From the website:

Antony first presented his songs after-hours at the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge in NYC. After receiving a N.Y.F.A. fellowship for "performance art/emergent forms," Antony assembled the Johnsons and recorded his first album...

I hope this lad and his Johnsons are popular here, I mean, come on, what's not to like? The looks, the cabaret, the voice? What do you all think?

Torrented the album, thought it was shit. The lad's got an okay voice (though often sounds a bit like Vic Reeve's generic lounge singer voice from Shooting Stars) but the lyrics were all a bit too 'look, I'm interesting, all my song titles are double intendres about being transsexual!' and the music behind them was bland to the point of unlistenable. Only the single and first track on the album was any good, as the band realised they were allowed to make an impact too.

He needs lyrics and tunes, or to find a big boat where he can spend his time doing cabaret singing.

I have to disagree with you, or at least just describing the voice as "okay"! Personally, it sounded like nothing else I'd ever heard. Am I wrong? Is there a tradition of people sounding like that? He just seems to be both deep and high at the same time.

Well, whilst I'm not Antony's hugest fan, I think his voice is very unusual, although there's a bit of Brian Ferry in there, I reckon.

Just bought the "new" album yesterday. I have to say - not that impressed. The first track is just voice and piano, and it's very beautiful, but the reliance on guest stars seems to take away from the work. Regardless, this is a talent that I will look out for.

Agreed, I find his "I'm gay, me" shtick incredibly tiring, and his over-use of vibrato is dull and actually a sign of technical incompetence.

His vocals are nothing on either Buckley in my book.

I find his "I'm gay, me" shtick incredibly tiring

Which "shtick" would that be then? In the music, or the interviews, or what? I think you need to unpack that statement.

Well, as Our lady of Firecrackers asserted,

the lyrics were all a bit too 'look, I'm interesting, all my song titles are double intendres about being transsexual!'

Personally, I find his work a little contrived, and in some ways a triumph of image (said double intendres) over final product.

Please don't try and argue me into a homphobic corner.
I have no problems with Lil' (or not so lil') Anthony expressing his sexuality through his music, but it does seem to be the only string to his bow.

I would go for the "doesn't know the difference between 'gay' and transsexual" corner before the "homophobic" one.

Which would be the corner for people who think his body shape is some sort of indicator of musical worth also.

Unearthly voice and it's haunting, hanging around in your head for ages after listening sometimes, but I think a little of it goes a long way. Alarmingly reminiscent of Enya but there are glorious moments as well as indulgence on the warbling and wittering front. He's better, I think, duetting with Rufus Wainwright on The Old Whore's Diet, for instance. Tighter and his voice is better showcased.

I like his use of vibratto. But his "shtick" - yeah I agree a little. It's a little... um... over the top.

Agreed - it would be much better, wouldn't it, if he dressed like a member of The Strokes? Common sense.

How do you guys know what he dresses like? I only saw that black and white CD cover and couldn´t see much of the singer.

Some pictures.

And Matt, forgive me if I'm missing something, but I really don't see how it's bad for a musician to be over the top. What do you make of Bowie? Or Elvis? Or Nancy Sinatra? I mean, it's all about being over the top from where I'm standing. What would you change about Anthony? What would you keep the same?

He looks like he´s imitating Klaus Nomi in the last picture.

But his "shtick" - yeah I agree a little. It's a little... um... over the top.

Popular music hasn't been the same since Jim Reeves died, huh?

What's with all this "shtick" crap? He's somewhere on the transsexual spectrum. That's how he is. That's what he sings about. That explains how he dresses.

If you have a problem with transsexualism, transvestism or men singing about either or both, just say so honestly. I'd like to hear him sing the odd song about ice hockey or being a truck driver, just for spicy variety, but since I can't make out a word he sings anyway, for all I know he already does.

I think Antony's thing can be misinterpreted as schtick if the listener goes into it expecting Buckley or Thom Yorke- i.e. a friend with a shoulder to cry on when the girls are causing you trouble, the sort of legitimised straight male angst so popular with NME- when what you're actually getting is Blue Velvet and then some.

Christ, I wish [insert artist's name here] would cut out the straight schtick. Boooring.

Look, stop being mean, you know what Mick and matt are trying to say, they don't have a problem with Anthony being a gay tranny, they just wish he wouldn't rub it in their faces! Do straight artists do that? No they don't, they act normal, it's common sense. And David Bowie, he was a bit funny, but he knew that there was a line and not to cross it.

Mister Six, whom all the girls
12:32 / 14.11.05
I've yet to see one example of how he rubs his lifestyle in the listener's face (and it creepily reminds me of my ex-coworker who was VERY born again in the bad way and felt that there was a Gay agenda... to put Robbiw Williams on the moon or something, I dunno. It was more her own insanity than her religion). But whatever, it sounds like a downward spiral argument and not somewhere anyone would want to go, really.

I also don't think it's the musician's intention.

I've been listening to Antony for about five years and this is his first (to my knowledge) fully marketed release. I've not heard this one, so I'm the dark on exactly what you've heard. But his voice is haunting, his style very cabaret and influenced by (his word) Soft Cell and Alyson Moyet. I caught a bio clip of him during my honeymoon in Scotland (don't ask) and he's very sensitive and quiet.

Seems like a nice chap.

I'd recommend 'I fell in love with a dead boy' and this cartoon, which I think will brighten he mood for one reason or another.

It usually brightens my mood, anyway. But what do I know, I like Daniel Johnston.

To be honest, I don't give a shit if he's a tranny or a straight male rocker. I'd just wish that all artists, including Elvis and Bowie had a LITTLE restraint. For example, the "straightest" rocker I can think of, Paul Rodgers of Free, Bad Company and now Queen, bothers me because he plays it SO straight. It's not whether or not he's gay or straight, it's the fact that he's playing a persona so strongly. For the record, I've never enjoyed the persona aspect of Bowie, ie Ziggy or Aladdin Sane. Booooring. I find the music lovely, but I find the person exhausting.

That's not to say I don't want a little theatricality. I still need to watch something, for heaven's sake. I just don't need my nose rubbed in it.

Yup, a Travis man that's me. Obsessed, utterly. Them and Coldplay.

If only I had realised the fuss this would cause.
Please, I have nothing against outrageous performers, or gender-bending in music.

All I meant to say was that, from my point of view, Antony's sexuality was his selling point over the quality of his music. I am not saying that anyone who likes him ahs been foolishly duped by the evil execs at his label gunning after the pink pound, nor that their opinions are any less valid than mine.

Ganesh
18:31 / 14.11.05
What is his sexuality? He seems to focus more on gender, from where I'm standing.

Sorry about the misunderstanding - thanks for clearing it up. We've all been there, I suppose, fancying a singer more than we appreciate the music they make. It's often stigmatised in these times, so good on you for admitting it. As far as I can tell the majority of this artist's fans tend to favour the music more, but that doesn't make your feelings any less valid.

I kinda feel the same about [insert name of male/female artist]: all that bleating on about being in love with [women/men]. We know you're heterosexual, dear, kindly stop rubbing it in our faces.

(PS Similar-ish sentiments three years ago...)

Ganesh - I'm sensing a little hostility.

See the thing is, Ganesh is only repeating what's been said upthread but swapping the sexualities. The fact that this makes you feel threatened displays the hostile nature of the original statement about non-straight sexuality.

Ganesh
09:40 / 15.11.05
Exactly. I'm pointing out that 90whatever% of popular artists could be said to be pushing a straight "schtick", throwing their heterosexuality in our faces by dint of their music, videos and the way they present themselves to the media. If you sense that as hostility, then you perhaps have some insight into how I feel when the tiny minority of openly non-heterosexual (or, in Antony's case, trans) artists is criticised for being too overtly queer.

Mourne Kransky
10:33 / 15.11.05
Large dollops of hostility towards blinkered thinking, in fact, meatus.

The weirdest bit is that Antony hasn't a hostile note in his work! He'd be pretty weirded out at the response from a poster saying 'Check this out, you guys surely must love him, right?'

I'm just going to direct you guys to the cartoons again.

Cartoons heal all wounds.

I suppose it could be argued that what the poster above is uncomfortable with and clumsily calls Antony's "schtick", might be the whole doomed Warhol superstar/Candy Darling crossed with Berlin cabaret stuff - that Antony heavily appropriates. An image that might draw heavily on the artist's particular sexuality and gender, but is perhaps not entirely synonomous with it? As in, it's possible to really hate Warhol posturing and cod-1920s Berlin theatrics without that dislike necessarily being connected to its perceived queerness.

I tend to think of Antony's music as an evocation of a particular setting and its mythology, much like when Scott Walker does the Jacques Brel covers, or even people like Nick Cave or Tom Waits, who conjure a sense of time, place and persona that might not be the autobiographical reality of their lives. I think Antony's music paints a picture of a certain world and its inhabitants, and I think this is why the whole "all my song titles are double intendres about being transsexual!" criticism doesn't really stand up, at least not how I see it. I think it's a bit more complex than "I am a transexuaal and here are some songs about it", and Antony's persona is specifically an exploration of a mythic world of doomed transexual Berlin cabaret singers and related matters. I like it. But I can see how other people might find it a bit irritating, like how a lot of people probably find Nick Cave's old testament preacher pose a bit irritating, or countless other artists who write in a similar way.

I would say that gender might play a similar role and provide a similar inspiration in Antony's music to the role that religion plays in Nick Cave's music. To assert that his music is all about being a transexual is maybe as limited a view as stating that Nick Cave's music is all about religion. It's just not as clear cut as that. There is an element of storytelling and narrative going on.

Anyway, what's his other record like? Is it just a re-release of his first one or is there a third album? I got 'I am a bird now' ages ago before I knew anything about him and I really liked it. Went to see him play earlier in the year, which was pretty good. Haven't listened to it in awhile though, not sure whether that's because its initial appeal has worn off over time, or if it's just cos I played it loads when I first got it. Time will tell, I guess.

Legba - The fact that this makes you feel threatened displays the hostile nature of the original statement about non-straight sexuality.

You're assuming I'm threatened? Look what I said upthread and believe vehemently:
To be honest, I don't give a shit if he's a tranny or a straight male rocker
It's not whether or not he's gay or straight, it's the fact that he's playing a persona so strongly

I don't think I'm being hostile here. I think I'm just tired of singers that are mostly style with a little substance. It's all show nowadays. For me, it's not a matter of (non)sexuality or gender, it's a matter of showmanship. Antony (and plenty of others with diff't sexuality/gender) have a lot of theatricality and that bores me slightly. I'm infinitely more interested in his talent as a singer and as a songwriter.

Ganesh - I'm sensing a little hostility.
This refers to the thread in general, not his comment about bleating on about being in love.
