but.. couldn't they just use a bloody syntheziser or a regular size (pipe) organ?

Oh, I weep... Seriously, though, why use a synthesizer when you can use the enormous organ? Synths are great when you don't have an organ, or a string section or whatever*, but if you do have the resources, I can't think why one wouldn't use them, even if only for the experience you have in making the recording.

As for being "overwhelming," the first time I heard the organ on Intervention - played loud, in the car - I actually cried. How much the actual size of the organ factored into my response I can't begin to guess, but it sounded and felt enormous and majestic.

*and they can make all sorts of great sounds that don't have a "real world" analogue, of course

I can understand where Mos Nolte is coming from because I genuinely can't remember almost any of the Arcade Fire songs, I could pick them out of a musical line up if I heard them but ask me to hum it... no chance. But though they don't stay with me for long, they leave me feeling emotionally happy.

Cardiff International Arena (30)
Nottingham Arena (31)

I think what's usually working with the orchestral indie bands(ie-wall of sounds and tiny frightened lead vocals) works even better with Arcade Fire:
The first time i heard Neighbourhood#1 it felt as if the singer was going to collapse before the end of the song and, what's best, not because it sounded dull or creepy, but simply because the guy's giving all he's got, clenched fist and all, without the chest beating theatrics.
In other words, i guess they're just a really GENEROUS band.

Did anyone else make it to the recent Arcade Fire gigs at Alexandra Palace over the weekend? Despite the chore of making it to Wood Green, queuing coatless in the wind and rain for a coach and having to buy tokens to exchange for pints, it was still undoubtedly the best gig I've seen this year.

If anyone else here did manage to go, can you identify the televangelist whose rant was projected during the show?

I managed to swap my tickets and went last night- i agree it was fantastic- despite the shit venue (although living in Finsbury Park it was much more handy) it was great. Not sure who the swearing TV evangelist was?

The atmosphere at Ally Pally sadly didn't match the Brixton vibe- I had nattering pissed kids standing in front of me making phone calls throughout the set- which became quite annoying. However we got a longer set and more old songs than at Brixton (Laika, Tunnels, Haiti, Power Out, Rebellion and Wake up from Funeral and Headlights look like diamonds from the EP as well as a cover that i didn't know and a fair chunk of Neon bible)

All in all pretty cool- i just got offered a ticket for tonight and i must say i'm sorely tempted... (for those that may want to check em out the venue seemed to leave the touts quite litterally in the cold and they were selling for pretty much face value..)
