I'm taking a break from packing up everything in my house into boxes for moving to a new one tomorrow. Only two boxes left and too much to pack still! But the process is being ably assisted by the magnum of Cava we got for a tenner on the way back from picking up the keys to the new place. Making me feel much better but not helping me finish the job in hand!

Instead of tottering home from Duckie in five minutes in the wee small hours of Sunday morning, we'll be tottering home from Duckie etc but it'll take seven minutes and we'll be heading in the opposite direction. Still just south of the river but now we'll have a choice of the Victoria line or the Northern line. Ideal for Soho pub crawls.

What's "The Inevitable?"

Sounds like an M. Night Shamalamalam movie...

Xoc, may I offer some advice? If you're hiring some help and a van tomorrow, clear all the routes, don't follow them around watching them, and make them a cup of tea (so don't pack the kettle!). You might offer them a nice sandwich (if you can be bothered), but most of all treat them as though they are more than just extra arms for carrying. I'm sure you'd probably do all these things naturally, but I thought I'd share the wealth of my removals experience.

Oh and beware of workers wearing caps.....

Sushi sushi sushi! Yes, I am very excited - my supervisor is taking me out for what is (apparantly) the best sushi in all of Los Angeles. I am prepared to eat my body weight in raw fish and seaweed. Yum.

paranoidwriter - caps? what? why? etc.

I wear a cap when I do removals work. I just thought I'd try and freak Xoc out if the job I have tomorrow morning happens by coincidence to be for ze. That's why I suggested a sandwich as well. I love it when clients feed me as we generally don't get much of a chance to nip out for lunch, etc. It gives me strength, like Popeye. Oh, "Billy-bonuses" are a nice surprise as well, especially if you've managed to overload boxes full of heavy books and happen to be moving to the tenth floor and the lift's broken.... Oh and a lesson to you all: if you fancy buying a new piece of furniture, for the love of door frames, measure the bastard first! It's not our fault if it doesn't fit or gets damaged because YOU were convinced we could get it though the window. (ahem) Not that I'm bitter or anything...

I tried sushi for the first time last year. I liked it so much that I ate it for lunch every day for a week. Now I get physically ill whenever I so much as think of eating sushi.

The same thing happened to me with corn dogs.

Only chap I've seen from the company so far is Adewale who delivered the packing boxes today. Somewhat disturbingly, he wore a suit and lots of bling, and no cap. I did think to myself, Can't see him moving heaqvy boxes tomorrow in that Paul Smith. I expect he's the brains and that the brawn will appear in muscle vests and caps at 10 tomorrow.

I find the whole thing horribly embarrassing somehow. I stand about trying to be useful as they ask questions like Why do you have all these books? Haven't you read them yet? and generally make me feel like I am the weirdest person whose house contents they have had the pleasure of humphing up and down lots of stairs.

Our kettle is fucked, pw, so it will still be here. If they don't pack all the cups (and don't want milk cos I never have any), I'll try to remember to offer tea. Never have before but I can see how it would be a good tactic. I find it very embarrassing somehow, just standing there, as these people do manual labour at my behest. I'm sure they could give a fuck as long as I pay them their fee.

Ahh... you chose "those cowboys", eh? Should have gone to Dave: I've never seen anyone reverse park or pack more safely into a van than him. He's also a really honourable chap and often freakishly strong.

Seriously though, I've never heard of Adewale (there are loads of "Men With Vans" after all) and I'm sure it will be fine (but we - are - the - best). By the way, are they doing your packing for you? That seems odd, if they are. I mean, do they know this? We generally like everything (except tall lamps, furniture, kids push-bikes, sofas, etc) to be boxed or bagged up and ready for us to grab and carry. Otherwise we end up spending twice as long on the job and feel slightly guilty when after six hours instead of three, the client turns round and says: "HOW MUCH?!" Also, we don't know what should go with what in whatever box or bag and don't want to be blamed if you can't find that particular precious and valuable little ornament (not that that's happened to me, but when I've had to pack I've always felt uneasy about the possibility of being wrongly accused of theft).

Also, if by chance they happen to be a moody crew, don't sweat it. As long as you're polite, ply them with drinks, stay out of their path and don't panic them, they should have no reason to be "off" with you. Other than that, like you typed, remember YOU are the one paying them so YOU'RE the boss. Just don't go crazy with your "polished finger" and you'll be fine... I've made you feel more nervous now, haven't I? Sorry!

You are not sorry, you are the imp of the perverse. I see your plan to discomfort me!

No, I feel OK. After all the madness yesterday, I feel blessed that there's this to occupy me and ground me. Wish it was over tho.

Just for once, I would like the removals men to be big, handsome bears! They so should be and they never are.
