raucous Glasgow Barbemeets

Apparently not.

Southside has Victorian grandeur too. And red sandstone.
Man, I love the red sandstone in Glasgow. I spent a year in Dundee, which I'm sure is full of lovely people but its sooooooo grey.

And the rain. You have to love the rain.

Okay, maybe not.

Yeah, there's nothing better than the way the sandstone looks at sunset in summer. So warm and, I dunno, almost soft looking. Strokable, even. Not what people think of when they think of Scary Industrial Glasgow, anyway.

The rain I'm not so sure about. At least there's fifty-seven varieties of it, though: Chubby Rain; Shy, Delicate Artistic Rain; Is It Rain Or Is It Mist?; Angry Rain... I don't think you actually get surprised by rain anywhere else. It keeps you on your toes.

So, are you a Weegie by birth, or by choice?

I know nothing about Glasgow, but I'd just like to point out that I am also a no-life, weird hours keeping fool, so am always in the same situation on weekends, where it's really annoying that Barbelith's so quiet.

no-life, weird hours keeping fool

I'd almost managed to stop thinking "what the hell are you doing wasting what's left of your youth contributing to a thread about nothing?" until you posted that, Stoatie.

Cheers.

Anyway, how are ya?

I'm good: I'm currently downloading "Hello" for Blogger so I can start adding pictures to Kerosene Oyster Hell, having just been emailed a picture of me in Iceland standing next to a stuffed stoat. I've just woken up after about 3 hrs sleep, and am awake copying CDs (Best of the Shangri-Las... a thing of joy) for the next couple of hours before I go back to bed so I can be in work tonight...

...but I'll probably just end up playing Rome: Total War instead. There's a pesky Gaulish incursion that needs crushing.

Hi guys, I too have nothing to do on a saturday so I'm ripping mp3s and browsing the 'lith. I'm moving back to Glasgow in January after spending a year living with my parents to help clear my student debt.

What with Rome:Total War and Half-Life 2, I am currently lamenting my lack of a grunty PC. Or really any kind of PC at all.

Hopefully, my Mac won't take that personally and start fucking shit up. Although I understand there's an XBox version of the latter forthcoming sometime next year, so hopfully that'll placate it. It has a habit of blowing its screen when I upset it, sadly.

Iceland, eh? It's somewhere I've always wanted to go, along with Japan and New Zealand. How was it? I'm guessing it was cold...

Ah, I love the rain here, although some types more than others. Rain and sandstone mix well, they give the city a nice moist look, like a sponge. Also another upside is that the city is so Green because of it. That's a trade-off I'd make any day.

Chubby Rain

Love it.

Hiya Stoatie.

I'm in the office, pretending to work. Actually, I am working, a little, but without much enthusiasm. I am a bit overloaded with projects at the moment (which I feel obliged to take on owing to that well-known malady, student's penury), and a bit too knackered to feel up to doing any of them. Bah, humbug, etc etc.

Wow, more weekend 'lithers.

Where have you been all the weekends I've been here fruitlessly hitting "Refresh"?

They're just a little shy is all. A little bit of coaxing and you've got a rockin' party.

Stoatie, Shangri-La's! That's what my iTunes has been missing! I think I have that somewhere, but it's been too long. I'm going to have to look it out.

Just for the record, I am not as tragic as that made me sound.

Yeah, it was fairly fucking cold. But hey! We saw the Northern Lights and everything. I've been there twice now and I so want to move there. It's so... clean.

Hey, KCC! Long time no see!

Hey there Stoats - how are you? Are you coming to the pub tomorrow?

I have been around, just not very vocal (or online equivalent) - been very busy, so reading more than posting...

I think part of the reason for the low level of weekend posting is just that people post most when they're chained to office desks - the weekend is a welcome break from the computer screen... (and in my case at least, even if I'm working on the computer at home, we don't have internet access).

Don't like this being in the office on a Saturday afternoon lark one little bit.

I agree KCC, after spending fourty hours staring at a screen it's the last thing I want to do at the weekend.

I'm missing my girl, who's in her hometown for her Xmas carol concert, and I'm too poor to go with her. Just thought I'd post this for Stoatie...

Eurgh, not her again.

"Hi guys, I too have nothing to do on a saturday so I'm ripping mp3s and browsing the 'lith."

Likewise. Though actually, I have quite a lot to do. Any suggestions on a Christmas dinner menu? Ham was voted out in favor of pot roast by my bf's mother, so am building around that.

Pot roast
Stewed carrots
Caramelized onion tartlets
Green salad
Mashed potatoes
Chocolate cake
Creme brulee

Blah, sounds so boring. I could use advice on the chocolate cake, also. The bf is fond of moist, fluffy cakes, and I prefer dense, more breadlike cakes. Any fluffy experts have recipes or advice?

I will clean my train tracks while awaiting your response.

Oh, and rye bread with currants and pecans with lots of salt on the crust, plus cheese plate.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Bastard.

I'm back, anyway. Briefly. Those fucking stripey-trousered Gaulish motherfuckers had obviously been at the magic potion. It all started so promisingly, but now the House of Julii lies in ruins and I have to go back several save games to even begin to figure out where I went wrong.

Guess you're not there anymore, KCC, but to any other London 'lithers- I MAY be going to the pub tomorrow... all depends on how many of my minions phone in sick tonight, really. If it's as many as last night then there's every chance I'll still be there at ten in the morning, in which case getting up early to go the pub before work may be impossible.

I'm still seething about those Gauls. I should probably eat something and go back to bed. For the glory of Rome, opbviously.

Home again. For once, my shopping trip worked and I actually bought some clothes. Hurray! Princes Street wasn't as manic as I expected either. And it was a beautiful, blue-sky day, though it's a bit nippy out there.

Nightclub Dwight: I have to say your idea of a boring meal is very different from mine: all that sounds ace, especially the caramelised onion tartlets. Unfortunately my baking skills are non-existent so I can't help with the cake recipe.

Thanks, phyrephox. I suppose it doesn't seem like enough food to me. For holidays, one likes a feast, the feeling of plenty.

Ariadne, sounds like a very pretty day over there. I'm impressed with your shopping courage -- I'm not going anywhere near retailers today, for fear of my life.

Stoatie: Post pictures of Iceland! I want to see where the Elves live...

I have to head out to work in a few hours (oddly enough, tonight my work is paying me to accompany some Christmas Carolers with my fiddle....)

It seems a nice Saturday all the same... I'm just working through my 'list of things to do before January' and thanking Someone that I don't have to be out working retail with Holiday Madness today....

Jesus Mordant! Where the hell do you get all these?

I have prescient nightmares of you amassing a huge evil doll army. You started off by introducing them innocently enough into the one thread, but they're spreading quickly. Pretty soon, I reckon you'll have replaced us all with scary doll versions.

I know your game, sunshine.

18:29 / 18.12.04
What's even more scary is that if you haven't been in your neighbours' houses for a while, they might all be amassing there.

You mean you'd step through the door (unlocked? But how..?), maybe calling your friend's name, then you'd slowly open the door to one of the rooms and it's be all dark, and then you'd flick on the light and there they'd all be, glazed eyes staring at nothing, rows and rows of unblinking faces... and you'd stand there gazing at them in disbelief and then suddenly every tiny scary head would swivel round to stare straight at YOU?

That's brilliant Meludreen, it's spooky as fuck! She would EAT Chucky alive.

(not sure the Stoat will agree about the brilliant bit though)
