ganesh
10:15 / 22.07.05
Could've been mistaken identity. The fact that the police shoot someone does not automatically mean that person was a terrorist, or otherwise deserving of being shot. Let's wait for more info, hmm?

Must have? Could just be some poor sod who shat himself at being followed by a bunch of guys out of uniform with concealed guns and ran. Probably not, but it could have been. I'd be wary of throwing "must haves" around in situation such as this. I don't like the idea that they got hold of him and then killed him, either. I know this is a serious situation, but it smacks of extrajudicial execution. Anyway, as others have said, I'm witholding judgement until we know more.

I don't know what it was.

But I know that making assumptions - such as 'it's just a series of power surges' - while an event is ongoing can be distracting.

I'm not saying this isn't terror-related, I'm not saying it is. I'm saying I don't know and that I'm wary of making assumptions.

Guardian: So far, there has been no official linking of today's shooting to the investigation into the terror attacks of yesterday or July 7.

Not trying to be provocative - just want to keep a clear head on this.

And yes, while It certainly amused me that a response to yesterday's attacks was - 'more bombs, so what else is new' I think it is as yet way too early to say that the two events were too closely linked...

This thread is about what is going on today.

Fair enough guys, thanks for the clarification. I agree the Must Have is a little hasty.

The balance of probability does suggest that it is connected to the recent bombings and that's why I queried you being wary of lumping them together.

Wasn't being flippant - just curious.

he was wearing a bomb belt and they shot him, presumably in the torso, five odd times? is that not a bit daft? 'well the detonators didn't work but a few rounds of hot leaden death might do the trick.'

Hattie's Kitchen

Could've shot him in the head for that reason, I guess...

Ms.T - I just heard that intensely annoying soundbite too. Actually I've got really irritated with bombastic reporting over the last 24 hours. Not sure what news we were watching last night, but they basically had at least ten minutes on 'and we don't know when the next bomb is going to be'. Hmm, newsworthy? or truism?

i think I heard a witness being interviewed that said he was shot in the head... either sky, ITV or BBC news 24- not sure which cos they keep flipping the channels in the office. But would explian why the witnesses were pretty sure he was dead so quickly rather than injured....
