Sorry to burst your bubble but there's already a liger thread somewhere... I want one. ( A liger, not a thread) I will paint it green with yellow stripes and call it "BattleCat!" I will also feed it cocaine.

When I was little I thought tigers were female lions. This liger thing would have fucked me up.

By that logic, a liger would be a TGer.

But what will happen to the cub in the future, “no one can say”.

It will become the Barbelith Mascot. Right? I say we adopt.

I'll hold the ficsuit name for you if you like Snowtiger. I can do it right now...

I'll also help lead a recon mission into Russia for it. Where's the roster?

Stoatie: So long as I can have a go with the one in the back.

I mean, of course, the liger. Did somebody say ass-candling?

That poor physically challenged woman on the left with only half a right leg.

What chance has she of flight, should either Liger or Hairy Dude suddenly turn savage.

Can I be that tosser at the front?

That liger is NOT a tosser.

Chiropteran
13:04 / 31.01.05
I've seen it in person - the big cat trainers do the U.S. Ren'Faire circuit. IIRC, at less than a year old it was bigger than a full-grown male lion.

The pictures don't do it justice - it's frikkin' ENORMOUS! One of the trainers climbed up a ladder and coaxed the big kitty into stretching up on its hind legs...

Does this picture do it justice? The beast looks as though it doing a line of cocaine as well.

Justice? No. But it does help.

Damn, that's a big cat.

That ain't Sting.

That's Steve fucking Guttenberg with a blonde rinse.

I wondered what'd become of him. Apparently he's ass-candling ligers now. Better that than another Police Academy, I s'pose.

Can you get other big cat cross breeds? lumas? teetahs?
I've always quite fancied a bengal cat, though I'd have to do more research into the practicalities and ethics of keeping a cat with "wild cat" characteristics.

We're The Great Old Ones Now

A baby animal like that cannot appear in wild nature. Bengal tigers live only in India: a tiger cannot have a baby from an African lion due to 10,000 kilometers of distance between them.

Acute and detailed zoological commentary from Pravda, where there is also a picture of the liger as a cub.

Yup, you can get other big cats to cross breed. See this page for some fascinating photos and info. Though personally, I wouldn't recommend acquiring an exotic wild cat as a pet. It's expensive, difficult, and encourages unscrupulous breeding and hybridisation. I doubt you're serious about getting a "wild cat", but if you're serious about getting a cat, why not get it from your local animal shelter? I volunteered at my local animal shelter years ago, and it damn near broke my heart to see so many lovely cats and dogs sitting on death row, waiting in vain for someone to adopt them.

Nobody's girl

The reason ligers get so huge is because ligers happen when a male lion and female tiger get it on, but female lions and male tigers are the parents who normally trasmit the growth inhibiting gene. Hence humongous
ligers, but not humongous tigons.

These are tigons.

The uninhibited growth of ligers does raise (more) ethical questions about breeding them, because animals that can't stop growing would presumably encounter health difficulties as a result of this condition. Similar to giant humans who have shorter life expectancy and high risk of heart problems, etc.

What do you get if you breed a liger with a tigon? A lion and a tiger? Is there a punchline?

I'd just like to make clear that in no way would I suggest keeping any kind of actual wild cat as a pet. Bengal cats are these and as I said I have doubts about the ethics behind these animals. Also I can't actually have a cat because I live on a third floor flat.
