Eris and Discordism

I have only just been able to catch on my reading and so at the moment I am reading a PDF of Phil Hine's Oven Ready Chaos. This is about chaos magic and some information on discordism (I'm only half way through so that could be some more stuff yet). After a brief mention of Eris as the possible inventor of tripulate forms, I started thinking especially as I have been sorting stuff out for the VAT return at work. Now the VAT and Inland Revenue seem to use an age old paper system which is now shoe horned in a computer system. The main upshot is you have to definately give them the form they are after. Regardless of the fact that the information could be on another form but that form isn't form 234a it's 234b so it's not accepted. The more I was sitting there and struggling with both Sage Accounts and tax/VAT side of things I had a brilliant flash of inspiration.............................................

Eris is the goddess of the Inland Revenue and VAT. And as such all the staff who work for them are in fact priest/esses of her, helping to maintain the general level of chaos and confusion in the world.

After this thought I spent a good ten minutes chuckling and then the accounts seemed to go alot faster and easier not to mention all I could mentally hear was Donkey from Shrek singing "I'm a believer" which could be seen as insanity I know. However I'm now interested in this goddess and whilst reading up on her and discordism as she linked heavily with them, I was wondering has everyone got any information on her or any experiences?

Well, she can be very fickle and vain, among other things. When I was setting up my shrine awhile ago I forgot to include some sort of representation of her in it. Shortly after that my ordinary routine was briefly tossed into a state of bizarre chaos: What happened was my car broken down and had to be repaired at a shop. So when I went to work the next day I borrowed my brother's car. I was driving more carefully then usual because I wasn't used to the way it handled. Yet still I got into an accident: It was at a light, I had green and was driving through when this car seems to appear out of nowhere. I hit the brakes but I still crashed. The driver of the car (and her friend, who was conveniently at the scene) were convinced I had gone through a red light, and for some reason I agreed with them at the time... But later on thinking back I realized "You've never cut through a green light in your life. You weren't driving lazily or daydreaming either... It was your brother's car and you were being extra alert." Just a strange situation. Fortunetly, no one got hurt too badly, and my brother's got a new, better car now, so I guess it worked out, in the end. If anything, it's helped me appreciate life more.

Of course you could just as easily say it was a freak accident and Eris had nothing to do with it. I choose to look at the situation from two different viewpoints, however.

Well if you are the same as me with unsimilar stuff then I can see you would have been very careful with your brother's car but in the end things worked out well, your brother got a new car and you were unhurt.

From alot of the texts I have been reading about her she does seem quick to annoy. In my opinion definately someone to approach carefully, but then until I try to gain a working relationship I don't think I can comment further. But thank you for your experience and if you don't mind me asking; Do you work with her often?

I have never heard of Eris, but she sounds awful, like a kind of Eric? Is she thickly bespectacled like that troll on Teachers?

As a budding thelemite my enemy is the demon Choronzon, he of the mad, shaking hair. He of the gristle and the grime. Accursed be his name to the Aeons, yay!

For he encourages all entropy, he is powerful enough to fling men and women to easy death. He is invoked simply, by non action.

Probably is one of the most fun links about both Eris and Discordism.

However as far as I know a greek goddess and as such her 'life' is confusing to say the least. She was the twin of Ares and the daughter of Zeus and Hera; or She was the daughter of Nyx. The romans called her Discordia.

Has what I have found to be the usual stuff said about her.

There's a thread on Eris here which covers some of the contents and discontents of Discordianism, and also features some truly entertaining rag-losing on the part of many concerned.

This is crazy. I just finished writing (I guess thinking really) a crappy poem about Eris while I was in the shower. I won't bore you with it, mostly because it's still in crap/rough form. The main bit I think you might find helpful. She seems (atleast in my experience) to be nice to those she favors even while spreading chaos in their lives. Not all chaos is a bad thing. Think of it as playing dice with the world, but she'll load the dice if she likes you.

But dice aren't chaotic - they're random, but you can confidently expect them to perform one of a finite number of actions, with some actions - coming up seven, if you have two dice - being more probable than others. Loaded dice are less random yet, because the likelihood of a particular and predictable outcome is even greater.

Eris and dice-throwing:

there's always the chance one die will roll under a table, the other eaten by a dog...

what is "random" anyway, in the face of chaos? Unrecognized/unrecognizeable patterns?

Good point, but I think (to me) the important part is to remember that Eris is a goddess of chaos. Therefore she's not likely to follow rules all the time, including the rules of chaos. I think the idea of cheating at dice on a cosmic level fits nicely with her. It's possible that this image won't work as well for others, but it's very powerful for me because I met her in a dream and she let me have a turn at throwing the dice. I think I'm hijacking the thread....

To go back to the original topic: I've never worked with her in conjunction with taxes (mostly because I don't do that sort of thing), but I have had a moment similar to what you (archraven) described. It was while the previous Eris thread was going and I had been wondering alot about what some of the people (mostly Haus) had been saying regarding Eris's dark past. I was thinking this over on the way to class when I doubled over from a sudden stomach cramp. When I opened my eyes, I staring straight down at a giant omega (as I was walking on the section of sidewalk where all the frats and sororities get to paint a section for their group) and a line from the Pincipia Discord flashed into my head "the Greeks were victims of indigestion." I laughed and my stomach felt better immediatly. Then I laughed until it hurt. Eris and I have been friends ever since.

Not exactly. She's a goddess of strife. Bit different. In fact, your anecdote, where potentially scary Eris is turned back into wacky, funny, happy-go-lucky Eris sums up a lot of my ambivalence about what has been done to and with Eris.

Haus, I think we're running into the same problem we did in the previous thread. My take is that the ancient Greek Eris and the Discordian Eris can be/are completly different things. If you want to keep the new interpretation of Eris away from the old, that's just fine (personally I think that is a big part of chaos magick), in fact, my story was partly about seperating my interpretation of Eris from the old Greek Eris.

This chaos stuff really strikes me as a self delusion heap of dung for people who like to swish their robes and smile mysteriously at those who haven't seen the conspiritorial wink.

Come on, can any one say what happens after you have grown up? Don't you realise how transparently middle class you all sound with your worries about tax mitigation and your lack of commitment to any work on the physical plane that is implied by dreaming up ego centric goals rather than casting yourselves into the night and maybe getting scared enough to develop a single muscular skill by repeated dedication some braveness against pain and bullshit.

or am I just a dirty working class ex tax payer who can't bring himself to join in the shit that is ordering 'spirits' to make my fucking breakfast everyday?

Just asking...

So...is middle class a bad thing now? Damn, wish someone had told my parents before I was born.

worries about tax mitigationlosing all worries about taxes, mitigated or not, along with most alot of other worries.

your lack of commitment to any work on the physical plane that is implied by dreaming up ego centric goals
First, I have no idea what you are referencing by ego-centric goals. I'd be happy to address it if you would explain it. I'm actually quite committed to the physical plane, after all, it's where I keep all my stuff. I do plenty of things here, I volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, I have an active social and romantic life, and I'm going to college to earn a degree in psychology so I can help people. Oh yeah, and I'm a discordian and a chaos magickian too. These things should all flow together into one thing, not wrestle for time in my life.

Anyway, sorry if I seem kinda harsh jorjun, just trying to help you see things from another view.

There's been some weird people around here lately. Then again, most of us are pretty uncommon as it is anyway, so no big deal.

Certainly Eris has been fluffified by various New Agers and whatnot. Kinda like Bast, who of course as a "viscious streak a mile wide" and isn't just about cuddling cats. But most Gods & Goddesses have various aspects and dispositions anyway so it's all good, and chaos doesn't necessarily imply a negative experience. I kind of like the idea that some of my gods have their bad sides... It means if something nasty turns up I'll have some entities on my side who won't be afraid to get their hands dirty.

Thanks Haus for that link to an older thread. I tried searching but I didn't find anything on Discordia, probably my awful spelling was the problem.

Anyway alot of what was said on the older thread matches what I have seen of Discordists, although no one mentioned how miserable they normally look. That's my own opinion based on the people I have met, there may be some who are very cheerful people but not met them yet.

Thanks again and I'm going to carry on looking and reading. At least I have found a version of Principia Discordia now.

I tend to invoke Eris whenever I'm doing housework, because she's female, and therefore has dominion over menial chores.

Not too comfortable about invoking her during the cooking, though. I mean, all the best TV chefs are dudes.

I guess it would depend on the type of cooking. If I were doing brownies, I'd go for Eris - baking is inherently female. If I were doing some cool Thai/Italian fusion thing, I might go for Osiris.

It's that bloke thing.

You know... I remember an incedent cooking pasta.
Not this past easter, but the one before that- all I was doing was boiling water to soften and cook hard noodles in their hard uncooked crunchy state that happens when you don't get nice real fresh pasta.
Anyway, it's a very simple recipe. Boil water. Insert only ingredient. wait. strain.

And I managed to set my kitchen on fire.

You know... being easter and all I still blame Christ, but... the more I think about it, I bet Eris told him to do it.

So am I not womanly enough now to cook?
Should I never bake again?

I think so.

Maybe if I get some breast implants or something.

Thanks Seth. You've really changed my life.

Well I have learned a few things from the middling strumpet above.

Don't invoke Eris. She is already there, if you don't notice it quick enough then you might have your kitchen accidentally burn down.

[possible thread rot although it's going already ]
For me this is like a discussion in another site's forum, Would Loki and Eris get on? Someone suggested like a house on fire. The reply from one of the chaotes was;
No, Eris would forget to turn the gas off and Loki would be the one with the zippo.
[end of thread rot]

I haven't had any experience or heard of definate destruction by her at all. Not her style I think, so far in my reading/research on her, she teaches by fire in my opinion. I.e. shoves you in at the deep end and lets you learn by doing and experiencing. And like most people she probably doesn't like being ignored but then who does?
This could be wrong but those are my intial feelings on Eris.
