Well, I'll still count the votes up tomorrow morning but there hardly seems to be any point any more

Almost a 2:1 victory for no, for anyone that's interested, though it was only after 2/3rds of the way through the thread that the No's pulled ahead.

I think that's probably because that was about the point that a semi-workable alternative turned up- that's certainly when I changed my vote, anyway.

I'd still like it if we could work towards a state where we COULD fling the doors open, though.

or that it was only then that many of the people more minded to vote yes realized what was practical and possible...

I think that most people voted for what could be done now and not what they would ultimately like to do... which is sensible but I think it's also a pretty sad state of affairs.

so is that it then? what's the new policy? is it 'you can get on the board if you email the right people from the right email address'? if so, is that not a tightening of the rules, which before were just 'anyone can email tom from anywhere'? have we spent the last week making it more difficult for newuns to join the board?

Not exactly - two of the applications so far have been speculative, and I don't think either will be turned away; the aim is, I think, to create other criteria than "Tom thinks you are trustworthy" - presumably not everyone who emailed Tom got a Barbelith account - such as "a user is vouching for you" or "you have a recognisable (and recognisably sane) web presence". Basically, it's just moving the process of selection down from Tom to Lula and me, and to whoever else gets added as and when demand increases, and to minimise the time Tom has to spend doing admissions on an ad hoc basis.

i presume a notice describing the procedure for potentials will be placed in the wiki or somewhere? interested to see what happens over the next month or so.

Okay - what I'm suggesting is that sometime soon - ideally this weekend if I get the chance - I'll put up a page linked to from the register page which explains how the new registration process will work.

Basically people will be able to e-mail an e-mail address, probably articulating why they want to join, which will go either to just Haus and Oul or to all the mods, and people can work out which people who say they want to join and send me a list and I'll invite them to the board every so often.

How does that sound?

Sounds like a plan, Mr Coates.

Oh, and if it does turn out to be too much for two, I don't mind giving a hand.

YES.

TeN, have you actually read the preceeding 4 pages?

TeN
21:25 / 22.03.05
haha no, but i just read Tom's response a couple posts up and now I feel like an idiot. but whatever... hooray for reopening the board! (just in time too, a friend emailed me today saying he was really interested in signing up)

Is he more likely to read threads about big issues before posting to them?

I close my eyes, And this is yesterday.

Could a Policy mod lock this thread please?

Indeed, I think this does underline that fact, as Haus points out, that people tend to jump in to large and important subjects without a whit of research spouting forth their ill-conceived and uninformed and often therefore invalid 'opinions'.

I've actually disagreed the move to lock this thread- partly because I don't think there was a deliberate attempt to screw with anyone here but also because I'm going to want to respond to this thread in August and I'd rather add to an existing argument then start a whole new one. It's far more appropriate to keep these things connected- if I have to unlock the thread I'll feel like I'm abusing my moderator powers to work my own ends. Which I guess I've already done but my point is that this is going to be a continuing debate because we currently have an imperfect system in place.

If someone cares to tell why they want this thread locked for, you know, an actual reason then I'll be happy to agree to a request the second time around. I'm not being stubborn, I just don't think we should lock things here, there and everywhere.

Because it's a dead issue for the time being, and TeN just proved that there are people here incapable of realising that this vote is done. Finished. Over.

Like the thread about the wrong time stamp being put onto posts before it, it's probably just going to keep on getting bumped to the top of the forum by people who don't have the intelligence to read before posting.

10:44 / 23.03.05
Incidentally, all the actual arguments about this issue took place in another thread, so that'd probably be the best place for adding a further one to in five months' time or whatever. This one is just a collection of people going "yes", "no" and "oh, I changed my mind now that I understand what we're talking about."

Maybe lock this one and start a new one for discussion on the subject, now the vote has closed?

Tryphena Absent
11:38 / 23.03.05
Ner, we don't need another one. I'm not sure the individual stupidity of board members is a reason to lock a thread but as you point out there are a number of threads relating to this subject and it did mostly remain a voting thread so I'll put it up for locking myself.
