I suspect that the posters who would use the extra box to reveal their gender would be the posters who were openly gendered in their name/posting style/comments anyway, which would make it a bit pointless on the 'gender' front.
I don't mind giving personal information in specific discussions, when it seems that ommitting it would be insufficiently admitting how embedded in the argument I am, but I wouldn't want most of the info available all the time. It's the difference between locating myself when I find it necessary, and having other people locate me when they feel it's necessary.
So - I might out myself in threads, but I'd lie or obfuscate on a tickbox.
And bloody hell (not at Deva, just a general "bloody hell") anyway, what would "gender" mean in a tickbox system anyway? Felt gender identity? "Read" gender? State of fluffy bits? Gaffer-taping all those together would prove a nightmare, I tell you.
I quite like the idea of a line/box for web pages, or a twenty-word summary of self, but then again, I am quietly thrilled by how far you have to take someone at post value on this board. No extraneous info.
"Brighton, England, and my penis lives there too"
This is genius; but I left my penis on an Edinburgh-London fast train over the Christmas break, what do I put? |
