gale, you rock. "Fearforall.com"* doesn't quite fit what I'm looking for, but it's just too damn cool for someone not to go and register it right now!

Okay, nevermind, it has been registered. Fearforall.org, anybody??

*yeah, I know, it would be "http://www.fearforall.thisplagueofdreaming.net", but it looks cool all by itself.

Oh, and FWIW, here's my Freewill Astrology Horoscope today:

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): "I'm not afraid of snakes or spiders," says Gemini actress Nicole Kidman, "just butterflies." According to my astrological analysis, that could be an apt motto for many of you Geminis in the coming weeks. You'll probably love your playful wrestles with serpent-like people and enjoy your shadow dances with web-weavers.
You'll thrive in the wake of intense emotions and enigmatic twists of fate. On the other hand, you'll be in danger of losing your focus during airy encounters with delicate creatures; you'll have to be vigilant to avoid getting thrown off course by pretty ephemera and lightweight pleasures.

Sounds good to me. Serpent-like people please line up on the left, web-weavers on the right. Delicate creatures, this is your last chance to sign up to be haunted. All others, please extinguish your pretty ephemera and set your lightweight pleasures to "vibrate" before entering the Twilight Mystery Theatre. Roderick, your usher, will seat you now.

Need I mention that this thread is, oddly enough, a Gemini?

I'm just having fun, now.

It seems that my long-standing ambition to acquire some of Vincent Price's graveyard dirt will never be realized - he was cremated, and his ashes scattered along the Pacific coast.

There's still Bela, however...

We are also a Gemini, L. Is there something peculiarly Gemini-esque about Halloween? I'd think it would be a Libra holiday...

My hopes of spending Halloween in New Orleans seem to have been dashed by monetary concerns, so I'm back to square one on my plans. I'd had so many lovely ideas, too.

A little experience from a few nights ago that might be worth sharing:

I needed to break in a pair of old shoes that had gotten tight, so I went for a walk. Being me, of course, it couldn’t just be a walk, so I made a bit of a production out of it. On went the flappy black trenchcoat, on went the Pumpkin King anointing oil (I tend to anoint in two superimposed pents, one and two horns “exalted,” respectively – not entirely sure why). I addressed Jack as I stepped out the door (UKOMA PEFIGU NOSA LEHITU ROBA), and went on my way.

I live on a long and occasionally unlit street with a lot of traffic. This becomes relevant later. I was also in a very heightened mood from the oil and the intention, and things were starting to feel very significant, if you know what I mean. There were elements of drift playing in.

As I approached the lonely little gas station (“Cinderella’s”), I decided it was time to pick up some candy for an offering. I eventually settled on a bag of sour balls (“2 for $1 or 59 cents each”), and took out the three orange ones for Jack.

I walked further on, this time hearing more than once footfalls behind me when there was no one there. I reached a darker-than-usual spot along the road and stopped (missing by a single step trodding on the carcass of a skunk, as luck would have it), and waited for a couple minutes for a lull in traffic (busy street, remember?). Finally, I called to the Pumpkin King again and formally offered the candies to him (I left them on the guardrail post by the roadside).

When I turned back to walk home the way I had come, there were no cars. None. Looking up and down the road I could have been the only living person on the Earth (and, indeed, that’s exactly how I felt for a moment). It was far eerier than I would have expected. As I walked past the gas station (along the still-deserted street – remember that only minutes before I had to stand and wait for a break in traffic), all the outside lights switched off, leaving me on a very dark and lonely stretch of road. The wind had picked up a little by now, too, and I was definitely feeling the familiar hand of Jack. I loved it, of course, and I know he knew it. It seems that the offering was accepted.

Now, to help kickstart things for the looming month, I’m going to repost my “ideas/to-do” list from last year. Many of these things I didn’t get around to, or didn’t explore fully, and I welcome (nay, implore) you all to try out anything that interests you or add more ideas to the list. Here it is:

Time to make a Halloween To-Do List. I'm just brainstorming for myself, but if any of the ideas sound interesting, run with it (and let us know what happens).

- further, deeper invokation of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King.
- more practice raising the Pillar of Bats ('til it's second nature).
- Four Monsters meditations:
- tidal metamorphosis meditation for the Wolfman
- buried alive meditation for the Mummy (neither dead nor alive, waiting to be unearthed
- "cosmic fire" meditation for Frankenstein's Monster (as revealed in Son of Frankenstein, the Monster was animated by cosmic rays that actually made him, not an undead monster, but an entirely new, living immortal being).
- "blood thirst" meditation for Dracula.
(The point of the four meditations is to build a stronger awareness of the natures of the Cardinal Monsters, in order to be able to better manifest their presence in the Banishing ritual.)
- a lot more raw energy work, to help fuel the other workings.
- preliminary werewolf exercises and visualizations
- I'm thinking about invoking the spirit of Vincent Price for the festivities on Halloween night - charming and urbane, with a macabre wit.
- As previously noted, charge and powder Autumn leaves for later use.
- Also, charge orange and black candles with Halloween energy, for use elsewhen in the year ('cos everyday is Halloween).
- I need to visit the friendly dead at my cemetery (one of my youthful haunts in town), possibly with offerings.

We can add to this some explorations of haunting, of course. Any thoughts on what form those might take?

I also want to go ahead with the Thousand-Times Great Grandmere working I talked about last year, though with a slightly different perspective (informed by my somewhat greater understanding/appreciation of ancestor veneration).

So, what’s up?

Muhuhahahahahahahaaaa! I just took part in a day- (and night-)long festival on a nearby island. My part was a zombie - it was a promotion stunt for an upcoming play featuring zombies and pop-voodoo. The guy in charge, though, was all set to integrate this bit with the rest of the event's performances and storylines.
He took on the "Mad Doctor" character, titled Baron Samedi. Not much in the way of acknowledgement toward said Baron, but wait. Twelve or thirteen of us were his accompanying zombies.
We spent a good two hours doing makeup, including a few near-professionals in the mix. I also made an outfit for the performance - a thrift-store suit and shirt torn to shreds, burnt, dirt-covered, bloodstained. The makeup featured oatmeal, liquid latex, of course lots of blood and paint.
Heading out the door for the making-up, I quietly dedicated the event to the Pumpkin King .

And we (the group of us, but my friend Greg and I in particular) stayed in character ALL DAY. Staggering, mumbling, drooling, yelling, fighting with each other and fellow zombies, leering and stalking passers-by (and, of course, promoting the play). Then we joined the central festival's procession, which wound its way back to an old military bunker (an extremely haunted place without all this madness!). There was a social-commentary storyline to the thing, which featured wonderfully weird wood sprites and a gorgeous scene of an earth-goddess figure - a nude woman covered in white flour or power, creating a spiral on the earth, completely decked out....repeating it, it may sound cheezy, but TRUST ME that it was an extraordinarily powerful sight.

This was one of the greatest things ever, in my tunnel at least. The zombie persona fit like a glove - lots of fun and an elimination of all those pesky social barriers. There was a short distance to any "lower", and that would've involved public exposure or soiling myself. It was THAT GOOD.
Even as we headed off-island by "the last of the fading light" there was the power and crackle lingering on our heels. It's amazing what you can stir up simply by doing it...

And, Bush Loses, your story is a great one. Reminds me of lots of old introspective walks I used to take, all of which were (unbeknownst at the time) rituals - complete with the long coat, hat, etc. These led to me to talk to trees and shadows and eventually have a tremendous religious experience! I say all this because intuitive drifts as you describe are wonderful and powerful things, and yours sounds beautiful and makes me want to get my ass in gear for such things.

Haunt away!

Is anyone doing anything specific to welcom the hallowed month of October?

There will indeed be a new thread tomorrow.

You were talking about poppets recently, Sekhmet? Well, I've just started thinking about a way to use "planted" poppets to create localized haunting effects. I'm not entirely sure how to go about doing this... I don't think I want to create some kind of servitor to inhabit the area - more like time-released spells. I suppose, actually, that I could use any small object for this, but poppets just seem appropriate.

The idea, as it stands in its infancy, is not so much to scare people as give them a tantalizing taste of the uncanny. The moment I describe in the "offering for Jack" thread above is a good example of what I mean. If a network of these poppets can be laid out and set to work over the course of the month, maybe they can be induced to reinforce each other synergistically? And... I'm thinking on my feet here, but maybe they can all be tied to a central ritual object, so they can be activated, deactivated, reactivated, etc. from home (or wherever). This way they can be set to work up through sunrise November 1st, then "retired" and brought back the following year, or on full/dark moons, or individually as desired. Further, they can also act as "beacons" for astral travel or dreamwork.

If I make some, I'll try to post pictures (which will require getting my digital camera fixed, sucksucksuck).

Hmmmm... pumpkin seeds, Spanish moss... pumpkin vine? Maybe. Something to represent eyes... I'll probably end up using Mugwort in some capacity... I'll work something out.

Now, how to tell if they're working? Most obviously, one could send a friend out to the location and see if they can tell when you "activate" the haunting (synchronize watches, etc.). Or, if the poppet is planted along a road, have your friend walk along the road and see if they can feel where the effect is centered. Of course, these methods don't tell how well they work on people without the benefit of being primed.... Ideas?

I've got some other ideas about Halloween dreamwork and the like, but I'm hesitant to develop them further, because of possible ethical problems.

I'm also all about enchanting candy to give out on Halloween (as suggested by...was it Gypsy Lantern? in last year's thread). The enchantment itself will likely take the form of a blessing, both for the health and well-being of the recipient, but also specifically Jack's blessing for a vibrant and wondrous Halloween. I may add on something a bit more subversive, too, but that will require some more thought.

Further along in my personal thoughts about haunting/spirits of the dead/ancestors/etc. I'm thinking about what possible differences there may be between graveyard dirt taken from a particular grave (which, when properly bought, allows you to work with the spirit of the person buried there) and graveyard dirt taken from elsewhere in the graveyard - particularly from a crossroads within the graveyard itself. While the first is well-established in use, and has some pretty heavy properties and is tied to a specific spirit, I wonder if the non-grave graveyard dirt can capture and impart that overall "spirit" (in quotes to differentiate from the spirit of a dead person - I'm talking more about a genius loci of the graveyard) that graveyards and cemetaries seem to have, and which is more than simply the sum of all spirits housed therein. You know what I'm talking about, surely? The idea needs more working out, but it has a good feel to it. Again, input?

Gotta run.

Haunt hard, haunt well. And don't get caught!

I have a bag of candy corn that I will infuse with the spirit of the season and bring in to work tomorrow. I love candy corn!

I have a question regarding graveyard dirt. Across the street from where I live is quite probably the spookiest cemetary around. It's small, and the entrance is a plain wooden arch with "I shall dwell in the house of the lord forever" painted on it. All of the graves are marked only with blank stones. I did some checking around, and found that they are the graves of indigent patients from the mental institution down the road (this is really not as weird as it sounds, honest!)

Anyway, the cemetary used to be in terrible condition, overgrown, with no markers of any sort on some of the graves. Others had white sticks in the ground that were broken or peeling. Now it is mowed regularly, and someone cared enough to put down stone markers. Any ideas on graveyard dirt from this place? I was thinking of leaving something (flowers, shells, rocks) as an offering to these forgotten people. Or should I let be?

gale, honestly, I would probably leave individual graves alone unless what I want to do seems particularly relevant (say, cursing or binding an abusive doctor or orderly). Then again, if what you are looking for is more of a relationship with the spirits, then perhaps some gifts would be welcome - be aware, however, that the spirits may not be the most sociable (these are likely people who died in the institution with no family to claim them, and they may harbor some bitterness. On the other hand, they may be especially eager for a little attention - watch out for lonely spirits following you home!).

And, finally, if there is a genius loci of the graveyard itself (beyond the individuals buried therein), you may be able to contact that entity distinctly from the spirits of the dead.

For some more information on graveyard dirt, take a look here. Generally speaking, it's nothing to use too lightly. My own experience of graveyards, however, suggests that there are other forces besides just the dead that can be encountered and worked with, and I'm starting to try to work around the fringe of the traditional methods to explore that idea.

Meanwhile, gale, if you have a digital camera or something I would love to see that graveyard, especially the gate.

Oooh, super spooky...

Lepidopteran, I love the poppet haunting idea... and designing them would be so much fun! Maybe they could be made in Halloween shapes, like little pumpkins or ghosts or black cats... If you don't use that idea, I'm certainly going to...

I have gigantic monster pumpkin vines in my garden, and I've been hoping they'll produce fruit before Halloween - they're blooming like crazy, but I haven't seen any gourds forming yet. I think the weather's been too warm, but it's cooling off now... If the pumpkins produce the way the squash did this year, I'll be swimming in pumpkins. I'll have to come up with something to do with them.

I keep pondering the fact that I have a dead black cat buried behind my house, too... I feel like I need to do something to include her, but I'm not sure what... (*muses*)

I think I am going to spend the evening tonight meditating on Halloween and Haunting, and hope that some good ideas float into my mind. I'd like to make some real contributions to the new thread and to the Haunting Project.

Where to begin? On Mabon I held several small, personal rituals and spent a lot of time meditating on the change of season. In one such ritual I dedicated all my (art-writing-etc)work for this coming year to the various spirits in my life right now, and allowing their Power and the Mystery from which they radiate to express itself through that work.
This is two-fold: one, I'm REALLYREALLYREALLY busy at the moment and living in a small temporary apartment. "Trad magic" is thus a bit difficult. Two, the work I'm doing GENUINELY relates to said spirits and all my magical being. So the dedication is both practical and necessary.

My roommate, who works on a farm, traded one day's pay for all the pumpkins and cornstalks she could fit in her car. Our temp-apt, consequently, looks VERY festive indeed.

Got the Autumn alter all set up, complete with a one-of-a-kind stumbled-upon Pumpkin King figure. He has, of course, a big pumpkin head with wide eyes and an eerie grin; a witch's hat with lichen tangled around it; orange shirt, bat cravat, black cape draped around his shoulders (bat-wing style), green-brown velvet breeches and murky striped tights. On the base are gourds and more lichen. I have trouble looking him in the eye.

The work referred to above is a series of performance/installation works related to the Kabbalah, personal symbology, and various other nut-ball interests o' mine. The first deals with Malkuth and Yesod - the intent being to not (only? even?) represent these but to invoke their presences for both myself and the audience alike. It will be on the weekend before Halloween (due to P.I.T.A. school scheduling).
I identify Malkuth (at least for the simplified sake of these performances) with "base material", a Lovecraftian sort of fecund goo. Fun fun fun! And Yesod becomes the dreamscape "Sleepy Hollow" - where it is always late Autumn, chilly, slighty overcast. Candlelight, the smell of decaying leaves, the light wind. It's going to be tremendous fun and challenge making these two happen and, of course, perfect for our season. There will be "formal" ritual elements involved (use of a circle, candle arrangements) and a lot of informal or more personal invocatory bits. All devoted to the Autumnal King and Queen, and Hermes/The Trickster - crossing boundaries, walking the road at midnight. (In previous threads, didn't we discuss Halloween as black and orange = death and trickster?)

I put on my first performance piece Monday night - photos soon! - and it wound up being a superbly spooky event. It opened with a projection of Papa Legba's vever and a candlelight invocation of said trickster. Through the rest of the piece, which was spooky in tone already, the invocatory candle turned my shadow into SOMETHING...and, about halfway through the performance, it "clicked." You know what I mean - the "turn-on" feeling when you know an entity or presence or "vibe" is there.

HAUNTED OCTOBER, EVERYBODY! It's finally begun.
I'm going to head out and POTUS the town tonight - get that working - and then dedicate/charge a bunch of candy corn for the season. Maybe make a necklace out of it, as last year, or maybe distribute this batch to friends and acquaintances and make a necklace later.

"I'm the...LATE NIGHT AIR! Exhilarating!
With...you...in the darkness, waiting..."
