This is something I though of whilst drunk, ie now.

Most of us are accessing the 'lith via computers that have a graphical backdrop to their user interface, predominantly Windows. Said backdrop, the wallpaper, often goes unnoticed but, much like any environmental element must have some kind of impact on your mood and, as something that adorns such a personal space, be quite an indicator of personality.

As quite a creative, left field, outside the box kinda bunch, I imagine Barbelith's collective Wallpapers to be varied, diverse and frankly quite strange/perverse/huggly. Either that or default wallpapers. Whichever.

Now's the time, then, to let us play a Lloyd Grossman type game, whereby we guess, "What kind of person has a wallpaper like this?"

N.B.
That last quote MUST be read in an outrageous centre-of-atlantic type stylee.

P.S.

Mine is HERE

WARNING - image is almost 1/2 a megabyte. Probably not suitable for dial-up users. So there.

This is mine, at present. I just really like the picture... and... uh, I even changed it a little so the bulding is in the bottom left corner of the screen, and all my icons are arranged on the top right - with my toolbar on the right hand side. I cut off the writing and the line on the street which isn't finished.

It looks cool, and the picture is kinda cute and makes me smile everytime.

Through some quirk of my computer, before this comes up, my computer displays in big red letters "TWAT" from a time when someone changed my background to that in an hilarious joke. This also, makes me laugh, and I have decided not to rectify it.

I usually forget and it surprises me.

Hey, nice thread, great idea. I so wish I could show you mine, so to speak, because I think it’s pretty cool. Er, but I can’t. My computer won’t talk to remote-image-hosting-site-things, for some reason. It’s a bit shy, I think.

I wish I could show you my real wallpaper. Its bad blue/red/green/yellow diagonal stripes with diamonds, which was put up circa 1985. Special.

On my so-called computer, it's plain blue windows paper. Nice pictures slow it down too much. *yearns for art*

Thanks to a link on Tom's blog, I have an endless source of lovely wallpapers, all daily pictures of Toronto...

Deviant Art is THE coolest source for wallpapers. I check it everyday.

Currently it's:

I like to cobble together my wallpapers personally from images I find, and tend to switch out my desktop image every couple of months or so.

There's also Loo Roll which hasn't been updated in a while and Design Chapel has some cool vector wallpaper and the sickest Flash I've ever seen.

Usually I take shots from theatre productions and soup them up myself. I'm also a big fan of what's on offer at nowwashyourhands.com, but currently I'm with this little gem from Mari-Chan:

I've just put wallpaper on my lab computer -which is generally pretty pointless, as all my settings are wiped when I log out, but I thought that it was worth having Diesel Sweeties "I Am Ten Ninjas" wallpaper, if only for the day :

I took this photo a couple of years ago on holidays. It's Wastwater, Cumbria, UK. It calms me and it's been my desktop ever since...

What amused me, when formatting this reply, is that I had to check on the name of the place and, on the first page that opened on my search for "wastwater", I found this:

Which PROVED I had the name right, and that I am a superior photographer!

My wallpaper changes pretty much weekly, but is always drawn from the wonderful artwork of Shag.

I have this gorgeous painting by William Bouguereau. As you can see. Too bad I couldn't tweak the screen resolution and the pic size to achieve maximum undergarment-smearing detailism, but...

(Oh, and meet William Bouguereau. Your eyeballs will thank me.)

I've got this, stretched to fill the screen. I'm a big fan of shapes, and I'm partial to lines too, so that might explain why this is the only wallpaper I've ever had that hasn't got on my tits after five minutes. It manages to stay in the background when I need it to, and gives me something to gawp at when I'm drifting off:

Nuggets

(Village Photos have got a bit wanky about free accounts recently, so if that doesn't work, it's all their fault, and you could try this, it's the first pic).

Hehe.

From the lush brushery of Bouguereau, to the knife-in-the-headedness of Ikenie, the self-harming apple-thing in one easy stroke.

I like them all, and there's been some excellent hyperlinkage going on here, too, but Saveloy - only you and God know what goes on inside your warped mind, and perhaps that's a good thing. Your 'nuggets' truly are the singlemost unsettling wallpaper I've ever seen.....

This is the main monitor of my desktop at work, with winamp etc dragged over to it. It looks rather smashing stretched out over two monitors, lined up horizontally. I usually have very simple dark desktops and far fewer icons just because there's approximately 5.6 billion white-background windows open on top of them anyway. The background's off deviantart somewhere.

I generally just grab whatever catches my attention in the abstract gallery at deviant art and use it for about a week. My background is just basic black with a grey colorscheme. The wallpaper I gravitate towards has a lot of blues and greys on a dark background. Very calming and relaxing.

My current one. I also get a lot from deviantart, and I often take photos which I know will make good wallpaper. I have some great ones from Meteor Crater in Arizona.

Normally I have the iPod on the desktop too, and a few files, but I haven't plugged it in yet today.

My current desktop; dock down the side. I know it's a bit "bikey", but I like it. You can see a 1024*768 version of this paper here, from a biking site I read.

I like it because it's really usable - the colours are in just the right places. I've still got too many icons all over the shop, though...

These are desktops I made years ago. Always meant to link to them here, but never got around to it. They're pretty big, about 2MB apiece.

I have X's Disarmed, a stunning Harry/Snape picture, but sadly she has taken all her Harry Potter art off the internet so I can't link to it. Anyway, it makes me happy inside, because they love each other very much.

Love the mini-bikes wallpaper, Red Cross - any chance of a link to a full-size version?

Hey, solid state - those are pretty fucking cool desktops you've done there. They're now high up on my 'next up' list. Thanks.
