quick, tell them about the deep fried mars bars...

Ariadne
12:23 / 20.04.04
They didn't have them when I was a kid - they're pretty much a recent invention and more a joke than anything. Or so I'm told. But there's a hotel in Edinburgh doing a roaring trade in fried chocolate sandwiches for pudding.

YUM. How does the cheese not melt off?

Did I already tell you that there's a place here that does fried twinkies? I haven't tried them, though.

Ariadne
12:37 / 20.04.04
I don't know. It's kind of plasticky cheese that's already gummed to the pizza. I'm not making this sound very attractive, am I? But it's delicious in an evil sort of way.

I didn't know though pizza was so common, I tried it years back but thought that the chippie was just a little strange - I can remember being violently sick not long after.... awww precious memories....

It could be a Lanarkshire phenomenon. Many of the worst things are.

A friend in-the-know has told me that the deep fried pizza is a far scarier proposition that the deep fried Mars Bar, because the pizza base effectively acts as a fat sponge soaking up fat at an alarming rate. Anyway, good luck with the relocation.

The dripping-with-yellow-fat-and-garnished-with-lard pizza is alive and well in Auld Reekie, don't worry. Two more folks to sink a few with on a weekend home, yay! In fact, we'll forget the rest of them in future and just take you and Loomis dancing.

Right time of year to head North. It'll be Summer there soon, for a day and a half in mid August. Take your bikini, A. You know, the little fluffy pink one you lent me for my holidays.

Hey, maybe you could go on Relocation, Relocation, Relocation and get Kirsty and Phil to sell your flat and buy you a new pad in Edinburgh.

But first you'll have to buy a telly so you know what I'm talking about.

Ohmygod and I thought I was the only one who watched that programme (scarily one of the few I actually try to watch).

Good luck, find somewhere pretty!

crikey. I too thought of Relocation... why not? get some free advice on flats! and become famous.

"ariadne and loomis.. a young professional couple, are looking to relocate from london to edinburgh.
"we want to get out of the rat race", comments radiant Scot Ariadne, 47.
"and grow our own tofu on a balcony overlookign the castle. I love the way you brits have so much history, and feel a real affinity for the scots, also downtrodden by the hated english", grins bonza Aussie bloke, Loomis, 35.""

Sorry guys, flat's rented for the year...

But if you want to know anything about newington, I grew up there, so just ask!

Ariadne
07:14 / 22.04.04
Thanks for asking, jefe - we're going up in a couple of weeks and I'm sure we'll find somewhere.

It looks like we might have sold the flat, so who needs 'relocation'? AND we have a scarlet wall, which I believe is 'not on' according to such programmes? I'm sitting waiting for the phone to ring, to see if the guy who came round last night comes through with the dosh.

*indrawn breath*

Ooooh, need to tone down that scarlet wall to a nice neutral cream - which will allow potential buyers to imagine themselves occupying the space. And maybe some seagrass matting. And a mirror. And some (but NOT TOO MANY) candles.

Under current selling-on-television regulations, at least one of you is obliged to remonstrate noisily about how your 'personality' is invested in that scarlet wall and, in stripping it away, you are being psychologically raped.

No, no, you're thinking of Selling Houses not Relocation, Relocation. Kirstie and Phil are nice and only take you to see places (lovely, lovely places). Last night they had nightmare people on the show. Damn, I love that programme.

'Nesh, I'm disappointed in your lack of 'homeTV' nous. shocked and disappointed.

I've only just realised the true significance of this.

Man that place sounds great, can you recommend a good (great) veggie restaurant in London?

Bit of threadrot but I reckon Ariadne and Loomis and the Barbelith veggies (vegans)

Ariadne
14:33 / 22.04.04
Oh yes. I had tea in David Bann's after my interview last week. Yum.

And I had lunch at Hendersons both days, the first day in the Bistro and the second in the Salad Table.

Edinburgh is fab.

Bear, you can get similar food at The Gate in Hammersmith.

Bear: it *is* great. It's one of the best things EVER.

Veggie in london:

The Gate. mmm. worth trekking to hammersmith for, oh yes. glorious food, lovely setting. but sell yr granny beforehand.

Haven't been but hear good things about Carnevale, nr Barbican.

Blah Blah Blah, goldhawk road, is midrange, great quality/nice atmosphere...

Woodlands, 3 or four of these scattered over London, do great South Indian (100% veggie) food.

Raw Deal, near Baker Street, is v.reasonable and yum - more a 'cheap and cheerful' vibe.

Rasa - Stoke Newington/Mayfair. The South Indian choice. 100% veggie, delicious South Indian food

Or... get yr ass down here and try

Troggs

Terre a Terre. Probably the best veggie restaurant in the country.

The George

as well as a zillion smaller veggie cafes/pubs

Ariadne, I'm v.jealous. Which reminds me, we going to Terre a Terre/Troggs before you guys head norf.

Best veggie meal I've had in London so far was at Kastoori's in Tooting High Street. I ordered many authentic Indian dishes of which I'd never heard and was happy as a pig in a pig bordello. Of course, those saddled with unreasonable prejudices about sarf of the river will never know its culinary marvels.

My ideal would be a restaurant with pictures of toksik in his shorts festooning the walls.

Yes, we must bash Ariadne and Loomis many times before they go. I want to watch that boy dance again.

ooh. kastori's rocks. lotsa good indian eatin in Tooting.

(my sis works round the corner from it, it was our 'ladies who lunch' spot for ages.)

bomb the fucking suburbs.

The people in the suburbs are real people too, habibi. But point taken.

We want to be in town to be near work. After living 10 miles out of London and doing the commute every day, I want to walk to work again.

Newington veggie food:

Ann Purna up near the Odeon Cinema on Clerk street has good Indian veggie, as does the Kalpna, also on Clerk Street, which is a bit of an institution...

I think the Odeon is being shut down, which is a right shame, always used to be best Cinema in Edinburgh - huge screen, fake stars on the ceiling, and greek statues on plinths.

So when are we bashing you? I'm with whoever stressed the plural earlier... just cos you're both going at the same time doesn't mean you get to escape with just one pissup between the two of you. A pissup each, to which you both invite the other. That sounds much nicer, doesn't it?

You know I'm right.

Loomis

I bow to your wisdom sir.

We're trying to plan at least one large one on a Saturday, with various minor bashes scattered about. I want to start in the afternoon to make sure I don't accidentally end up sober at closing time. Is that wrong?

Plus that allows people to come and go at different times if they have other stuff on.

but.. but.. have you been to blackhall?

but seriously, you're quite right. really my outburst was only giving a nod to an excellent book which advocates living in deprived urban areas, rather than demonising them.

I want to walk to work again.

ah, the joys of a brisk walk to work throught the meadows. but as someone upthread alluded to, edinburgh is a great cycling city. i commute nine miles a day, in no time at all. quicker than the bus.

wherever you end up in this bittersweet radge of a town, all the best to ye!
