Should we Reopen the Board?

Completely Open: NO

Tom's Email Registration Option: YES

Nobody's girl
12:12 / 16.02.05
Yes. The board is clearly stagnating, new blood is needed.

Jack, I know you're a cheeky man, so you might be playing a cheeky game, but your "condition" ain't going to happen, mate.

12:16 / 16.02.05
No. Sledgehammer to crack a nut. There are better ways of freshening things up.

Tom Coates
12:17 / 16.02.05
Jack - given that your proposal is not an option, please vote again. Fully open with no restraint or closed to new members unless they go through off-board e-mail conversations with someone are really your options.

I hope some of these people voting yes will actually make a case in the other thread. I can’t believe so many posters are following the arguments and yet still voting yes like this. There’s a proposal on the table to let new people who ask in, and yet you’re all voting not to bother with any kind of subtle, nuanced response, and instead to sort any mess out later.

12:41 / 16.02.05
Yes, that's exactly what I'm voting for, Bed Head. There's an irritating assumption around here that the people voting yes are doing so without carefully reading all the arguments. I've read them, and i've come to a different conclusion to you. It happens.

With that in mind, can anybody else planning on replying to this thread make sure that they're aware of the reality of the situation by reading this one first? That's before voting yes *or* no, btw.

Ganesh
12:43 / 16.02.05
As the system currently stands, a somewhat torn no.

ONLY NICE THINGS
12:45 / 16.02.05
That does worry me... are people following the discussion in the other forum? Also, we have already got a problem - there are actually three options here:

1) Open board
2) People allowed onto board after email to someone/verifiable email address provided/similar process
3) Closed board

In the original question, Flowers provided a binary choice between (1) and not-(1), which is sort of (3). Tom has now said that the options are in fact (1) and (2). It's worth noting that we already havre a version of (2) in place. I'm not sure a) that people know what they are voting for, exactly, and b) that they understand the implications of the decision they're making. I'd certainly ask everyone read the last three pages at least of the "State of the Board at Present" thread before voting here.

Yes to email, ASAP.

Honestly, needing to send an email is not any bigger a deal for the new person needing to get on than filling in a webform.

If the moderators are unable to handle the flood of emails, and the quality of incoming people is consistently high, then open the floodgates fully.

Spaniel
12:51 / 16.02.05
Yes to email.

Tom Coates
12:59 / 16.02.05
Can we keep it as either YES - totally open, NO - not totally open. We can discuss whether or not there are better ways of being not totally open after this, I think. Basically the open / not open issue is one character in one file. If I change it the doors open fully. If I don't they stay as they are. So let's just get that debate out of the way first. If people aren't comfortable with the doors being completely open, then vote no to this one, and then we'll have another rapid discussion about whether the mods are prepared to do some of the vetting work. I imagine they would be.

(1) Yes, totally open.

I'll clean up as much as poss if this fucks up.

Jack Vincennes
13:08 / 16.02.05
No, for reasons stated better by other people upthread.

Ganesh
13:15 / 16.02.05
So... the 'yes to email, etc.'s are, I take it, counted as nos?

Goodness Gracious Meme
13:21 / 16.02.05
No. Wish it wasn't the case, but no. Certainly no if 'completely open'.

Perhaps some kind if Tom/we decide to stay closed for now, 'working party thread' to figure out a 'not completely open' option that might be worth experimenting with?

As I agree with people who say that some new blood is likely to be a very good thing, But I don't think a total opening up is workable, and sadly, right now not desireable.

MJ-12
13:46 / 16.02.05
As things stand, no.

13:49 / 16.02.05
I've no doubt I'd be sitting here chuckling quietly to myself for ages if it turned out that some of the new board members were, at least arguably 'a bit much.' But then it wouldn't be me who'd be staying up all night trying, out of the goodness of my heart, to get things back on track in the worst case scenario, so, reluctantly;

No.

FinderWolf
13:54 / 16.02.05
Yes.

although I don't want Tom or everyone to have volunteer tons of hours to make it work... maybe yes to the email registration option?

The Natural Way
14:05 / 16.02.05
Again with the tentative yesing.

14:12 / 16.02.05
A reluctant no.

14:19 / 16.02.05
I say "yes" if i) it's for a limited period, just to see how it goes, and ii) all the unused suits that register get junked after a month or two.

charrellz
14:21 / 16.02.05
No.

Atleast not until a better system is in place, and as long as long as there is a way to get friends in.

doglikesparky
14:30 / 16.02.05
Yes

Olulabelle
14:41 / 16.02.05
No.

I think we should sort out how we're going to amend functionality and things like that first before we start opening the board up to things we appear not to be able to deal with.

I'm busy, but I don't mind checking email addresses and in fact I would very much like to put more into this community. If I was any good at coding I'd offer to do that as well but I'm not. Other people are though and they've already said they would be up for doing the things Tom and Cal don't have time to do.

A fall of geckos

No to a completely open board as things currently stand.

The email option makes a lot of sense at the moment though.

Psi-L is working in hell
15:23 / 16.02.05
No to the completely open board.

If what is wanted is the influx of people who are going to contribute to the site in the right spirit, then beefing up the email membership option sounds like it will address this issue better at this time.

When I started this thread the options were just reopen the board or not. I don't know who the trouble maker is who's trying to turn this into a three option race

If people think it necessary I'll do a fresh thread so that people can vote on all the options, but can we be clear on what they are?

1) Tom reopens the board, no restrictions.
2) Moderators check the email addresses first.
3) The board isn't reopened.

Is this right? Are there any other options?

Jack - given that your proposal is not an option, please vote again. Fully open with no restraint or closed to new members unless they go through off-board e-mail conversations with someone are really your options.
Then I vote go through email route. Would we be able to email recomendations for the person though? Even if not, I guess email for now. Maybe we should do this vote once a quarter though.

Yes

To add more detail, which wasn't asked for but I'm going to do anyhow.

Yes, for 48 hours at the start of next month, with a message on the main page announcing this. This covers Tom's requirement of a stated close condition, and also lets us appraise how well it works.

If it works, we can do it monthly. If it doesn't, we've learned a lesson.

I seem to recall that 'open for a few days/closed for a few days' was the policy we had in place just before the most recent complete halt on new membership, and that it didn't work very well at all. Anyone?

Tom Tit's Tot: A Girl!
16:34 / 16.02.05
Yes.

I'd like to see new people with new ideas posting here. The irritation of trolls is worth more and varied input.
