I don't know how much diegetic time passes during a series, but I think this last one might have stretched credibility a bit too tautly by giving Mark a new girlfriend every week (albeit each one meticulously doomed to dumpage). Mark might, of course, be devastatingly attractive to some, but one of the primary motifs of his character has always been that he doesn't think he is, so effectively, he isn't.
Re-reading the thread, I noticed Smoothly's comment that the show seems to work better with less plot and more inner monologue (please correct me if I'm misrepresenting you, Smoothly!). I find myself heartily agreeing, and recently the writers seem to have got a bit preoccupied with coming up with one zany scheme or situation after another to throw Mark and Jez into. I think maybe it's stronger as character comedy rather than plot comedy. If such a distinction is worth anything - I mean, the best comedy can be both, I suppose. |
