I've joined the apps group and am happy to help out! (but need to know what to do -do we fwd the emails of people with not free email addresses to Tom?)

Olulabelle

No.

You check them out, look at their online presence, decide whether you think they should join and then put your answer in the database. Then Fridge (I guess) will compile a list of all the accepted people and forward the list to Tom on a regular basis. We really don't want to start deluging Tom with single random emails saying can you add this or that person.

Sorry, I've only just read the emails that were sent this morning -should probably have posted that here. Sounds fine anyway, cheers...

It is true that it's not practical for me to personally invite every individual person onto Barbelith and that I would prefer them to be batched up in some way - but I'm certainly up for doing this once a week, maybe twice. At the moment we're doing it in larger batches over longer periods and that's not really ideal.

Tom, can I just ask what our firm objectives are when looking at new members? For instance if someone has a free email address and a web presence of one month and they seem okay via email is that enough?

Quick question if I'm recommending someone but they have a gmail address will they still be considered?

Otherwise I should e-mail barbelithmembers@ioddia.com and then follow up with a PM to Olulabelle, right?

I've stopped checking people until we get an answer to Nina's question. There's no sense of me going through that if I'm using faulty criteria.

Olulabelle
21:38 / 27.07.05
Gridley, you don't need to stop checking - just do the ones with obvious answers.

Have we decided who can second check? Can I second check?

Haus, are you joining the applications board? We are missing and needing you. Currently only Anna and Fridge are second checking.

Anybody can either first or second check. There's no real difference between the checks - I always thought that the idea was that two people would independently verify that a person existed.

oh, and yeah, can anyone even remotely interested in doing this join the group - it's easy really, and the more people we have, the less work per person and the faster the speed overall

Tryphena Absent

Okay, I'm going to go through tonight and do all of the easy ones and then think about the criteria for the more difficult ones with my lizard brain.

invisible_al, pm us the person's email address to let us know who it is, then get them to send an email to the barbelithmembers address.

Heya guys - I haven't had a list in a while - are there any people who you know are just okay from the get-go that you could chuck to me for me to add them to the board?

I've got a friend who's been waiting on the vetting process to be done with him. He's a fantastic guy and the artist that's been working on my comic with me for years.

Any update on his status?

He's halfway through the process, actually I'm trying to find his email at the moment so I can complete it but I'm having some trouble locating it.

i've sent an email to ioddia and PMed lula about a friend of mine who wants in.

(Actually I'm really glad that you just named him because I've checked ten people today against their emails and it was really bothering me because he was the only person waiting for a secondary check who I hadn't done.)

Tryphena Absent

If anyone has a friend who wants to apply then get them to mention you in their application email as well. Two people check everyone and 'lula doesn't necessarily email everyone who applies anymore so including your name means we can pm you if we need to and any of us can check the applicant out that way.

Someone asked about my critera - basically it's pretty simple - we just want people who we know aren't trolls. So that means that anyone who sends an e-mail with their real name from their work or school e-mail addresses (or has their own domain name-based e-mail address around a weblog) who isn't one of our well known trolls is completely welcome. If they don't have one of those, then anyone who has (say) a BIT of a history online which you can look up and see isn't dodgy is also fine. Really it's just to stop two things: (1) people signing up randomly on a whim from google and (2) old trolls trying to get back in by using crappy e-mail addresses.

Okay, so the guy I proposed still hasn't heard back, nearly two months on from me sending the initial email. Should I just start the process over again?

Tryphena Absent

pm me his name and I'll check the database now.

We could still do with some more people to initially check all of the applicants on the Yahoo group. If you have time and could send a couple of emails a week then that would be good.

Olulabelle, I think we should change the inital email address to a gmail account so we can all get into it and forward the applications. It's stupid that only you can do it, if we had more people doing the checks it would slow us down.

Fridge, is there any way that we can archive old messages in the Yahoo group?

Char Aina

i'm willing to help, if that's any use.
i can supply a gmail address too.

The best thing to do is join the yahoo group and email fridge your email address so he knows that it's you.

I've signed on and PM'ed fridge. Thanks everyone for working so hard.

You don't need to archive old messages, they stay there forever. Unless I'm misunderstanding here?

w1rebaby
18:01 / 04.08.05
Oh, and I did create a gmail account for applications - barbelith.apply at gmail dot com. I can distribute the password to the group. I think I can set it to automatically forward everything to the group address... probably.

Tryphena Absent
19:08 / 04.08.05
But could we archive so we didn't have to scroll down the list through messages from people we'd already approved.

Should I change the application addresses in this thread then?

w1rebaby
19:17 / 04.08.05
You can view messages by month or whatever.

Change it by all means - I've not set up the automatic forwarding yet though.

If any of you want to know what to do just read the file on the yahoo group.

is there an age limit?
i am currently looking at the application of a youngster and smoothly just emailed to ask if hir age is an issue...
whaddya reckon?

Tryphena Absent

I suggest you pm Tom Coates. As far as I know we don't have an age limit but there is a lot of stuff on the site that a 13 year olds parent might not want them to read.
