After some discussion with the Brumlith crew I’ve decided that the first annual LithStock is in order. Anyone fancy hiring out a campsite for a few days down Devon way for the summer??? I think Devon would be best as it gives the Londoners an excuse to get out of there Dirty City and also not travel too far, along with being ok for the people in Southampton to get to.

Think of all the fun we could have! We could get sound systems! Barbeques! Mushrooms! Nature rambles! And much beer induced vomiting…

I thought I would throw this out here to see what the general opinion was and begin organising venue / date.

Well, would any one be interested???

Pot.

Well, yes. The trouble being that a lot of us are scattered to the four winds. What's central and attractive? And oughtn't this to be in the Gatherings area?

Sounds cool.

We could get the Barefoot Doctor down to do holistic massages.

I thought conversation would be better to ensure everyone gets a peep at it and its gonna take a lot of chatting to organise first...

It's a truly magnificent idea Pot. And wouldn't it be lovely if we all pulled our fingers out of our backsides and actually did it?

What's central and attractive?

Rutland, but it's not nearly as nice as Devon. It's only a little country, anyway, we're lucky. Think of if we were trying to do this stateside...

Hows about a sacred site somewhere? Stone circle, chalk man etc?

I have a tent and like fields, so would like to come along.

In June, there's always the worm-charming championships in Nantwich, Chesire, which is probably far away from where all of us live!

Lithstock. This is the Best. Idea. Ever.

Ideally, we’d need a campsite that doesn’t mind open campfires (because some do, you know). And then ‘Lithers who are in bands can bring their guitars and be sure that their services will be called upon for a singsong. And somewhere not too far from a beach would be good, although I suppose it would be difficult to get very far from a beach in Devon. And anyone who knows of a good spot in Devon for mushroom picking should pipe up. Because that's important.

Shrooms don't pop up until autumn anyway, but you can buy P. Cubensis (fresh) on the nethere and at your local drugs parephenalia shop. Like, legally.

Am in... have accoustic bass-guitar, harmonicas and a decent voice. Love building and tending fires, outdoor cooking etc et al.

I'll probably "bring a packed lunch" rather than foraging locally, nudge... wink if you follow my drift. I'd certainly "swap sandwiches" with anyone who had... err... sarnies to barter.

We gonna do this this year? I vote YES! - even if it ends up just 3 of us camping in somebody's garden. As long as it satisfies Logardiere's Constant, it's a Barbemeet... and an Outdoor Barbemeet that lasts 2 or more nights can qualify as our first UK LithStock.

Then next year will be "the second annual LithStock"... population 7

I *really* like the idea of camping near a sacred site...

And as mushrooms are pretty much legal at the mo I can get a wide variety from local shops, so that side will be sorted.

Now all we need is a decent location, I'll do some googlising a bit later, see what I can dig up

Lithers have ended up meeting in a small town in the south of the czech republic before... this sort of thing is definitely doable, but having said which, it is often hard enough to organize doing somthing in london, let alone something where a degree of travel might be involved...

Nonsense Sleaze you big cynic! If London Barbemeets are so difficult than why do we seem to have one every ten days?

Mix, I have to reject my earlier notion that 3 makes a meet because I sure as hell don't have one everytime I go in to the kitchen. New rules will have to be introduced to the constant.

In addition I won't be there because 1)mushrooms do nothing for me and 2)I hate camping which is a shame because the fantasyland part of my brain thinks this is a fun idea.

Well, I'm well up for it! Are we decided on Devon? In June?
Let's narrow it down a bit... Anyone been to nice place there before? Anyone know of *any* campsites round there.

(also I was thinking that it might be an idea to find one which is fairly accesibly by road and rail otherwise logistics for drivers/ non-drivers might be a prob!)

PS - I can't drive!

June sounds great, all we need to do now is find somewhere thats accessable by public transport and sort out a specific weekend.

It's not all gonna be about the mushrooms by the way, it's an extended meet! I imagine there will be loads of people not takin mushies...

Come along one and all!

It's not Devon I grant you, but I give you:

Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.

It's in Dorset, it's beautiful, nearby there is also Tyneham Village, which is eerily lovely, A 'proper' castle in the form of Lulworth castle, Giant garden chess in a very good pub, Interesting geological goings-on at Stair Hole and the Fossil Forest, it's easy to get to, there's a good campsite and oh, go and look at the lovely, lovely pictures.

And, Anna, please come, it won't be all mushrooms, and camping is fun if you're with the right people. And I will lend you my warm socks if it gets cold.

This is SUCH a good idea!

Bring on the stone circles and druidic craziness.. possibly.

Not to rock the boat, but Pembrokeshire down here in South West Wales has swathes of beautiful countryside, many campsites and, um, fields and beaches and forests and such like, and a relative lack of tourist overcrowding. (But on the minus side, it's pretty much impossible to do anything without a car).

Count me in whereever it ends up being anyway..

I love camping. And I'm a bit camp. And I haven't been camping in years. Also haven't been to a Barb meet in years {which worries me, keeps me awake at night staring at things}. And I play in a band or two that like the idea of playing in places you shouldn't play music. Brighton is lovely this time of year... although I imagine Devon would be better for frightening yocals, if that's your thing... 'look maaaw... circus's in town ogyaaahnn'..

Well, not My house as such.. my mum's house, but, um, yeah theoretically.. I'm sure there are many farmers who could be persuaded to give us a field for the weekend for a few quid..

Olulabelle
22:46 / 26.04.04
Oh lets do it near your Mum's house then Rizla, farmers with fields sounds ideal and I've never been to Wales proper, only Pontiprydd University to see my friend.

(That Welsh spelling is seven shades of wrong I am sure.)

If Rizla's thing doesn't work out - olulabelle's suggestion looks great! The only concern I have is the campsite looks a bit too well organised and family oriented etc. I'm not sure they'd like a load of Barbeloids descending en masse, especialy since it looks like you have to book in advance.

(also - and this is not the first time I've seent his with campsites - they don't accept bookings from all male or all female parties - in other words, gay couples.)

Olulabelle
09:45 / 29.04.04
Do they really not? I am astounded. Big sorry.

What we really need is a place with a nice famer who will let us borrow a field, so Rizla's suggestion is a much better plan in that case.

Axolotl
12:09 / 29.04.04
The "no all male or all female party" policy may not be a homophobe policy, it is often used to prevent stag/hen parties from disrupting the place. I used to work in a hotel that was very gay friendly but that wouldn't let big groups of blokes stay as they'd had too much trouble with stag nights.

Aye - I've seen that too, but country places are more provincial generally. I remember once almost not being allowed in to a place in Cumbria as I was only with me (same sex) mate. The only reason we were eventually "allowed" - and believe me I wasn't too keen but we were miles away from anywhere, was because we were "genuine walkers" or something. Had we driven there and wanted to rent a caravan they would have said no.

That's not the only time it's happened either.

Anyway - so shall we say the weekend of the 3rd/4th July? Potguns? Lula? Anyone?
