I was wondering if many barbelithers were listening to podcasts much - audio streams that can be automatically downloaded to a portable music device in much the same way that RSS feeds can download abstracts of regularly updated websites...?

I was wondering if there was any content that people could recommend - both music based and spoken work based?

I just now downloaded iPodderX (Lite), and like Rock and Roll Geek and Air America's Morning Sedition.

Except Morning Sedition seems to be a day behind, which is lame...

I just googled for podcast after reading your question.

Podcast Bunker has a bunch of shows listed and ranked and described.

Insomnia Radio plays unsigned acts, mostly from New York and Philly. Mocean Worker was the standout artist of episode #16, the only one I've listened to.

This is the podcasting program I'm using, and it seems to work fine so far.

Just wondering who all is listening to podcasts now that iTunes has added it. I myself am a big fan of some of the queercasts - Feast of Fools and Yeast Radio in particular. I'm also about to give Mommycast a listen in a car crash sort of way, as I've heard it's the worst podcast out there.

I'd kind of like to start my own, if I can figure out how to get the equipment to do it.

So, podcasts - good, bad ugly: what are you listening to? Do you think podcasts are the way of the future? Or are they a medium that is ultimately too esoteric to make a dent on the press and media? Any barbeloids doing podcasts yet?

My favorite music radio show is now doing a monthly podcast version.

Rhythm Incursions

Which is apparently somewhat unique, as it seems to be the only fully approved and legit music show podcast out there. It has the full cooperation and permission of all artists and labels in the podcast. Something a lot of music podcasts don't at this time, it seems.

One of the hosts is podcasting his music blog, as well: Mr Trick's blog

Other than that, I haven't done much else with podcasting, although the Battlestar Galactica podcasts look interesting.

ONLY NICE THINGS
08:28 / 09.08.05
I've just started listening to pocasts through iTunes. Most of the amateur stuff is embarrassingly bad, which I think is going to be a far bigger problem for popularising it - there's a huge amount of dross. At present, I'm downloading the Today articles that the Beeb podcasts, Channel 5's Rumour Mill (although it's actually possibly too irritating even for the footbally goodness), the Al Franken show, Mark Kermode's film reviews and The Signal, which is a Firefly fan cast and actually probably getting dropped... have just subscribed to Insomnia and will subsdcribe to Cherry's queercasts, I think...

Does anyone have any other recommendations? The state of podacasting seems to be lilies in the cesspool at present...

Hmm... In Our Time? The BBC are giving people the chance to download the latest episode every week.

I think the series may be on hiatus at the moment, though.

Still downloading the usual BBC Suspects In Our Time is fantastic and so are Mark Kermodes film reviews - how can a man whose favourite love story is the Exorcist be wrong?

Outside of that, I'm really enjoying the Battlestar Galactica podcasts, available via itunes and direct from Scifi.com. They serve as a writer/producers commentary on each episode and really do add value to the show.

In addition, my secret vice is Meanwhile, the comics podcast. Comics related chat from some comic fans in the US...

OMG, Cherry... I totally know those people. I have never listened to their podcasts, though. I kind of have this plan to start podcasting with Manty when she moves back, not that I've told her yet. Sooo Manty, wanna podcast with me?

I just got into thanks to iTunes as well, and my two vices are Diggnation, which is great tech/net related stuff, and my ultimate vice, Major Nelson's podcast from the front lines of Xbox Live development, which is, ironically, turning into a kind of Apple to Sony's Microsoft.

I've tried some other ones, but they didn't really hold my interest. There's also a Def Jux mixtape podcast, but that's only monthly, tear.

I'll have to give that Meanwhile one a listen too.

I'm listening to podcasts, but I can download them faster than I can listen to them. I'm currently trying to condition myself out of a bias against listening to people talk on the radio, a bias conditioned in by corporate radio and a few of the more mindnumbing NPR shows. so I'm starting with podcasts that have both music and talking, and more of the former than the latter.

I really like NPR's On The Media. it's a nice mix of politics and media issues. Al Franken's show, on the other hand consistently disapoints. and that's only when I can actually get the files.

CBC's Radio 3 podcast seems really popular. it's well made, but i'm not really into the whole indie can-rock thing.

but def jux is another story. is the podcast up on thier site?

Wow, persephone!! You sure hob-nob with the famous!! How did that happen?

I keep thinking about a friend's reaction to a podcast, which was that he was really surprised something so "edgy" (for want of a better word, ugh) as what he heard on the podcast was coming out of America. I explained that as the podcasts don't need to be approved by the FCC, they can get away with a lot more than your average American radio show.

And I have heard some podcasts that are pushing the envelope of what even I can stand- I mean, Ragan Fox does a whole schtick on having abortions as a fun hobby (though in his defense it is done as a sort of protest against W's "Culture of death").

I would like to hope that an increase in popularity in podcasts will eventually put a crack the shiny veneer of mainstream media. But am I deluding myself? Are podcasts just the 'zines of the mid '00s?

Can anyone recommend any good podcast comedy - particularly if it's British, though US will do.

I'm a big fan of topical/satirical R4 type stuff.

If you are looking to listen to British radio comedy then you are best of listening to the streams of BBC radio 7 - you can listen to anything broadcast in the past 7 days whenever you want to, tho if you want to listen on your ipod you will need to creat the mp3 yourself...

For music:
Pete Radio
Usually good, but not perfect. However, I knew it was for me when he ran the Justified Ancients of MuMu's It's Grim Up North into the Tiger Lillies. Oh yes.

For talk:
Off the Wall
Political show by the editor of ur-hacker zine Emmanuel Goldstein. His other show, Off the Hook, can also be good but it's a tad geeky for my taste. EG is currently traveling around the world and doing the show via satphone etc. His trip so far has included the Queen Mary 2, the Trans Siberian Express and more. Next episode is from Mongolia.

I also listen to RU Sirius radio, and it can be good, but its too annoying to link to (he can be infuriating, the style is too US-radio like and his co-presenters are astonishingly annoying). Google for RU Sirius Radio or MondoGlobo. Or don't.

jmwalsh, thanks for the link to 'pete radio'... I never heard of the Mathletes before- they're ace! also, that song 'I hate bright eyes' cracks me up. the best musical sour grapes since 'not if you were the last Dandy on earth' by Brian jonestown massacre...

More Aussie stuff:
FBi are a Sydney indie radio station.

Podcast Network are a global concern run out of Melbourne.

Radio National podcasts also good.

I generally subscribe to the RSS feed and listen to them on my computer as I *gasp* do not have an iPod. I do have some funk USB headphones tho.

I may well end up on a business-related podcast run by some mates in US/Australia/Singapore but we've been trying to do it with Skype which is rubbish...

The Ouch podcast does, indeed, fucking rock. I haven't actually listened to it, tho, cos i practically always play music at the same time as surfing the internet, so instead i've just read the transcripts...

Is any of the music on it any good?

(the site's a pretty good starting point for anyone interested in disability culture/politics, too...)

(for a relative luddite like me, what distinguishes a podcast from "online streaming radio"?)

I've been listening to the two jacks in the hole podcast, which is the Old Host of the Circuit's, Scott Huff, personal podcast. It's pretty witty - when they hit a laugh they hit it really hard. Worth listening to for the simple fact that these two will one day be famous.

I like the daily Guardian newscast although five minutes of it is given over, sadly, to the immensely annoying diarist, John Henley. He ems and ays and ums three times per second. He ACCentuATEs THE wrong syllABles with erraTIC emphASis. Worst of all, he sucks pools of saliva through his teeth whenever he sees a full stop. Recently, he had a cold too. You cannot imagine the horror of the listening experience when he has phlegm with which to gargle, mid-sentence. *shivers*

Damn shame, because the rest of the podcast is usually quite interesting and well delivered.

I am so thrilled that the pure joy that is WBEZ's "This American Life" is finally, finally in podcast form. For those of you who don't know the premise each week the gorgeously intelligient Ira Glass and his producers take a topic and produce material around the topic. So, for example, the recent Halloween episode featured a news article about on the explosion in rabies infection among animals in the northeast U.S., reader phone-ins about times they'd been terrified by their parents, one short story and a non-fiction essay by David Sedaris on hanging out at the local morgue.

I've loved this show since it first came on the air in 1995 and my love has never waned. Download it!

I'm still not entirely clear what the difference is between podcasting and online radio (what differentiates, say, the BBC's online-for-a-week radio shows from a podcast "proper"?), but i have just found some crucial reggae podcasts at Algoriddim (currently enjoying the Phase One/Roy Francis productions one)...

I agree with Cherielabombe, This American Life is fantastic, everyone should give it a try. Here is a link to the podcast page.

WFMU has some nice (and some less nice) podcasts as well. Antique Phonograph, Sinners Crossroad, Secret museeum of the air, and Thomas Edison's Attic are all good if you like listening to quite old and sometimes weird recordings. And Downtown Soulville has some really good soul music.

And finally, Eric Kleptone of The Kleptones has started podcasting (link to the feed) with great mash-ups, mixes and good music.

So: I'm thinking of doing a podcast, although I dislike the word 'podcast' - especially since I don't have a 'pod' and won't really be 'broadcasting' in any readily understandable sense - and so might call it a DIY radio show or something instead.

I'm thinking I might record the first one tomorrow, so as a bit of initial market research; would anybody really be bothered about downloading an 80 minute zipped mp3 file consisting of me playing some really great and/or weird records and talking in between, or would the whole venture be horribly self-indulgent? - comments please.
