Scan please? (the Grant character designs from Wizard)

Pretty please?

Rich Johnston reports over in this week's Lying in the Gutters that a Maryland schoolchild who got a copy of Grant's X-Men: Imperial paperback in a school library freaked out over 'erotic images, talk of molestation and other adult content', or some such nonsense. He has a link:

also Grant-related, from Rich's column this week: Scott Lobdell implies that Grant Morrison was a "coward" for not putting Northstar in his X-Men book. Sure, Grant must be a homophobe and afraid to court edgy issues regarding gays because he didn't want Northstar in his book. Riiight.

>> LOBDELL: Also, keep in mind that over the years, I've left more
than a few lasting impressions. WHITE QUEEN, since
being turned in GENERATION X, has been front row and
center of the X-Verse for ten years now...BLINK has
been class hottie for nearly as long. And NORTHSTAR
essentially joined the X-MEN when I did Eve of
Destruction...(I can't believe Grant and Joe were too
cowardly to just keep him on the team at the time.)
And while I genuinely can't keep track of who is alive
or dead anymore, certainly some of the GEN X kids are
still around.

I think having science fiction British Asians in a comic book is enough for me to say, at this point, that Vimanarama looks like Rogan Josh. I don't expect it will actually be like Rogan Josh but it is the closest parallel I can offer at this stage.

it wouldn't have anything to do with Northstar being a C-list hero whose history largely revolves around his being an alum of Alpha Flight, a C-list team if there ever was one.

and, hey, speaking of Alpha Flight being a C-list team, that has nothing to do with why Lobdell's Alpha Flight failed, either. it's because Marvel didn't push it hard enough, or the audience is too narrow-minded, or something.

'dec previews' has a three page preview of vimanarama. i can't scan them at the moment. i'll see if i can get access to a scanner tomorrow, unless someone else does it first. it looks great. i love philip bond's art. has he done anything else with morrison beside his work on the invisibles? the subterranean fossil demons look far more promising than the archons of the invisibles, but have to wait and see i guess. the archons never really did much for me. just always seemed kinda silly. quimper and satan were way better. hopefully the 'dark wunns' will be more evil and sinister. however, it is a love story and has ufo's, but it's an apocalyptic love story and the ufo's sound like engines of war. best lines from the spread: "did you just hear a noise like a dozen pairs of scissors opening and closing?", "when did everything stop being normal?"

Bond did the pencil chores on Garg Marginsin's 'Kill Your Boyfriend', from some years back. I enjoyed Bond's Satanstorm art a bit more, but Kill Your Boyfriend is fucking great.

I always felt as though I could reach out and touch the King of all Tears's smooth, insectoid carapace.... Made me feel sick. Nasty in a "Urrggh! Dr Who special effect come alive!" kind of way. The fossil demons seem to be about a different kind of horrid.

*Squeeeeeaaaaal*

It does. But as far as I'm concerned there is space in the world for anything that looks and sounds like Rogan Gosh.

Agreed. Asian culture is hardly well represented by mainstream comics, so I'm all for this. Looks a fuck sight less hallucinatory and twisted than RG, though.

In that same previews as the above scan, there are the sketches printed in Wizard by Grant and J.H. Williams for the Seven Soliders designs, reminding us all that Grant is a pretty good artist as well. His designs for the new Guardian were particularly good. If you scanned the Vinayarama stuff, can you scan the Grant sketches for Seven Soldiers just for fun...?

Yeah, Grant's design for the Manhattan Guardian is very cool, as are all of them, really. I've tweaked the Guardian slightly at our editor's request, but it's more or less what appeared in Wizard.

Please tell me he hasn't been tweaked to be less riot-cop/submit-to-the-sexy-gold-fascist? Oh wait, you mean you tweaked it *before* that image from Newsarama... Nice work.

Very cool! Thanks for scanning that!

My first thought when I saw the Guardian profile was (after thinking "that's so cool that Grant can draw!") that the profile looked kinda like a Steve Pugh drawing. The chin and lips look like Steve Pugh's. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? Probably not. I like Steve Pugh's art, though.

There's no way I'm going to be able to take Klarion seriously. He's Eddie Munster for Grodd's sake.

Mario
17:11 / 04.12.04
As it happens, Grant addresses that in the article:

"I wanted to get away from the 'Eddie Munster' look, so I went back to [Jack] Kirby's original Puritan look with some new influences - the leather armor is inspired by paintings of Oliver Cromwell, the 17th century Puritan reformer, and Marilyn Manson's stage wear - and tried to create the poster boy for Nu-Puritan Goth!"

Characters arcs I can see myself buying before Barbelith convinces me to get the rest:

Zatanna, Frankenstein, Black Cop, Bulleteerette, Mr. Miracle

Yeah! I'm with Klarion all the way, roll on April!

Doesn't Grant just rock? Life on Earth wouldn't be anywhere near the same without him.

I was looking forward to Vimanarama long before I saw this, but now I'm twice as happy.

so, I'm not clear on this, are the books going to be released simultaneously, or one after the other?

CameronStewart
14:36 / 05.12.04
They're going to be staggered, so that (I think) two of them come out each month. The entire 7 miniseries will run from February 2005 up to somewhere in early 2006.

John Octave

That is a GREAT tweaking/redesign for Mister Miracle. Really pretty art on Grant's part in general, I gotta say. He's made a woman with a bullet for a head look sexy. That's an accomplishment.

So, from the limited bit of information we have, which book is looking the most promising, d'you think? I for one am most excited for Frankenstein.
