for the true cigar smoker, both lighters (petrol or gas) and matches are out. What one should do is use a wooden taper. Light that then hold it close to the cigar. Never place the end of the cigar into the flame (of anything if you can't be bothered) and inhale the flame to the cigar. Turning it slowly as you do so you get an even light. Make sure it if fully lit (using more than one lighting if need be) and slowly enjoy. If you don't use a taper matches are better then lighters, and only then the filmsy ones from a book rather then the wooden safety matches (something about the chemicals on them)
Oh and always keep a long ash on your cigar. No need to be constantly flicking. If it's a good quality cigar you can get at least an couple of centimetres of ash on the end.
Whether you smoke it with abandon (A Band On, the little cuff towards the base) or not is entirely up to you nowadays. Before the mid-90's this practise was frowned upon (which is silly as the purpose of the band was so you could smoke a cigar wearing gloves and not get the tabacco smell/stain on them). |
