Zostrianos: I also live in San Francisco, and I would highly recommend the Iyengar Yoga Institute at 27th and Taraval (http://www.iyisf.org/)...You might also want to check out Manuso Manos.

Thanks for the recommendations, Z. Although it's suddenly developed that I'll be moving away from SF in a few months, I still plan to visit around in the meantime to get a sense of what the different approaches are like, so I'll try to check these out. Several people I've talked to have recommended Iyengar; I gather it's generally taught with a lot of attention to specific postural details, making it a good starting point.

And thanks chris23 for going into so much detail. Like I said just above, it turns out I'm leaving town soon, so I won't be jumping into anything at the moment. However, one of my push-hands partners has also gotten interested in Bujinkan, and has already visited a local class. He was sufficiently impressed that he plans to visit again soon, and I'm thinking I'll probably go along just to get a general sense of the style and so on. I don't suppose you know offhand if there are any respectable Bujinkan schools in or around Portland, Oregon?

ah yes. i've been telling myself for the past two weeks that i am going to start working out again. whenever i am not physically active, i begin to slip into a "funk" of sorts. i began training in moo mu kwan, a style of tae kwon do, several years ago. my intense study of the martial arts opened me up to the spiritual aspects of life. the physical combat was a metaphor for the internal conflict, the search for balance. from there i went on to dabble in brazilian ju jitsu, muy thai kickboxing, tai chi and shaolin kempo. once i find fucking job, i plan on practicing aikido, the lazy man's martial art!

Interestingly enough, anIron Crotch Kungfu-Qigong Master has just come over from China and is now teaching in the office next door to us. A side perk is that we now have morning work out... only 10-15 minutes long, but the Qigong exersizes are Sooo intense I've been sore all week.

errrrr...not that I've been traing IRON Crotch or anything!

Chris - as Sapient says, thanks for going into so much detail. Hopefully seeing so many styles on this thread will stop me developing the same chauvanism that I had initially with my magick. And hopefully, in a year or two, I'll be ale to write as convincingly about Hsing I!

(Threadrot: Weird - I've been to Santa Cruz and to Portland /end threadrot)

Jealous - my tai chi sifu is teaching a week-long Hsing I workshop in a couple months, but it's out of my price range.
