This issue has, regrettably, not gone away. I have moved for these to be deleted as threadrot in their original context, but Flyboy, reacting to a wave of Barbelove for Lord Morgue, on account of the time and effort he has dedicated to questions about Star Wars, his mood affected by having had to delete a "comedy" post Morgue made in a Head Shop thread about sexual assault:
Yeah, Lord Morgue's just fucking hilarious, isn't he? What with the constant mindless thread-rotting and the jokes about goosing in a thread discussing attitudes to sexual assault, which moderators then have to spend time deleting - what a riot!
This set off a bit of a kerfuffle, the relevant bits of my contribution to which I will place here:
I think Morgue is probably one of those "split" issues for Barbelith. If you want to talk about the minutiae of certain major-grossing 80s sci-fi film franchises or comic books from the Timely era to contempo hentai, he's an absolute godsend. If you want to discuss anything else without him bouncing up and seeking attention with a single-minded pointlessness that would make Gary Coleman weep - not so much. I maintain that he would be far happier on Fade to Black. In fact, Fade to Black appears to be designed for him - but whaddayagonnado?
Now, there is in fact already a thread about Lord Morgue's inability to stop himself from posting to the standards of the board he moderates elsewhere. That topic is here. He appears to have confessed therein that he is not mentally competent to judge the worth of his contributions, and has asked us to act as his conscience by deleting his posts if we feel that they are self-advertising drivel. That seems fair, although I had hoped that he would have smartened up by now. In the meantime, his depth of knowledge about Star Wars, comics and online gaming is no doubt a vital resource, and one worth the hassle of cleaning up the odd turd on the living room carpet, no? If you have trouble working out whether a post is threadrotting or not, please look carefully at the title and summary of the thread, read the thread so far and, if still confused, wait to see if the post is deleted before replying to it to the exclusion of the rest of the thread so far.
This seems to cover it. Morgue, despite his best efforts, tends to leave little puddles around the place, like the sexual assault thread, here, here, here, and so on... Hopefully he will get the hang of how the board works, rather than trying to turn it into his other board, at some point, or failing that realise that Fade to Black is right over there if he wants a more familiar experience in a slightly different colout, but until then I guess we're just the indulgent owner with the carpet cleaner. |
