Gigs in 2005: What's coming up?

I'm sure that I'm not the only person who finds out about bands playing after they've already sold out or already played their one night of the tour that hits my town. So, I thought it would be useful to have a place where people can post up info about forthcoming gigs, and maybe make arrangements to go and see them together. And it's not restricted to London, that just happens to be where I am!

(Maybe you think this is more appropriate in the Gathering Folder, but since it's all about music that tours, I thought the Music Folder was appropriate. Move it if you think it necessary, though.)

There are a couple of gigs next month that caught my eye -- both of them kind of clash with something I was planning to do for one of those weekends -- I hadn't decided which weekend yet, so I would definitely want to go to one of them. I'm veering towards the Twisted Folk one at the moment because I love Hem...

Low, Friday 18 February. Tickets: £12.50 £15.00 £17.50 £20.00

Twisted Folk presents The Earlies, Hem & Martha Tilston, Friday 25 February. Tickets: £14.50

The Ukulele Orchestra are always great live, and they have a monthly residency at Cecil Sharp House in Camden, plus other shows at the moment. Anyone up for the February or March show(s)?

Other things:

Stuff at the Barbican:
Jazz Britannia/Gilles Peterson, Feb 12

It Came From Memphis festival: a weekend of classic soul and funk, including Stax records and Muscle Shoals, April 3-25

Dead Can Dance, April 6

Death in Vegas do the soundtrack for Chairman of the Board, April 30

Is anyone else interested in going to these? Not that I expect to get to them all. (In fact, the only things I expect from posting this is that a) anyone interested in any of these will already have tickets and have made plans, and b) this will be one of those threads that dies a death after two posts...)

Dead Can Dance, oh yes indeedy. I'm up for that, although I guess it'd've sold out about a million years before it was announced.

for people in the US, the 2005 Coachella festival will be happening April 30-May 1 in Indio, CA. no word yet on most of the acts; the only ones i've seen confirmed are M83 and Autolux, but it's usually stellar.

Well my dirté band's next gig [Brighton / London] should be a good excuse for a knee's up / dress-up, if we can actually get a 'next gig'... We're attempting to put something together at least before mid-feb.

The Presidents of the USA? Who came out with that song, "Movin' to the country/I'm gonna eat me a lot of peaches"?

That's considered metal now?

Danzig: He Pitys the Fool!
20:37 / 21.01.05
Not really. They're more a fun novelty so I can reminisce of my teenage years. Halcyon days!

More like college days for me. As for gigs, if I see anything this year, it will probably be a local band, and it will probably be on the spur of the moment. Nobody really good ever comes to my town-except for Cracker. Cracker loves us.

My diary currently features;

Help She Can't Swim, Nottingham next Thursday - dancing shoes at the ready!

Low, Wolverhampton in feb. Dancing shoes probably not appropriate.

All Tomorrows Parties, the Vincent Gallo one, April - not that I like Vincent Gallo in the slightest (I will do my utmost to foil his evil schemes!), but it's the only one there are still tickets left for, and fuck it, Afri Rampo and Lydia Lunch are already on the bill, which is good enough for me.

I'm pissed I missed Comets on Fire last week, but I'm clinging desperately to the rumour that they're gonna be doing a joint tour with Wolf Eyes later in the year - please let that be true!!

Jens Lekman for a crooner fix on 2/09
Michael Mayer for some teutonic techno 2/19
and then nothing until the No Fun Fest. (just got word that Sunn 0))) has cancelled, so not sure if I am as interested now.)

Heh. I should have known this would turn into a thread where people just brag about what they already have tickets for, instead of making suggestions about gigs to meet at...

The PWEI gigs are a perfect example of me being the last person in the entire universe who didn't know about it and no one thought to let me know, so I'm missing it. This thread was kind of designed to help prevent that in future.

So, no one wants to see Hem with me? Cos I'm sure some of you would like them too...

Going to see Manics AGAIN, this time at Hammersmith Odeon. Some die-hard fans just won't die, will they? Not even hard!

And I'm going to Reading in the summer, mainly because I've heard a rumour that Iron Maiden will be headlining, then it occurred to me that Garbage have a new album out this year, and the Manics'll attend the oepning of an envelope etc. so it just might be a very cool festival. Well, my weird and quite wrong definition of 'cool' anyway!

Yeah, I'm going to ATP. The Vincent Gallo one. Looks to be a very good line-up so far, and Peaches (again) and Suicide have just been confirmed.

Also going to the Camden Crawl, which ought to be fun. The Go! Team, Kaito, Sons & Daughters and many, many more...

Danzig: He Pitys the Fool!

Well with Festival season on the horizon, is anyone going to any this year? Any trips to far flung places, for a line-up the likes of which you'll never see in the UK?

I only ask, as i'm thinking of heading to Le Mans for 'Furyfest' this year, for some Metal Moments. I've definitely been swayed by the fact that 'Download' at Donington is filled with utter pish.

I'll probably head to Reading on the sunday as well. Can't miss Maiden! That's sacrilege. May even go and see them in Paris as well.........*drools*

Ahhh, Camden Crawl. I remember, fondly, the first one, ten years ago (am I showing my age?). The second one was good, too, but I never went to any of the others. Actually, I just dug out the two CDs for those, too, coincidentally.

Apologies for posting this halfway through the tour, but I've just found out about it, in fact i only found out about the band a week or two back. In a weird way though, they rawk with a capital RAWK.

Anyhow...Even in Blackouts (couple of members of the Queers/Screeching Weasel, for those for who that means anything), purveyors of 'acoustic punk rock' are hawking their wares on a European tour, They're playing in London tonight...with a few other dates coming up (if you're coming to the Nottingham date on Tuesday, gimme a shout and come and say hi at the gig, I'll be there with my other half).

Even in Blackouts Tour Dates

Lookout Records: Even in Blackouts

It'll be grand! C'mon!

hey, I've just learned that Japanese doom-lords BORIS are playing an apparently extremely rare outside-Japan gig at the Garage, March 14th.

Word to wise - if you're even remotely a fan of this kind of thing, GO SEE THEM. On the basis of one and a half downloaded albums, I am confident that they're one of the mightiest rock n' roll beasts on the earth and everybody in that room is going to be DESTROYED. Um, in a good way.
