I think most of the subcultures (Punk, Goth "hippie" etc) are essentially the same, only they had different clothing and different sounding music but the sentiment behind it was always the same - often from disadvantaged people who eventually got to the "FUCK IT!" point, and rather that wallowing in their misery, decided to swim in it instead via art... at the beginning of any movement, it's rarely the well off you'll find in its ranks.
It starts out as an underground thing, rejected by the mainstream until its growth increases and then suddenly the mainstream has absorbed it, fucked around with it to suit itself and them punted back out with its own TV channel and chain clothing store. (Just look at goth in the late 90's/mid 2000's especially.)
The real subcultures never actually change, although the clothing and the style of the music do. In it's purest form, it's closer to the bohemians of 1900's Paris than anything else. |
