He is a PHD Psychologist,a Reichian student of Regardie's with a few books to his name. This makes him more accompished than 93% of people on this forum?

That's funny you mention this because Hyatt himself seems to downplay his credentials and often times trashes them as being superficial or irrelevant. I think I am of that small minority (obviously, haha) that has found much use for Hyatt's ideas and methods. I like his insulting writing style. When I first encountered his books, after many years of reading RAW's stuff, I was a little disappointed and felt much the same way as many people here have expressed but I kept reading it and really enjoying it and came to realize that what he seems to be doing is trashing what we expect out of books, similar to what Burroughs was attempting to do; destroy language using language being that language seems to be the catalyst for hypnosis. I used to think of Hyatt as RAW in a pissed off mood and even thought they were the same person at one time. Of course I don't think that anymore, well at least not all the time, Haha.

Which can be a thinly veiled way of drawing attention to them in a manner which is more acceptable to people not aware of the trick.

That makes a lot of sense actually, here I was thinking he was just a bad writer, but he's actually being a bad writer on purpose in order to destroy language and free us all from hypnosis. It all becomes clear.

Hyatt likes to be referred to as "the doctor" by his associates.

I think his books are, with some exceptions, generally interesting, but I also get the feeling he might be sitting at his computer laughing at me. I always get the sneaking suspicion that he just gets a kick out of messing with people.
It's hard to figure out when he's serious and when he's not. He's definitely taking a shit sometimes, but whether there's a deeper plan behind it is unclear.

I think the best description of Hyatt was someone up there who said he comes off as a cranky RAW. That's probably my problem with him, he doesn't really have much of a style. His work, what I've read of it, comes off as bargain-basement Discordianism at best, though I did like his chapter on strangling fantasies at the end of "Undoing YOurself". Then again it's written under a different name so for all I know he didn't even write the thing.

"Hyatt likes to be called 'the Doctor' by his asociates."
So did Anton La-Vey,I suppose the difference being that Hyatt having a PHD entitles him to be called "Doctor."
Apolitician in my country got an honourary PHD from some redneck university in the south of the USA,and became known to some as Doctor Ian Paisley.

Skip Hyatt. Read his buddy Antero Ali instead. Undoing Yourself is an entertaining scribble of acid wackyness with a few pages of good Reich. Angeltech is the real manual on applying the 8 circuit model, wherein things Hyatt rambles incoherently about like Chapel Perilous are described in comprehensibly useful form. There are still acid scribbles, but less of them. Then look into Ali's buddy Rob Brezsny for the best stuff to come out of that clique to date.

Or if you really like the acid scribbles, page through mr. "I can take an entire gallon of liquid LSD and still be ok" Ram Dass's Be Here Now for the very best of eastern enlightenment boiled down to its resolving points, all of which in hand drawn madness. Truely, a mind altering experience to read, for what that's worth.

Hyatt, his real name is Alan Miller, actually was one of only four students Regardie ever had (the other three where Patricia Behman, LarryEpperson/Adan Forrest; and a guy called William Kennedy who killed himself). Still, for all that, I wouldn't buy 99.99% of any magick books available today (including his). His "Enochian Sex Magick" is just Crowley's Liber vel Chanokh repackaged with a few pages of commentary. Instead of paying $15, you can just read Chanokh free in "The Equinox" on-line. There's too much there out on the web to bother buying most of this stuff. My recommendation is to explore the classics on-line before devising a reading list/plan for yourself.

I just received this obituary....

Alan was Born July 12, 1943, in Chicago, IL to Leonard Miller and Bertha Freidman. At 17 he left High School, and joined the United States Navy. Later he obtained his GED during his military service, and upon separation from the navy, embarked upon his long and impressive academic journey. His academic career began at Los Angeles City College, where he studied accounting. He then obtained a BA degree from Cal State Los Angeles, an MA in Psychology from Cal State Los Angeles, an Advanced M.Ed from The University of Southern California, a Ph.D. in Psychology at Western University as well as another Ph.D. in human behavior from USIU. His specialty was in experimental and clinical psychology, and he practiced as a psychotherapist for many years and operated his own Freudian clinic in Southern California.

Alan was an accomplished, and sea worthy sailor, who once embarked upon a journey to sail around the world. He founded and led the 1st AIDS SAILATHON, which raised money for AIDS research by sailing from Long Beach, Ca to Honolulu, Hi in 1993. He was best known as an accomplished writer; writing under the pen name Christopher Hyatt, Ph.D. He authored well over 70 books, many of which pertained to the "Occult" and "Magick." His interest in the occult began in his early twenties. His desire to further pursue his studies in magick resulted in meeting Israel Regardie in the 1970s. Regardie introduced him to Reichian therapy, which he insisted Alan learn prior to any magickal pursuits. Regardie further instructed Alan in the magickal system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

He is survived by Linda Miller, his loving and faithful wife of 30 years, his son Michael R.Miller, his daughter Farrah Miller, his Aunt Dorothy Mallin, and three first cousins: Bob Rosen, MD, Toby Silverstein, and Michael Freidman.

Bummer.

I'll raise a glass tonight to a guy who, for all his faults, turned me on to some nifty Reichian/magical exercises.

His reach exceeded his grasp, but, after all, isn't that what a heaven is for?

Another glass raised. I read Undoing Yourself at 18, and somehow it gave me the impetus to terminate an unhealthy and stagnant relationship that I was in at the time. A little kick in the pants. It was good.

Later, I exchanged a few e-mails with the good doctor regarding some of the finer points of the Reichian exercises in his books. He was friendly and helpful. And those exercises are pretty powerful. I only practiced them regularly for a few months, but the practice seemed to open me up a lot... I started eating fish again after being vegetarian for over two years (health improved dramatically), moved to a different city, started studying Crowley more seriously, did a lot of LBRPs, and eventually went to India where I had some crazy religious experiences. Now, that wasn't all because of Hyatt, but his work did help me quite a bit at the time.

And I still do those crazy facial exercises every day when I wake up in the morning, much to the amusement of my girlfriend and daughter.

So, cheers Dr. Hyatt, you crazy old fuck.

Thats too bad. Had some problems with some of what he said, but Undoing Yourself is classic in my book. Sure, he was cantankerous and grumbled a lot, but that's part of what I liked about him. I suppose nows a good time to re-visit some of his writings.
