Proposal for a Synthetic, Universal Language
Each word is to have two forms: the new, synthetic form, and the transliteration of the the old form into the synthetic mode. This serves to legitimize the form, because it doesn't try to obliterate its origin in the obsolete.
The first step is to reverse-engineer the word to its roots. I will use sun in this example, but I'm going to use the Spanish form, sol, because Spanish etymology is not as crazy as the English. Just pretend this whole article is in Spanish. Sol's root is the Latin sol, meaning "sol". Regularize the spelling into the new, universal system, in which Z makes all sybillant noises, U makes all ecchoey-tunnelly sort of noises, L makes all lickey noises. Sol(1) becomes ZUL. You imagine the effect of time on this word, billions of mouths speaking it billions of times, throughout history and across continents. How would they change it? Probably not that much, actually, because A) we have regularized the spelling so that any remotely similar sound still uses the same letter, eg there is no D/T, no S/C/Z, no B/P, so it admits regional differences without making a big deal about it; and B) it's a short, zippy word that no one is likely to chew up.
The second step is to transliterate the old word, "sol"(2), into the new format. S becomes Z, O becomes U and L becomes L, giving us ZUL. It should be noted that, while this may resemble the new word, ZUL, it is in fact, completely different. This is a nonsense word using the archaic word and the modernized spelling. Its only purpose is the preservation of history.
Finally, you put the two together, ZULZUL. This is the new word for the ball of atomic fire that constantly threatens our very existence, and really should be destroyed.
(1) This is Latin.
(2) This is Spanish. |
