Sock Monkey, 'JOYCORE

Oh YES. Just read a chunk of it this afternoon. JOYJOYJOYCORE.

Also second the flaming carrot rec. tho this maybe because I associate it with a very joycore 5-year-old who loves it.

Has anyone mentioned Hewligan's Haircut?

J-O-Y-C-O-R-E.

Early Nemesis. Reeeealy early, like before Mills and O'Neill even had the whole alien crusade idea. All those silly details and Kenny Everett cameos. Hoo. and HA.

The Prince of All Lies

I don't know why no one's suggested Preacher.. one of my all time favorites. It has supernatural stuff, really good jokes, and a gun-toting texas preacher...what else could you ask for? A drunken irish vampire?
PS: Transmet is a cool initiation book for people interested in politics or journalism.

Preacher
Grant Morrisons super-hero and non-super-hero stuff
Bendis Spider-man
Millar Ultimates
Brubakers Gotham Central ( law and order with super-heros how can you go wrong ...)
and with the new comics trade organisation with a department for advertising i see all comic sales going up a least a little bit

Preacher is a bit too angsty for Joycore.
Gotham Central? Gritty crime drama is not Joycore.
Agree on Ultimate Spiderman.

Yes, Bengalady, I've read Hewligan's Haircut. It is Joycore extreme.
Also, to reiterate, Dr & Quinch, along with a shit-load of old 2000AD (ditto on early Nemesis).

I dinna think Preacher is angsty.

No.

Spaniel
11:42 / 03.04.04
All that Jesse-Cassidy-Tulip incestuous love-triangle stuff, not angsty? All those long (oh, so long) speeches on men and women and life?

All that shit with Jesse's upbringing, where he was beaten and he just wanted his Dad, and he still wants his Dad, and don't we all want our Dads...?

And let's not start on the whole "where's god got to?" thingummy.

Spaniel

ghost world

Good does not equal Joycore.

The Falcon
12:58 / 03.04.04
Hum. I just thought it was a laugh.

It is mostly, but aye. Right enough.

Spaniel
14:35 / 03.04.04
Oh, it's a laugh. But a laugh ain't necessarily Joycore.

The Art Spiegelman "Jack Cole and Plastic Man" (lotta capitals, there...) is pure joycore right up to the point where, well, y'know, boom. I would recommend. Especially for the SMELL it gives off. It's been a long time since the aroma of cheap pulp crossed my sinuses.

...and the Taschen collection of Little Nemo. Occasionally racist, but so surreally beautiful it's hard to criticise.

Joycore Racism!

Bastard Tweed

All right, Celebrity! Accidental joycore from the off-chance of being the first message on a new page. Kudos!

All very good comics, but not shiny and happy. I want the comics equivalent of a meerkat!

fao anyone in the UK

joycore? go to whsmiths or other decent ish newsagent, and down on the little comics bit, tucked away in the corner, find 'avengers unlimited' it's US comic size, not proper size, but good and fat. turn to first page. observe the vision, red face, green scalp, white polo-neck, playing chess on his own. see quiksilver in the background, just loungin. and watch the scarlet witch as she stands just so, ready for the shopping trip that only mutant girls can do. it is very, very, very joycore. i promise you a smile, all you have to do is go to the shop and look. marvel uk reprints, fucking brilliant at the mo - whole generation of fans instantly au fait with miller, steranko, adams, trimpe and kirby. lucky little bastiches.

The Falcon

Top Ten by Alan Moore. Even without understanding all the comic references, the amount of fun and character development he fits in for the number of characters in such a short amount of time is great.

Spirit. I know it is very noir, but it is also fun.

EC's horror stuff, Tales from the Crypt, etc. Let's be honest, it wasn't that scary, and some of it is hilarious, even if that is not the intention.

I'll second Top 10; sophisticate-Joycore. I understand a new edition is being released soon, new cover, etc.--though it wasn't clear from the description I read, I'm hoping it's the complete 12 issues in a single volume.

Perfect Tommy

I can't remember—did DC 1,000,000 have lots of boring geeky continuity crap? 'Cause if it didn't, I think that (as mentioned a few threads down) Super-lympics, an 800-millennium love story, and Superman PUNCHING THROUGH TIME is pretty joycore.

Haus of Mystery
07:35 / 23.04.04
I second that emotion, baby.

Spaniel
09:07 / 23.04.04
The Legion of Executive Familiars fighting a sun...

'Sright.

And, yeah, I reckon EC comics could be considered joycore.

yeh yeh whatevah whatevah

who's been to the newsagents to look at the avengers splash page? go on! go! then report back here and say how nice it made you feel. it's brilliant. buy the ish if you want (kree-skrull war kicks off, lots of fun) scan up a pic for us all to see. i love it so much. the splash page of the last issue was a winner 'nall, wonderman and beast walking drunk down the road at dawn, propping each other up and singing before flying and leaping to battle against red ronin, a huge samurai-robot. it's all brilliant. i love it so much.

Spaniel
10:48 / 23.04.04
It really does sound brilliant. I'm going to head off to Wiffsmith on my lunch hour.

Yes to Plastic Man, yes to vintage Fantastic Four, yes to Beanworld and Tank Girl. They bring the joy.

Flaming Carrot, yes. Yes! Mr. Death drinks strychnine! Woot!

And BONE! YES!

Sock Monkey is a gem in my heart, but it's pretty freakin' horrific -- lobotomized blue jays, children's houses burning down....

But what of Zot!?

Yes, now out of print (I think), but delightfully... a full novel-sized story online! The art's not quite as good (and that image up there is *squashed*, so don't judge by that).

The original is gorgeous, goofy, and unabashed.

so i got the x-statix/avengers on saturday. wow. any of the panel's with hawkeye in would have been worth the money alone. as it was this ish, last in the shop, was utterly priceless.

and that's something I picked up on the block

also while we're back on the topic of the joy, hellboy if it hasn't been mentioned already, and even if it has. it's buffy meets judge dredd - what could be better?

The Natural Way
12:51 / 14.07.04
Have I mentioned Gon yet?

Actually, I think DKReturns is pretty joyous. It's big and exciting and has massive a pay-off. The first comic blockbuster.

Groo
