Anyone reading Greg Pak's mini which is a follow-up to Morrison's run?

So far we' got the return of Quentin Quire, the white-hot room, Jean Grey's rotting corpse and more.

Ambivilent on how I feel about it so far, any thoughts?

Mixed mag. Seeing Quire in that tank made me jizz, but someone decding to fuck with the nature of the phoenix after morrison did such a nice job of un-fucking it bothers me.

Oh, and Jean's alive again. She's spend what, three months in the ground, Marvel time?

I think, and I may be wrong, that this series will basicly be an extended explination of the Phoenix stuff in Here Comes Tomorrow... and provided that it dosen't screw things up too much, that's not such a bad thing. And it's pretty.

It dosen't seem like Pak has missed the point.

I actually had the oppisite reaction to Quire's return, though.

I did enjoy seeing Jean return as a rotting corpse, and then seeinf her suicide attempt.

It's way too soon to bring Jean back in any capacity, even a rotting corpse Jean. But it would be great to see Quentin as the next host...

Did anybody else here read Pak's Warlock miniseries? Iloved it. After crap chuck austen spewed all over new x-men after morrison left, i'm pretty pleased to see this guy coming in to do something fun and interesting with the characters again.

Warlock was okay, I'm digging this much more.

The art is AWESOME. Real purty. Between this and Astonishing, Grant's legacy is in pretty good hands. Too soon for this series? Maybe, sure, but if it must be done, this is as good a team as any to do it.

Good to see the Cockoos and Quentin again, and I like the idea of Zombie-Jean fighting the Phoenix force, using her influence to signal danger to Logan by having the outer form take on the Dark Phoenix appearance.

I speed-read this at the store. So, it's QQ's life force taking over Jean's body and such? (if so, QQ is being played as quite sinister and/or manipulative) Or the Phoenix force itself? Or are we not supposed to know yet?

Go away, read it again, come back.

well, I might not, since I don't really care too much about this mini. Land's art is pretty but seems the wrong match for an X-book somehow.

And I'm just not ready for Jean to 'come back' so soon, or even be dealt with at all so soon after Morrison's run. So it's just blithe curiousity that has me wondering more about the contents of this book.

Look, if you aren't going to spend even a fraction of your time reading this to a level of sufficent understanding (took me all of three minutes) or least mine a synopsis for the BASIC GODDAMN FACTS, why post about it?

A bit hostile, no?

I can recall many times on Barbelith when people have said "give me spoilers, what's such-and-such book about?" and gotten what they asked for.

But you must do what you think is right, of course (to quote Ben Kenobi).

Finder, I REALLY want to say that Endsong is the sequel to the cemetary kiss.
SPOILERS...

It breaks down like this: It's illegal to own it, It's illegal to sell it, but if you're the proprietor of an issue... The consciousness of the Phoenix "Entity" is aroused by Shi'Ar science/magic. It's confused be awake alluvasudden. And the Shi'Ar are confused that the Jean Grey lifeform is not present, but the raptor display appears anyway.

The Shi'Ar swat the raptor with more science/magic, and the Phoenix Entity wakes up again in the body of a firefly on Earth. Still confused, but drawn to familiarities, the firefly flies in on the cast memebrs of the New X-Men. QQ is seen after the Cuckoos suggest his telepathic strength. People are led to believe that the Phoenix Entity wants to "join" with QQ as its new host at this point, but says "he's all broken". I took it as the Phoenix Entity just wanting to talk to a powerful telepath. And unfortunately, QQ's brain is all telepathic super-lightspeed energy now, so there's no sense to be made of anything for the poor boy.

Slowly the Phoenix Entity begins to remember her surroundings and more of herself. She floats in over Emma and Scott, and theres a scene where Scott remembers Jean. This instructs the Pheonix Entity to go to Jean's grave and ressurect her, because she enjoyed the memories Scott had of her.

Jean's soul/mind is dragged back into the body and she pulls herself out of the ground. Jean sees the separated Phoenix Entity and wonders why they aren't together in Heaven/White Hot Room. The Phoenix Entity wonders back: why isn't Jean Grey with the Entity in deep space? There's an obvious division between what Grant did with Phoenix in Jean Grey, and how Pak is reconciling the whole "hosting" apsect.

Dude, for real. Pick it up. It's REALLY decompressed, but it's beautiful, and the characters are acting more in line with what Morrison left than anything Claremont is suggesting.

thank you for the summary, Chad. it's nice to see that someone remembered to bring their manners to the table.

What's weird is that the Phoenix Entity, if you follow the Excalibur 52 logic and the subsequent Galactus fight and farewell, the Phoenix Entity was the reason Rachel exhibited Pheonix powers, and ended up merging with space, thereby dying and ridding us once and for all of the Phoenix Entity.

Now we all debated the role of the Phoenix during Grant's run, and whether Jean was in fact ALWAYS the Phoenix, like Jesus was ALWAYS God, but aren't we ALL GOD? I'm asking for backup fro mthe Temple on that one. Grant implied that Phoenix, "the phoenix consciousness" was a threshold met by powerful psychics. This rings true in the case of Feron.

But what's strange now is that the Entity seems to have Jean Grey's memories from her time as headmistress in NEW X-MEN. One could easily suggest that the Entity has access to all "Pheonix" memories, and cross-downloaded them from the short time both it and Jean were "dead". But then why would Jean know things that the Entity doesn't know...

It's a mystery... Who is this woman? It's like f-ing Donna Troy at this point.

I have the issue in front of me and I wanted to get this down:

The Phoenix only shows interest in QQ after the Cuckoos says the following:

You only THINK you want him.

Because HE wants you.

Shut up.

You know who he reminds me of?

Who?

Quentin Quire, stupid. ...

The Phoenix shows interest in being wanted. That's what drove her to Scott, then to Jean, and is now driving this whole ressurrection.

Here. Fucking mental!

SPOILERS

YOU'VE BEEN FUCKING WARNED, SUNSHINE

SERIOUSLY THESE WILL MAKE YOU STERILE!

Ok ok ok... so the return of the Phoenix force whatsit makes Quentin regenerate... he digs up Sophie, and he wants the phoenix to regenerate her like it did to Jean! Horee shit! This is fucking mad! It's like Pak's throwing whatever he can at the wall to see if it sticks. Phoenix vs Shi'ar! X-Men vs Phoenix! Omega level telepaths fighting for control of cosmic forces!!

I haven't slept, pls excuse.

So if Beast is creating a containment egg, does that mean that this series is going to end with them leaving Jean on the moon? Sure looks like it.

Ah... so I would guess that I'm the only one who's read it who thinks it's just BALLS, then, am I?

I like Greg Land's art, but not here. It looks to me like this is the big anti-Moz retcon done by throwing much of the totems of his run in a big blender, watching it squirm agonizingly as it awaits its demise as the finger inches closer. There's no joy in it for me, even if I hadn't liked George's run half so much.

And Logan looks entirely too photogenic for me to take seriously. Even Hugh Jackman ain't that pretty.

My "Don't exactly know what" was pretty much that. I was HOPING they'd keep the cast down to mere NXM players -you know, the relevent ones. And for me, Quentin was a surprise, but an uninvited one. I'd rather he be left "dead" or whatever.

Land's art is great, but i feel the same way about metrosexual Logan.

Huh...I read the first few pages of #2 at popcultureshock and it was really pretty intelligent soap opera/character stuff with Scott and Emma talking about Jean. Now I see the whole issue is free to read at milehigh...and I just might buy the second issue now that I've checked that out. Seems pretty decent.

You know, I think it's cool that the last few artists to draw the cuckoos over the years since Morrison have shown them to age a bit and get older...that's a rare thing in comics...although I think the fact that they're hot blondes might have something to do with it...

Greg Land's art didn't used to be this super-photoshopped cheesecake...his early Birds of Prey work, and even his earlier CrossGen work, wasn't *quite* this 'swimsuit issue/model tracings' oriented.

The Falcon

I don't like Land. His stuff shares a vacuous quality with the likes of Turner and Horn.

I guess what I'm saying is his stuff didn't used to be so vacuous, but ever since his end run on Sojourn at CrossGen (more and more photoreferences of supermodels, all female faces looking the same) it's been becoming more and more such.

I looked through the second issue of this yesterday and I have to say, even if QQ is back, even if the writing is decent, I actually am beginning to actively dislike Land's art. So much so that I didn't even want to buy it to read it fully.

Just out of curiosity...what don't you like about Land's art, Finderwolf? Is it too cheesecakey/beefycakey for your tastes? There's no denying that it's very pretty, but it's also very stiff (for a lack of a better word). The art seems frozen, the characters stuck in poses and not in natural stances (imo, anyway).

Edit:

Doh! Stupid me, I didn't read the above replies. Disregard my question, Finder (you did, anyway - lol).

XXII:X:II = XXX
06:51 / 05.02.05
Again, looked at this at the store Friday, and was distinctly unimpressed. Among other problems, when did QQ get a mohawk? That's not how I read his hairstyle in the Quitely art. (oh, haha, silly question, he's been reconstituted so he can have any hairstyle he wants.) And since when was he telepathic? Did anyone else ever see anything to suggest that? (oh, haha, he's been dead, so he gains weird powers by dint of coming back, move along, nothing to see here.)

Wolverine's a little less pretty this time out, but nevertheless, I've begun to see through Land's art and realize that it's more to the credit of the colorist than the artist that these images have the photorealistic quality they do. But still, like Emma in her diamond form, there's no sensation of emotion in these events. You mean to say that upon coming on the form of his recently deceased wife, who died before he could truly reconcile with her, Cyclops' first instinct is to throw her in a containment unit? Yeah, tell me another.

Sorry, this issue only cements my opinion of this series as a steaming mound of turds. Truly disappointing.

slash plus comma And since when was he telepathic? Did anyone else ever see anything to suggest that? (oh, haha, he's been dead, so he gains weird powers by dint of coming back, move along, nothing to see here.)

Hardly. New X-Men #134, QQ's first appearence, he uses telepathy to remove a fellow student's illusion of himself being a cool and attractive guy, issue #135 The 'Previously' page describes him as an Omega Level Telepath. That's why he could become a Phoenix like Jean in the last issue of Morrison's run. HTH.
