I constantly sift through the topics at Barbelith, particularly Convo and the Temple. Yet I rarely ever post. I watch all the debate, discussion and drama without really engaging in it. It's reality TV, Barbeloid style. And I have a number of really good reasons for doing this. I figured I couldn't be the only quiet watcher, one of those who laughs out loud at some of this stuff, or who gains insight from the flow of others' conversations. And I know I'm not the only one here who feels a little overextended. So I wonder - who else does this, and why do you do it? Just wanted a chance to meet fellow quasi-lurkers and those overwhelmed, discover their reasons for staying so damn quiet. And then hit on them. Drunkenly.

Anyway, my oh-so-complex life involves:

]massive rationalizations[

Double major at th' University o' Georgia (English and Psychology)
Learning ballroom dance - apprenticed to a performance group, dancing 2-5 nights a week (eats up my life like candy)
Learning and practicing hoodoo - candle burnings and gris-gris bags for friends, driftwork, listening to this city (sucks up my time like it was a milkshake)
Debate society
Breaking up with a significant other - a friggin' scientologist, for that matter
Jogging every other day
Conversing with my people (roommates, friends, beggars, thieves, fools)

]/massive rationalizations[

So come one, come all, and stand amazed at how little time we have to post, yet occasionally actually make the time for it! Or, come out and show me why I don't have any reason to complain. I'm sure somebody does all this while raising a family, and even has time to eat and sleep (on the weekends). Whatchall got?

Hooray for splitting up with scientologist!

I Barbelith despite having a three year old, a new business and nearly a life in London. It's not that difficult; goes with my morning coffee.

Horse, you don't post often because you have an interesting
and varied life.

I don't post often because my life is not interesting and varied enough to give me something to post about.

What's driftwork, by the way? Sounds intriging.

I don't post sometimes because whilst Barbelith isn't dying my interest in it sometimes does. I do find it satisfying when I can't post because I'm too busy rather than because there's nothing on Barbelith that interests me, but then I am one of the old holdouts from the earliest days.

We need a completely unannounced redesign and shuffle around!

I, too, don't post because I don't think it'll be worth it. Not the same kind of not-worth-it as Ganesh, I suspect.

I don't post enough on Barbelith because Barbelith is the dog's dinner. God, how I loathe you.

I don't post on Barbelith as much as I could because I subscribe to the aphorism that it's better to stay silent and be suspected a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. And frankly, even when I do, there are lovely peoples about who take great pride in belittling others for mere sport, so I prefer not to provide them with fodder for their pathology.

Well by day I have to keep up the pose of a millionaire playboy and by night I roam the city seeking out evil to thwart and criminals to vanquish.
Actually I lurk more than I post, probably because I often feel I'd have nothing to add to a thread other than "me too" or other such insightful comments.

I don't post much because I'm studying for a vocational qualification and am thus, insanely busy. Actually, I was thinking about starting a policy thread asking "is Barbelith dyyyyying" again - all the other fora bar this one seem mighty slow. Thoughts?

I've got a new job unlike the last one I have to actually work (thankfully they actually pay me).

Barbelith is indeed dying although now and again there are signs of life, a little cough or a whimper.
To be honest I'm glad that it's quiet at the moment there's less to distract me and I can get on with being an IT superstar.

I don;t think Barbelith is dying, but the fact that a number of longtime posters: Tom, Haus, Deva, Plums, Kit-Cat, 'Nesh, Xoc, Flyboy, DP Crunchy, Anna DeL etc etc aren't posting or aren't posting much for various reasons it just seems quieter. Pretty much the argumentative theory bitch types are gone and that's leaving a void centred around the Head Shop (the last reply on the last thread of the FIRST page is 09/10/04! Shows you how quiet it's been for a long time). And it seems Newbies aren't necessarily interested in playing with the old toys.

So, wuuh, good god! Barbelith, what is it good for?

Nick, Grant and Shoelaces, people I always ejoyed reading, as well as those Our Lady has already mentioned, aren't posting as often as well.

Most of my internet time is at work when I'm on a night shift. I try to follow the Lateshift and keep up to date of the Switchboard but ... KOL takes up so much time. Hell, I don't think I've read a book in weeks.

I am always around in the quad...

I would say that I am just super busy, and that is why I don't post as much as I used to, but it wouldn't quite be true... I mean, I am jolly busy, and that obviously makes it harder for me to engage properly with long conversations and more intellectually taxing debates, but that isn't the whole reason I don't post that much. I think it is really due to the fact that many of the people I knew best and respected most on the board aren't posting as much (as Flowers has identified) and, well, I seem to have run out of steam at the same time.

It's not that I'm not interested in stuff any more, it's just that my interests and those of the rest of the board don't always coincide. No doubt I could do something about this if I put my back into it, but... the flesh is weak, you know?

Yeah, the stuff that I'm into at the moment isn't stuff that the rest of Barbelith appears to have any great interest in, and vice versa. And when our interests do collide, it tends to be the things that I currently don't feel any great desire to over-analyse.

Plus, I'm a bit tired of the same old arguments.

As someone who *is* probably posting as much as he ever did (albeit a barely detectable drip of about 7 posts a week, 90% in the Convo), this thread feels disconcertingly like being dumped, by every lover ever, simultaneously, with some of them casually mentioning the other people who are also dumping you but won't be turning up to tell you in person.

In fact, it's convinced me that Spatula and I were together for a few years in the mid-90s. (You still have some of my CDs, Spatch)

I've been screwing around with the new wiki-FAQ. Bedhead and I (more Bedhead, less I) have been moving the old material from The Bomb over there, to make an interactive annotations space.

Those are big words, so I'm going to repeat them.

Interactive. Annotations. Space.

This should be sweet, sweet honey to the flies that we media geeks are.

It's also a gas looking over the old Invisibles annotations, seeing people wondering about what various panels imply. There's still plenty of room on there for more "analysis" pages, too -- little introductory thumbnails to everything from Aum Shinri Kyo and Time & Time Travel to Crowley, Aleister and Philadelphia Experiment, The.

So, that's what I've been doing.

And Kingdom of Loathing. Damn game.

I miss the frequency with which I used to post. Terribly.

A large chunk of it has been because despite having shiny new computer, I don't have internet access. Hopefully this will change in the coming weeks as I am, indeed, constructing my very own website. I am also quite busy planning an overseas trip, a move from Atlanta to Austin, writing a book of short stories, and working on a screenplay. Oh yes, and crushing out on a scruffy comedian. (Which means watching bits of bad films and trying to be nice about it in my emails.)

Man, when you write it onscreen, it makes my life a lot more interesting than it, in all probability, is.

I miss a lot of people around here. Even the Haus.

My posting dropped off dramatically after the first year or so, back in the old old days, just because it seemed that a lot of the most interesting topics had been thoroughly hashed out (Head Shop wise, anyway.) This coincided with my getting married and going traveling for about a year, which had me completely (and happily) cut off from the net.

Since I've returned to civilization I've lurked occasionally and posted in rare free moments, but the flame's never really been rekindled.

I like the somewhat slower pace of Barbelith these days - it used to require a devotion of hours a day to keep up with the most current and interesting threads, whereas now I can pop in for a few minutes here or there on a weekend and stay moderately current.

Because of work. I'm currently doing 12 hour days, six day weeks (although there was a bit of a run which saw us go for 19 days solid without a day off) with a fantastic 90 journey to work and another one home - so I check the place out for about half hour, but much more pressing things at hand at present, like sleep, sweet, sweet sleep

Plus, I'm a bit tired of the same old arguments.

I think the ban on new posters is having an effect on this- it's not just that the same arguments are happening, it's that THE SAME PEOPLE ARE HAVING THEM, and we're all getting a bit set in our ways.

1) My job is keeping me insanely busy, and I'm stressing over it sinbce I am in contention to be picked as the CEO of the company that runs the group home I'm director of.

2) I'm not reading as many comics as I used to, simply because of the time concern.

3) I'm knee deep in writing a historical novel that eats a lot of my on-line time.

4) I refuse to be a "me too" poster, and I agree with too many people on the board.

I think it's time to get some new blood, myself.

Rothkoid - Marriage? Really! You go! By the way, since you left both Mark Kermode and, from last night it seems, Rob Newman are both trying to copy the hairstyle you had whilst you were in the UK. Obviously neither of them come up to your standard...
