London Picnic in the Park 04 Mk II

It was the general concensus in Brockwell Park that there was a woeful lack of picnics held last year. In order that we don't make the same mistakes again this summer, how about we have some more.

We could have a Londinium Parks Tour.

As a suggestion, how about Primrose Hill June 27th?

Not to worry if you can't make it, we can have plenty more picnics all summer long and at a different park each time.

Heliophobics will be catered for.

No good for me as I suspect I may be down in Brighton, but in general terms, yay for picnics! They are the new 'sitting in a dark pub breathing second-hand smoke'.

Would like to make it to one, that dates out for me but maybe something near the end of July? I was actually thinking about inviting people round to the newly cleaned up (but still a mess) garden, lots of beer, loud music etc.

Primrose Hill is Fine, but I always prefer Hyde Park for its massive size and variety - it offers so much...

There is the entire summer in which to have a Hyde Park picnic.

A Bear Garden! (boom, tish, etc.)

Yeah, more parky-parky goodness, please.

Not sure why I mentioned that here actually, my garden isn't that large, not since I had to give up the manor...

How about that Heath place, went there once and it was really nice -probably a bit far though....

Primrose Hill would be good...I'd love to come as I failed to make the one yesterday (and it's a fifteen minute walk from my flat, so no excuse)

Hampstead Heath would also be lovely another time too....then there are the ponds to go for a dip in for those so inclined...might want to watch where we sit, otherwise come later in the day it'd more more than just food and drink on offer to some....hmmm on second thoughts that could be quite entertaining...cruising as a spectator sport?

Well I was going to suggest a picnic in the Hill Garden (one of the formal gardens that's connected to the Heath) one weekend if anyone fancies it? It's pretty North but it is a perfect barbelith setting.

Is that the one with the flamingos? I bet you're trying to lure us to them, you evil trixtress.

No animals at all but it does have a pergola and it's hilly. You'll love it, bring a camera.

Fantastic. Wherever this one is held it seems that there is a high likelyhood of some kind of cream tea being organised.

Woo Hoo

Yikes. Scones. I never thought of that but it's perfect.

It's been FOUR YEARS since the first Lith picnic. In honour of that occasion, I would like to suggest returning to St Dunstans-in-the-East and seeing if we could break the rest of the byelaws....

And if the weather turns shite there's a massive and empty Wetherspoons within walking distance (I know, I know, but at least they're cheap, and it's off the beaten track enough that we should manage to avoid any annoying people, unless they read this thread, that is.... )

Ooh! Ooh! Or Holland Park! Which has peacocks! And bunnies! And is very pleasant....

Which has peacocks

Do people on this board have a fetish for flagrant birds that I have somehow missed. I fear my suit will be revoked if I don't immediately develop an unhealthy interest in cockatiels or birds of paradise.

That said, breaking by-laws sounds like a very suitable quarternal event to go with a cream tea.

I very much enjoyed the Brockwell Park picnic except for the following fact:

I got so roaringly drunk that I fell through my sister's glass door that evening, cut my hand open, had to go to hospital, they discovered I'd also cut a tendon and I had to wait until Friday to have a general anaesthetic operation to sew the whole sorry mess up.

I blame Barbelith entirely for this of course because obviously I should not have to be responsible for controlling my own drinking, and anyway if everyone hadn't been so nice I wouldn't have been so excited.

I do of course expect lots of sympathy and huggles now, especially because it's my left hand, and I am left handed. Hence the slowness of this typing. Not that you can see how long it's taken me, obviously.

But believe me, it's a long time.

More champers anyone?

Yes please! I'll try to make it, seeing as I've been very antisocial since my computer ran away. I think this calls for not only strawberries and champagne, but many mini-milks.

For a special price I can control drinking. Really! It's true though it turns out it's a long term venture.

Yep st dunstans is great in the sun but pretty much everything, including drinking and engaging in conversation on any topic whatsoever, is against the by-laws there. Which is unfortunate cos the fountain at the centre of the ruined church makes a perfect wine cooler...

I say we go for it: Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole of the Bye-Law.

No good for me as I suspect I may be down in Brighton

You're barred from all future picnics anyway, pukemonster.

Oh and I'm fine with peacocks, so that's okay.

I'm on for St Dunstans. I might well contribute to the supplies of champagne and strawberries this time round I think, as it looked like much more fun than the meagre lager and crisps I conjured up last time round. I also might try to not to smoke so much as to be entirely incapable of conversation, with anyone, at all, all evening - as per the other week.

Have we got a date for this sorted out yet?

Incidentally, does anyone know anything about the psychogeography of St Dunstans in the East. It crops up in volume one of the Invisibles, but I've never come across a source for that outside of the comic. Presumably George Morrison was referencing something, as its a fairly obscure location to just throw into the narrative otherwise. St Dunstans in the West, off Fleet Street, has got more psychogeographical stuff written about it because of the Gog and Magog statues. (Not so good a location for a picnic though). But St Dunstans East has always puzzled me. Not really an obvious London psychogeographical landmark. Anyone able to shed any light?

I have managed to get myself roped into Gaudy dinner, so I might not be in a fit state to picnic (or do anything else other than groan &c.) on Sunday... though if it happens I will do my possible...

The weather is looking quite unlikely for this weekend anyway so next weekend would be a better option.

As an aside, if anyone's free on Sunday evening we could all meet up in a pub and send snide text to the soakees of Glastonbury.
