I don't mean in the media, I mean from music snobs who look at every new band and turn their noses up. Indie snobs, perhaps. People deciding on the basis of only having heard the single that this band is merely a novelty, that their lack of "serious" and "earnest" means they are not worth bothering about.

Maybe prevailing is the wrong word, it prevails around me though, dooming me to be lonely at their gig!

Top ten dude, sounds pretty damn popular. I didn't mean to say that the band was a novelty I don't know enough about them to comment just that this single fulfils my criteria quite well for novelty.

Ozzy covered 'Staying Alive'?

I'm not sure what makes 'Comfortably Numb' a novelty single any more than any other cover version which doesn't slavishly ape the original. It could be that people just aren't prepared to something that blends rock and disco seriously - 'Danger! High Voltage!' was also called a novelty record, again erroneously IMHO. Anyway, it doesn't sound much like anything else on the album, but I don't blame them for giving it a wider release - it's too good not to be heard by as many people as possible.

The album, then. Well it's great, obviously. Scattered thoughts on individual tracks:

'Laura' sounds better than ever (the added sax really, really helps).

'Take Your Mama' is indeed as stated above, the best song ever, possibly the song on here most likely to win over doubters (unless they have an insane aversion to melody, which does happen). There's something about it that reminds me of the best of Suede post-Bernard Butler: when they managed to knock out classic three-minute pop songs that begged to be all over radio but had a sneaky little streak of queerness/glorifying the outsider in there. Think 'The Beautiful Ones'. If I can get really muso for a moment, I also really appreciate the way that they put in that "Do it! Take your mama out all night!" bit right after the first chorus, whereas I suspect many bands would save that until the end. There's no restraint here, they're just piling on the hooks with a kind of reckless indulgence (see also: New Pornographers). Go on then, gimme some more sugar (after all, I am your neighbour).

'Lovers In The Backseat' - begins with the most sublime into and then briefly turns into 'Ashes To Ashes' before settling into its own groove. Verrry nice. Chorus reminds me of something I cannot place for the life of me - helpful, aren't I?

'Filthy/Gorgeous' almost fills the gap left by the absence of 'Electrobix' - almost. Crazy 808 sounds. This ought to KILL PEOPLE in the clubs. Ddancefloor devastation!

'Better Luck Next Time' - they've taken Robbie Williams' best (or least bad) song, and replaced all the annoying shitty Robbie-isms with great lines about being a detective without a case and the priceless "Will the fun disappear? Is the binding coming undone?" Then there's a completely unexpected 'Octopus' Garden' guitar wig-out. This has gone from being my least favourite track on the album to my ideal next single after 'Take Your Mama'.

I really wish they'd kept in the banter between Jake and Ana on 'Music Is The Victim', but you can't have everything. This is still a great party tune, with more hilariously good lyrics. The line about "the girls all doin' 'Tina" is, unless I'm very mistaken, a reference to Ecstasy by way of Cristina Aguilera's alter-ego 'X-Tina'. I love this band.

‘It Can’t Come Quickly Enough’ – gorgeous, just gorgeous. Evocative of everything from ‘Careless Whispers’ to Pet Shop Boys, maybe a tiny bit of Depeche Mode in there too… If there’s one song on the album that really proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Scissor Sisters are a band to love, and not just a fun, trashy, pissed-up shag (nowt wrong with that, obviously), this it it. If there’s is any justice, this one will achieve anthem status.

Some reviewers have called 'Return To Oz' prog, but I'm not sure it's prog just because it's, uh, conceptual. Songs as extended metaphors has been done by others, of course - a better comparison here might be the Magnetic Fields. It really works here, too - it's clever, but not distractingly so. (And the spectre of Fairuza Balk looks large. I mean shit, does everyone else remember how fucked-up that movie is, and how much more fucked-up and terrifying it seemed at the time?)

The message from Ana Matronic at the end of the album cracks me up - it's all about the horse noise. Those talking book things were cool - I had an A-Team one and a Spiderman one.

'The Skins' might just be the best thing on here, though. Production reminiscent of the DFA (the only time this is the case on the album really, except maybe 'Filthy/Gorgeous', so I don't know what James Dudley is on about). Another one to fill floors.

"Have you been kissed by a computer?
Are you able to move your hips?"

Flyboy! You have renewed me!
You're good at catching those sly refs, unless your pop brain is just going crazy overtime. I've not heard a bunch of the album tracks too, and I'm looking foward to hearing them moreso after your glowing thoughts.

I am super psyched for monday (gig!) now.
And hopefully, I shall receive the album on big beautiful vinyl on my birthday. I just want the vinyl one so I can gawp at the sleeve better.

Then me and my family can all sit around the record player and sing along...

Just got the album, and it's a much more cohesive package than anything before (demo album, etc). It just all works together as a lovely whole piece, and the packaging is lovely. I'm really pleased with it, much more than I thought I would be. I was kinda getting a bit tired of them. I think the album works really well though, I've listened to it through about 3 times - it feels kind of old, but brand new in that sense, it all comes together here. Their aesthetic pays off well and Mary is a great song.

note: I've got the vinyl version because I wanted it to hear nasty on my horrid old record player (record collection = 4). It has a lovely sleeve emblazoned with the scissor logo, and pictures of all of them, w/ the lyrics. It's great. I assume the cd is the same, but I liked the art, and wanted it bigger.

Unfortunately this means the message from matronic + the extra tracks are gone. Anyone wanna help me out?

Hi all, I've bought the english version with two bonus tracks "get it, get it" and "the skins" but before that I downloaded a full album that I though was the american version but its not its the 8 track version and its better in my opinion, its as if the record label told them to remove all the profaine, gay bits.

They're favourites of the Readers Wifes, at Duckie. I like the album and adore the singles (I love the fact that someone has actually immortalised the gay truism that the best way to come out to one's family is to take one's mother out and get her jacked up on cheap champagne).

Lust-wise, I'm fixated on Babydaddy, the hairy, beary little co-writer and Eltonesque pianist. Apparently he gets most of the fanmail - which is nice.

So there I was, lounging in the Living Room (7th floor of the W Hotel) and ... what comes out over the speakers? None other than Take Your Mama.

I nearly dropped my drink.

I have to say, although I still find Comfortably Numb painful and uncomforttable, that the album is really fucking brilliant.

I've just heard the original Pink Floyd version of 'Comfortably Numb' (or as I will henceforth think of it, the cover version that through some fluke got released some thirty-odd years before the original). I really don't know who's version is better. Damn the Floyd, and they part-financed Monty Python and the Holy Grail! Damn their beady little eyes and their beards! And if they don't have beards, damn their imaginary beards! Which are crying!

Apparently they were originally called Dead Lesbian and the Fibrillating Scissor Sisters (which would've been even better).

Still slightly peeved that all the interviews seem to focus (perhaps understandably) on Jake and, secondarily, Ana - when I want to know more about the enigmatic Babydaddy. The tension between he and Jake is palpable - and palpably intriguing...

I can't resist the pull of the Sisters.
I dismissed them initially as this years Fischerspooner but I've since had to eat my words oh-so-many times over.
The album is great, how can I get a copy of the demo version though?

Jake is nice... but I'd rather shag the guitarist. Or the drummer (only straight member apparently).

Chiming in on this a little late:

Until last month, I worked in a clothes shop.

I had to listen to "Laura" and "Take Your Mama Out (AKA Theme To The Golden Girls Spinoff Time Forgot") TWICE a day.

So I think I am qualified to say this: The Scissor Sisters are fucking horrid. Sounds like Barry Gibb being kicked in the nuts by Elton John, but less awesome.

Encouraged by their lead singer's sense of style - and, coupled with the recent Berlin trip (and Goldfrapp influences), I'm heading clubwards this evening in full leather Polizei uniform, complete with hat. The Scissor Sisters have a lot to answer for...

What I meant was that I'd heard each song about 50 times, so it wasn't just a knee-jerk thing, Suede.

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!
21:51 / 27.06.04
Yeah, I get that. I'd just prefer to know why you think that way, rather than you just bursting in to an old thread shouting "it's rubbish!!!!!" and not really saying why other than in an NME-y soundbite "this + this and this but less good" way.

I just wanna know what you think, is all! And in my experience really focussed prolonged exposure to many songs - especially forced listening to mainstream radio stations in working conditions - can create a hatred for a great many good and wonderful things.

But see, my love for Basement Jaxx's "Romeo" and Daft Punk's "One More Time" (both on rotation) remained strong. If I like a song, I'll happily stick it on repeat ad infinitum.

It's more that the songs were just kind of annoying and pedestrian- no killer hooky bits, no hair-stands-on-end choruses, just two achingly middle of the road (and TYMOAN really does sound like the theme to a golden girls spin off (assuming they aren't dead here), I can almost see the bloody credits in my head) singles. And of course, familiarity breeds contempt, and familiarity mixed with overhyping fastbreeds hatred, at least in my experience. The music in the job really was driving me insane for about two weeks, and those songs happened to be in that salvo.

You've heard it lots, you don't like it.
I can settle on that, no problems.

I for my part will be wearing my hair in homage to Jake (side-parting-style) according to my dear sister. I honestly hadn't noticed the resemblence until she pointed it out yesterday.
Now I'm not sure if I'm overjoyed at my unwitting-fan-ish-ness or horrified and my sheep-like-ability-to-swipe-popstar-style.
They rocked at Glastonbury (on TV natch) but nothing beats them up close and personal.
Anyone know why they're not playing Big Gay out (for my sins).

Yay, I'm going to see Scissor Sisters at the Royal Albert Hall!

My friend's going to wear a red dress and feather boa, I was thinking about wearing my Rusty Ryan suit and blue stripy shirt, what do you think? Oh, and I need advice about appropriate footwear too if anyone could help I'd be most grateful.

I'm a man by the way, in case that makes any sartorial difference!

Gotta say, I'm not impressed, having listened to half the album so far. I'm with Radiator - it's middle of the road seventies pap, and not particularly good middle of the road seventies pap. Speaking as a fan of middle of the road seventies pap, I'm not impressed with the Scissor Sisters' particular brand of middle of the road seventies pap. No matter how cool they are as pop stars, which they most certainly are.

Although 'Babydaddy' is one of the greatest pop star pseudonyms since LL Cool J.

Just got the CD. This band is great fucking fun. I haven't stopped dancing to 'Filthy/Gorgeous' and 'Take Your Mama Out' I also really like 'Return to Oz' and 'Comfortably Numb'(more than the PF version too. It's like the weird offspring of Pink Floyd and the Bee Gees). I'm dying to see these guys live.

Heard the album at last in the pub on friday. One good song - the one with lots of kick drum - but these guys really need some funk or electro in the mix to not sound like Elton Jon or the Bee Gees. I just can't hear anything that justifies all the excitement surrounding them.

boy from USA here - they're just starting to get some good press here, and I bought the disc based on an immediate infatuation with "Can't Come Quickly Enough" which I heard on the "Party Monster" soundtrack (execellent fucking disc as well). So far after a couple of listens, "Laura" is my fave, although "TYMO" is being touted as the hot single...

Must admit also that I'm a big Pink Floyd fan, and while the Sisters' version isn't ground-breaking, it's good fun, and makes me want to dig out my old Floyd records again to hear the original!

Also, re: Jake's buff bod... YUM YUM YUM... i can only hope that they tour my hometown of Pittsburgh PA so that i can get close enuff to lick the sweat off of his beautiful abs...

I like "Laura" now, after being force fed it for some time. Had a discussion with Seth recently in which I suggested that their version Comfortably Numb is making a mockery of the original, whereas he felt that it's capturing the same sentiments in a different style. It's not a style I can relate to whatsoever, so perhaps that's the difficulty I'm having with it. I'm just not hearing what a lot of other people are hearing...
