National Demonstration Saturday 20th March 2004

The Muslim Association of Britain will be jointly organising a national demonstration on the 20th of March 2004, along with Stop The War Coalition and CND, to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the war on Iraq.

There can be little doubt that over the past year, events and facts have proven the argument proposed by the Anti-War movement in Britain to be absolutely correct, and all the claims made by the Government and the warmongers to be false and untrue. Had the consequences not been so tragic and desperately inhumane, we would have been excused for gloating.

As a result, we have witnessed an unprecedented decline in public confidence in the Government and are hearing demands from all corners for a public enquiry to be set up to investigate all the circumstances that lead to the decision to take the country to war against a people whom now exist under unbearably unstable and insecure conditions. The Coalition forces' continued reminders that they managed to get rid of
Saddam Hussein, clearly serves as no more than a fig-leaf in light of the tragic circumstances.

The Palestinians whom, lest we forget, were promised by Tony Blair and George W. Bush a just resolution to their plight and a just state, as soon as the war on Iraq was over and Saddam Hussein was toppled, are nowhere near their life-long dream, and are now facing a new Israeli crime in the shape of a Wall which can only be seen as a further confirmation of the racist and Apartheid nature of the Israeli government.

In the midst of all this, the people of our country have stood tall and have spoken loudly and proudly for justice, freedom and humanity, and have defied all the synics who forecasted a decline of the people's movement following the fall of Baghdad.

The 20th of March will always be a date held in infamy.

I would have to bring my mother, in town for the long weekend. I sound like Ronnie Corbett, don't I?

I know my better 3/4 is going with Frankie in tow so I'll be watching this to see if there are any plans in the making. I recommend a gathering post-march at The Angel, St Giles High Street. Of course, Kraftwerk is later that evening in Brixton and the Kraftwerk after party too.

Gingerbop- Assuming you're not taking the piss, head for Marble Arch on the Central Line, Hype Park exit clearly marked. Annoyingly I may now be booked for something else that afternoon, we shall see.

secret- Tht's the spirit! Nothing like some healthy optimism! It's hardly up there with refusing to move to the back of the bus but at least it's something.

At the very least, the marches have forced the powers-that-be to acknowledge some issues on the anti-war front. Personally I feel that to NOT march or protest against something that my government is doing that i disagree with is a complicit agreement. And I disagree with this war, so I'm go be there.

See ya saturday! Maybe we can go to the Quebec aftterwards again...

Looks like group things are on the menu.

Does someone less drunk than me want to suggest meeting times/places?

Oh, and secret- marches don't achieve anything. Nor do voting, picketing, or blowing things up. What do you suggest?

Sorry to post again so soon, (but I figure it gives the mods less trouble).

Of course!

Standing for election is the ONE THING that'd work!!!

What's your real name, Secret? Where are you standing, and what for? I'll vote for you... oh. bugger. That doesn't work either.

I am definately up for this. I will also try to drag along invisible_al (if he's not working) and Julia (my housemate who some of you have met) and anyone else foolish enough to stand still and listen to me rant.

Secret - marching in protest is really important for two reasons. 1)How the hell will the government/people in power ever know that we are opposed to what they have done/are doing if we don't stand up and show them. This can be in the form of letters, protest in Parliament Square, or in the form of a big march attended by lots of people that provides an immediate and visual communication of just how many people are NOT happy. 2)It shows other people who are not happy with the above stuff that they are not alone, and encourages people to follow their conscience and that leads to things like the two whistle blowers who have recently broken rank to stand up and say "here is some of the truth". Which I don't think would have happened if pressure groups like the Stop the War Coalition weren't out there making noise and saying NO!

So what time and where!???! I can't remember where the assembly point is, does anyone else know?

I wouldn't miss this if I broke my leg because frankly I love Demonstrations and I feel like they're important. And I'm bringing my whistle so ha! Name a place and I'll see y'all there.

Other than relying on Mr and Mrs Stoatie to get there before the rest of us and wave the Pirate banner proudly might I suggest under the actual Marble Arch at... um, Marble Arch? 11:45 to 12:00? The march probably won't start until half twelve anyway, based on previous experience. After that it'll be mobile work to keep track of everyone...

Tryphena Absent

Sounds good. I'll be there with my entourage. *hehehe*

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Unfortunately, Mrs Stoatie will be working. So I'll be there with the pirate banner, and a distinct lack of TWO- count 'em, TWO- whistles. And probably some rum, as per usual.

17:57 / 16.03.04
Ok, no whistles, but I may see if I ca find something flaggish. In the best tradition... name a pub for afterwards?

Our Lady Has Left the Building
09:30 / 17.03.04
We need a fairly large one as there's supposed to be rain. Princess Louise is no good 'cos it's always super duper packed on a Saturday. What about that one behind Goodge Street Station that we met up in after the Anti-Bush demo, who's name completely escapes me? Is it the Fitroy Tavern I'm thinking of?

10:18 / 17.03.04
You mean the Fitzroy, on Goodge St? I've got other stuff happening both that day and that night, but might conceivably make it to the pub bit. This'll be the first one I've missed, but I'm feeling a bit secret goldfish about all this. I'm not going to go off on my 'what's-the-bloody-point?' rant, though, as I'm too apathetic even for that. God I'm so laid back I'm feeling positively middle-aged here... but then maybe this is what being a thirtysomething's all about.

telyn
11:13 / 18.03.04
So Marble Arch, 11:45 look for the Pirate flag. In view of the lots of people there is there any specific bit of Marble Arch to aim for?

And can anyone give me directions to the Fitzroy? I'm guessing we'll end up there 4pm / 5ish when it gets too cold to walk about anymore.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
13:29 / 18.03.04
Okay, turns out I was thinking of The Fitzrovia instead of The Fitzroy Tavern. I would personally prefer if we went to the Fitzrovia as the Tavern is a filthpub and sells truly revolting booze.

Talyn, hard to say as it'll depend upon total numbers on the march but we'll probably be under the actual arch of MA.

Loomis
18:24 / 18.03.04
might I suggest under the actual Marble Arch at... um, Marble Arch?

Yeah right, you expect me to believe that there is an actual Marble Arch there, just because of the name of the tube station? This better not be like the time we met at Elephant & Castle ...

Squirmelia
18:29 / 18.03.04
Like Xoc, I will probably be there with my Mum. We shall look for the pirate flag under the arch, and hope to find you all!

Better than that--we're rebuiding it THEN re-storming it!
