The Strobe

I'll grant that Nate and Brenda are a bit too much sometimes.

But I don't think it's fair to say Nate basically killed his wife by not liking her. He was on his way to killing their marriage, sure - it was becoming clear it wasn't quite working. But her death is pretty much open verdict, so assuming that Nate's neglect led to Lisa's suicide isn't really very fair. Because it might not have been suicide.

That said, basic error re: the ashes fuckup.

Dude, if you fancy somebody else and then your wife dies, you have killed her. Scientific TV fact.

Agree that Nate didn't kill Lisa by not loving her or even liking her much, but I think the important thing is that Nate probably thinks he did - in that sense Brenda's fantasy sequence imagining Nate venting his emotions was accurate. He wanted Lisa gone, and the universe obliged.

Billy and Claire never got around to teh sex last time, did they? Regardless, I do agree that Billy is still trouble(d), and will not be good for Claire - who, with her increasing love of drugs, may remind him of Brenda a little too much...

I mainly find Claire's university experiences very real, rather than preferring her one way or another - she's having that experience of becoming one of the 'cool' arty kids having been one of the shunned outsider kids at school, which is a cliche because it happens all the time. I cringe at a lot of it, I worry, but I also laugh and smile because it's so true. And I hope that it will pass as these phases need to...

Ha - okay, so re: Haus' last post, I think we should ask: was Nate's guilt over Lisa's death increased greatly by the fact that at the start of Season 3, his dead dad explained to him that he can choose our own reality, ie. if you will it, it will happen?

She thinks she's more creative, but she always seems more stunted to me.

Well, that's exactly the point.

Trust me, all of the stuff Claire is going through is very realistic.

I can't remember which episode in Season 4 it is - I know that you've already passed it, so it's not a spoiler - but there's a bit with Nate having a dream sequence with Nathanial, and Nathanial is carving meat and asks him if he wants the "end piece." This is an echo of the first episode of season 3, when the same thing happens in the alternate universe world where Nathanial never marries Ruth. I get the feeling that they are intentionally bringing this up over and over and I have a hunch that it will play into the final episode - "who wants the end piece?" being a homonym for "who wants the end peace?" Or maybe not.

Is the next series really the last one?

The Strobe
14:22 / 08.11.04
Yes.

This is without doubt a good thing. There's a lot of threads that are coming nicely to a close as it is, and one more season would tidy it up well. Good sense to go at the right time, I think.

(Also, any of the UKers want to discuss that ending? Not even you, Fly?)

I want you all to discuss it because - FUCKING ARGH - I missed it. I know what happens, from the HBO site, but it's pretty dissapointing to have not caught this one.

*sets alarm for the Sopranos later*

That makes sense. I read a few months ago that it was going to be two more seasons, and I thought "I wonder how they are going to fill up all that time...," because it seems like everything is being set up for a resolution at the end of the fourth season. I'm glad and excited - season four ends at an exciting place, and I'm looking forward to seeing how everything ends up, especially with Claire and George.

I really don't want to see Claire and George in bed together. Maybe I'll skip the next series after all.

Mind boggling finale I thought. Nate seems to do what he thinks is the right thing after some tragic revelation. But what's really so different from before? Suddenly he wants to marry Brenda and have her have his child after realising what a terrible family background Lisa had. Where's the logic?

As awful as everything with Lisa and Holt was, it finally gave Nate some closure and clarity on the Lisa situation. I think that he wanted stability, but also to do well by Brenda to make up for how badly everything went with Lisa. Holt's revelation and suicide was a shock to the system that allowed him to make the decision to stop dicking around and make a choice. I'm not sure if it's the best choice, but I don't think that it's a bad one. Brenda and Nate are both terribly flawed people, but they work together. I think that Nate is recognizing how special their relationship is, and how he doesn't have as much of a chance for happiness with anyone else.

I missed the last episode- no one happened to tape it?

And if they did, can we share?

How did Holt commit suicide? I'm a bit uncertain about how all of that stuff played out.

I am deeply sorry that I gave that plot point away to you two - I figured that you'd all seen it by now. It's really unfortunate, because it's a genuinely surprising moment which um, won't be a surprise anymore. Seriously, kick me the next time you see me. I'll understand.

I've got the last episode still, although a little bit fuzzy, and I won't be in London until a few weeks time. If you don't find someone else who is closer, let me know.
