Personally speaking, I try to make sure that female vocalists make it onto as many tracks on my mix CDs/tapes as possible. As I believe that by and large women make some of the best music around, this usually isn't too hard.
And I hate to split hairs over terminology, but the artists you name scarcely seem to be very representative of "poppy or clubby music"... hate to freak you out dude, but, er, aren't Broken Social Scene & the Shins, like, indie bands with, y'know, guitars and awkward male singers and stuff?
I have however sent and recieved mix CDs via Barbelith featuring 3 out of 4 of those bands if memory serves.
In fact, the majority of mixes I've recieved via Barbelith over the years have been utterly astonishing and generally far more interesting and wide-ranging than the music that tends to be discussed on this forum these days.. which is odd.
I probably owe the discovery of dozens of artists/bands I now count among my favourites to Barbelith mix trading - and that's not even counting all the complete albums and artist-specific mixes people have sent my over the years out of the kindness of their hearts.
I could run through a list of heroes to be applauded, but I'm sure they all know who they are. |
