In case there's anyone who's not in the apps group reading this -I sent off a list of people to Tom today, so progress is being made!

As I understand this stuff, if he was UNDER thirteen it would be totally illegal. I'm pretty sure that if they're over thirteen it's okay (although it could be if they're thirteen or under that it's illegal without parental consent). My personal feelings are that I should check that date, but that in the menatime you guys should figure out whether you think the person concerned is mature enough to deal with the stuff on the site and respond accordingly.

I'm all for transparency, but I'm a little bit concerned that since we're encouraging applicants to keep up to date with this thread, we should probably be careful not to talk about applicants' submissions too openly here. Partly so we don't hurt feelings, but also because we could be betraying information about a future poster that they don't want to be public.
Just a thought.

Well we definitely shouldn't name anyone, after all it's only your own right to admit your age or not on the board. I have read the applicants posts on another board and I think ze would deal well with being a member of barbelith.

Just a heads up- new applicants have been put on the database and need to be checked.

Please could anybody who wants to join the list send a PM as indicated including the address you applied with as well as sending mail to the apps list, because otherwise we have no idea that you are who you say you are. That's two on the pending list so far.

So if the main thing is to avoid trolls, personal recommendation is pretty effective? A friend of mine came to the Brighton minimeet, but doesn't go to college or school, just left work, doesn't blog or have a website etc. so her current web presence is minimal.
Is there any protocol for personal vouching-for? Should I send her name to anyone specific?

Quantum, if you just email barbelith.apply@gmail.com with the name of your friend and / or her email address, and let us know who you are on the board then we'll know who she is when she emails!

Have done, just had to get the bad Leap gag in and gripe about the slowness- my best friend was hassling me about it last night.
I'm trawling the relevant threads as I was absent when the new policy came round, but I'm not sure about the web presence thing- what about people who aren't very webby? If I applied today I wouldn't get into Barbelith- I've got a free email account and that's it.

Quantum

I've joined the Yahoo group and all that stuff, hopefully speeding things up.
I'm a little concerned that two good people I know IRL are still unable to post after 2 months or so (hello! you know who you are!) while knodge and several pseudotrolls have been merrily posting shite all over the board. I recommended Barbelith to another friend who's an ideal candidate (eloquent hiphopper comix fan) but he couldn't be bothered with the lengthy application process as he only has a hotmail account and went elsewhere instead- now fair enough, not enough investment in the board to be worthy of membership perhaps, but it seems a shame.
While I appreciate Tom's point about making Barbelith something to value, let's make it rigorous rather than arduous to join. We do need new members don't we?
Thoughts?

I think a recommendation from a current "trusted" member is good enough -- so yer friends should be on the fast track anyway.

Although I'm not sure exactly what constitutes "trusted."

Not evil or untrustworthy, probably. If in doubt ask Tom or somebody else with previous.

Basically I try to find a way to get all people that I check on the board. Occasionally they thwart me. Accepted without question are recognised institutional email addresses and a recommendation from anyone on the board who isn't a troll whether I've encountered them consistently or not. A pm conversation with the member usually clears up any doubts I might have. Next is an attempt to find some kind of connection between online persona and identity, even if that's just a blog or membership on a bulletin board of some kind, then if all else fails a long exchange with the person as this usually shows up an unwillingness to actually discuss the approach or certain issues and biases that border on the unacceptable.

So basically Quantum any friends that you want to get onto the board should have to wait around two weeks. This takes a while but that's how long it's taking to check people... this is literally the workload of a full time job for two people. I think it would take about 20 hours a week per person if we only had two people doing this and all of us are working full time. It takes at least two weeks for every person to get onto the board, usually longer.

This system is horribly unrealistic, it's time consuming, it's taking too long to get people on here who we can pass immediately. Honestly I was only functioning as a checker because I was unemployed. We need more people to do this but really we need people who don't work and frankly what we really really need is to find another way to do this that's not time consuming or exclusive because this cannot be an indefinite solution to this problem unless you can employ two people to do it.

Agh. I spent ages faffing around Policy, getting sidetracked and blah blah, looking for this, and pm'd Tom about new membership, and now here it is.

Righty-ho.

P.S. If there's another doorman needed, I'd do it.
