No offense taken!
The link was interesting. The boxes made for sale on that site remind me of open/closable triptychs, they're more like little cupboards.
Its interesting that they are described as being to keep the sacred objects out of sight/touch of non-priestly type people. When constructing my box alter I was concerned to make sure it wasn't as though I was placing them out of sight... if that makes sense? One of my main worries was that it would become a box for 'putting away' and have an 'out of sight, out of mind' effect. So far it actually draws more attention than any other kind of alter as the box buzzes and draws my attention, and the objects aren't collecting dust looking pretty, they are taken out and put back so I actually engage with them. I always intend to do that with other types of alters, but it hasn't happened yet. The act of taking the objects out of the box, laying them out, and then putting them back gives a sense of ritual and reverence to the whole situation, and its a ritual I feel works.
Currently this has become a once a week thing, wherein I make a pot of tea, lay everything out, light candles and offer tea and biscuits. Then I talk to them and try to listen.
I figure I wouldn't normally invite relatives (or friends) round without offering them tea, so this should be no exception... and I got the impression it would be the kind of ritual to be appreciated. |
