There's a huge article on The Wire in The New Yorker: here

Couple of spoilers in there btw.

Yes, one that I'd consider a big one in my terms in the first page already (about who's returning -- and some vague ones about what'll be etc).

But thank you immensily for that. Really cool.

(a 12 page mama fudger... Between this and this one terrific article they did on Deadwood... God bless the New Yorker, man.)

December 4 in North America, according to Amazon.com.

Not sure about the UK, though.

3/10/08, saith amazon.co.uk. It is a long time.

I have no idea why I did American dates; 10 March.

So not such a long time. I hoped you'd screwed the date up. Cheers.

9th episode, 8th today: Good Lord! Is McNulty having his kids tail Stringer?

Hmm, staying out of the threads proper until I've can be sure to avoid spoilers, I'm over halfway through Season 1 in a single day and filled with unashamed love for this TV show.

My favourite moment so far, was in I think, epiode 4(?) When McNulty and Bunk are handed the old murder case that has D'Angelo as Prime Suspect. It totally shocked me I'd grown so attached to D'Angelo I just couldn't belive he'd done it, no way could it be true! Then, later in the episode there's that incredibly choreographed scene of "Fucks" and "Fuck Me"s in which McBunk inspect the murder scene and you realise it all happened a
exactly how D'Angelo described it earlier.

Although, his confused response in a later episode when Wallace mentions "That Girl" has me wondering if he wasn't just taking the rap for a friend, or taking the rep for himself.

Oh The Wire, I am a puppet on your exposition free, morally ambiguous strings.

Well, it's back. Season 5 officially premieres on Sunday, but thanks to the magic of VOD, the first episode is available on cable now. Is anybody watching this as it's initially released, or are all of you on DVD? Obviously this thread isn't the place to talk about it, but I'm not sure if a new thread's needed just yet.

That new day in Baltimore, though? Yeah. What did you think was going to happen? This last lap won't be easy.

Also, for anybody who hasn't seen them already, some prequel clips were released with the season 4 dvds and are viewable here. Seeing little Omar should make me cry, but there's something too awesome about it.

Bring on the new thread! I saw the season 5 premiere a couple of days ago, and loved it. There's an in depth review on my blog, but I'd love to get some dialogue going. There's much to talk about. Here's my spoiler free recap of the high points: Herc! Michael! Every single other character on this brilliant show!

Well, while many might have seen the first few episodes of the 5th and final season of the wire due to the wonders of the interwebnet, perhaps such revelations should be in their own season 5 thread. Better still, you could wait two days for the the first episode to be broadcast (in the US at least), then start a spoiler-free thread for it.

Hm. I'm sorry. I didn't make myself clear. By "the magic of VOD", I'm referring to HBO's own video-on-demand service. In the US, all (afaik) HBO subscribers can view new episodes of The Wire the week before they are scheduled to air (starting Monday morning). This is also how season 4 was released.

Is it being aired differently elsewhere? Is there anywhere, in particular, where the episodes are being aired according to a firm Sunday night schedule? Is there a day on which, as far as Barbelith is concerned, a new episode can be fairly subjected to wanton and depraved spoilage? I doubt there's a huge crowd of people watching it week-by-week, but I'd still like to keep things as accessible as possible.

I was just going by first broadcast date as detailed in the press/listing mags. The VOD service does throw up fresh questions as to when something can be considered 'broadcast'. It might be best to err on the side of caution and go with the date in the listings, or perhaps this truly is irrelevant in these on demand days.

Either way, it strikes me that Season 5 discussion would be best served in a season 5 thread. That way those who care about spoilers and are presumably going to wait (either for broadcast in other territories or for the a looooong time it will take for the boxed set) won't walk into anything they'd rather not see in a general thread about their favourite show...
