CRISIS ON MSN CONVERSATIONS!

So anyway, some time ago someone I didn't know added me to MSN. Baffling. Clicked "yes", seeing as I'm a tolerant sort.

Anyway, today I was reading through some Flex Mentallo .cbrs (naughty me!) when the following happens:

theroadtorio@hotmail.com says:
Heelo can I have your barbelith password please? I don't have a suit and the board is currently closed

BASEBALL FURY says:
yo, who is this again?

theroadtorio@hotmail.com says:
knodge

Uh. Already I was feeling uncomfortable. Searchy-search. Ugh. Block block block.

So it seems chummer has seen I'm a bit of an angry one and is trying to recruit me or something.

Not a chance, arsehole.

So be aware, dear lithfolk - Knodge is on the prowl. Thought you all could do with the heads up, you know? Anything I should be worried about now he's made first contact?

He might email you. Tell him to fuck off (or just that you're not interested in having communication with him, or however you want to put it). Ignore any further attempts to contact you after that. Block his email address.

Might not happen, but it's best to be sure.

What I want to know is how did knodge get your MSN ID?

Hmm. I recently received an automated 'tom@barbelith.com' email reminding me of my Barbelith password - suggesting that someone's been trying to guess their way into my account. I thought he'd registered loooads of fake suits last time the board was open to new members. Double-hmm.

Good time to change passwords, folks...

What I want to know is how did knodge get your MSN ID?

Your MSN ID's the same as your Hotmail address. If that's readily accessible, then you can be approached through MSN Messenger. Just say no...

Clever boy, that Knodger.

Cheers for the headsup, btw.

Oh yeah, and it might also be worth being at least a li-i-ittle bit sceptical of old posters popping up out of the blue, inquiring whether it's okay to adopt 'joke racist' fictionsuits and asking why we censored that Knowledge chap, who expressed such genuinely revolutionary views.

Isn't he on another round-the-world virginity-losing trip? You'd think our boy would have plenty to occupy him without feeling the need to shit on Barbelith again...

Nahh, that one doesn't look like him. One of the Ben/James/Steve axis, perhaps?

Well, whether or not the photo is of Knodger, is irrelevant, Ganesh. I could post up a pic of Dame Edna and say that was me if I wanted to. I personally do not use dating sights...at all, so that is not where this Andrew idiot found me. He also sent about 4 of these, and it concerned me considering that he has hacked his way into people's computers. So I kept this email and decided not to be too dismissive about it.

Sorry, I mean the whole tone and style of writing didn't look like him; I've absolutely no idea what our boyo physically looks like.

He may well be a dubious stalker; I just don't think he's our dubious stalker.

.
14:51 / 11.11.04
Hi. I'd say that rather than being a stalker, that email is some sort of crafty spam. Hence the links to www.Seekafriendlymatch.com ... Cunning, but ultimately safely ignorable.

I got some mail on my site from someone I didn't know, who asked me how to get into Barbelith; I actually forgot to reply but they sounded a bit like they were trying too hard anyway. I was just going to say "mail Tom about it".

I don't think it's certain that it was a knodge by any means though.

There are lots of reasons why somebody might want to be let into Barbelith. Unfortunately, due to some problems with trolls, Tom has had to limit access.

If you don't know anybody in good standing on Barbelith, then you might have to accept that it will be quite hard to get on board. That's a pity, but until we have a viable mechanism built into the technology of dealing with determined trolling, it's an unfortunate necessity.

The fact that Andrew has found nothing more fulfilling in his life than to continue to seek ways to get the attention of a group of people who think he's a joke is very sad for him, but it's not really our problem. Like any troll, if he has enough time and energy to waste he will probably get over the wall eventually. That's not really a big deal. If one of us wants to help him get his book published, his nob touched, or Grant Morrison to return one of his letters (as in, write a reply rather than just send the letter back unopened with "not interested at this address" written on it), and thus give him something else to do with his life, that would be very noble and charitable, but as a board Barbelith already knows what to do. Ignore, delete, ban, alert the relevant authorities where necessary, keep the evidence on file.

So, if somebody you don't know asks for your Barbelith password, don't give it out. Not because the request may come from Andrew, but because, if you gave your email address to a total stranger, you would not be surprised if that stranger then changed your password, used your email for his or her own purposes and read your email for his or her own amusement. Likewise, if a total stranger asks you to "get them into Barbelith", expain that you can't, and that they should email Tom and talk to him.

Also, you may want to amend your profile to include a working email address, (which you can then keep private) - otherwise if you forget your password it will be impossible to get it back, and it might thus prove quite hard to get back into your suit...

I just tried to take the advice given above and change my email address, only to receive the notice that it has already been taken. Any way I can find out who's got it? It's mine, and obviously I don't care for the notion that somebody else is using it. Hopefully this is just a glitch?

Best to email Tom. It's possible that your email is registered to a dead suit you used to own, or that there has been a glitch...

Errrm, does this thread sound a touch Knodgey? I'm not an expert but the whole "I know Ganesh and Wales and getting a friend to do it" had a certain ring to it.

Lock and delete requests are in (including caveat that if anyone has a good reason to believe it ISN'T Knodge they shouldn't agree them- can't say fairer than that, can you, but personally it reeks of Knodger to me).

Ganesh
23:51 / 12.12.04
Yep. Then again, a whole load of stuff smells like Knodge to me - which is probably more a reflection of changes in the board than changes in him.

Hmm. (Having read more of the link in question, my certainty level's gone up from 9% to 100, at the very least.
Someone else has put in a delete request, though, and it seems to have gone through this time.

Just to be clear: Calvinballronan is not, or at least *was* not, one of Andrew's suits, although the fact that he has come back to Barbelith just to post this message suggests that the suit is either hacked or very trusting.

If Andrew had any sense, he would steer clear of this nonsense, if only because it is creating a mass of evidence that is going to be a bit embarrassing should his legendary book ever actually come out and should he want to function as a public individual. As it is, we do the usual. Archive, delete, notify authorities where necessary, get on with our lives.

It's back...
I've PMed calvinballronan (giving him/her the benefit of the doubt) and explained the situation, and chucked a lock and delete request at it again.

I have PMed calvinballronan a link to this thread.

More generally, next time this happens, could whoever is contacted think about it, as Dudley did? If he was *really* a friend of Ganesh's, wouldn't he be able to contact him? And wouldn't he be able to become a member of Barbelith, with Ganesh's support, and post his own link? Why would he have to email/IM random members of Barbelith who have left their email address visible on their profile page and ask people to post for him?

It looks like Andrew is going through profile pages looking for people who have left their email addresses public, and joined recently enough not to remember that and why he was permanently ejected, and is attempting to troll the board/take control of suits through emailing or IMing them. As usual, archive, delete, ignore. If you are contacted by somebody using this method, see above. Calvinballronan will probably reveal fairly quickly whether he is hijacked or just very obliging.

hey there, got the PM's and understand the situation...all i'll say is, whatever rep this guy has, he's charmed the friend of mine who asked me to pass on his url. Thanks for PMing me abt this,

Calvinballronan is trolling, after a year and a half or so of silence. There's a fair chance that his suit has been cracked by Andrew - he also seems to have changed his story - now a friend of his was "charmed" into providing the URL. I'd suggest maybe giving him the benefit of the doubt once more, then killing the suit, registering the IP details, the usual.

Actually, now that I think about it, there's a pretty easy way to do this. Ronan - could you post to your blog, thus demonstrating (possibly) that you are still the possessor of this suit, and if not that the person who has hijacked your suit is ready to break the law by passing himself off? Thanks.
