Unless someone wants to flesh this thread out - and I don't - I'm going to move for a deletion.

"where did all the excitement go? not just in music, with most popular culture at the moment."

Apologies if this has already been stated, I've yet to read the whole thread, but surely like a fish in water you are HERE participating in the next big thing, THE INTERNET, the digital communication movement. I mean, could the next big thing be any bigger?

"Andy Warhol said that, in the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes," Harris told me. "But I think he misunderstood what was happening. I think what people are demanding is 15 minutes of fame every day. And mark my words, they will get it. That's where we're heading, whether we like it or not."

I think most of the subcultures (Punk, Goth "hippie" etc) are essentially the same, only they had different clothing and different sounding music but the sentiment behind it was always the same - often from disadvantaged people who eventually got to the "FUCK IT!" point, and rather that wallowing in their misery, decided to swim in it instead via art... at the beginning of any movement, it's rarely the well off you'll find in its ranks.

It starts out as an underground thing, rejected by the mainstream until its growth increases and then suddenly the mainstream has absorbed it, fucked around with it to suit itself and them punted back out with its own TV channel and chain clothing store. (Just look at goth in the late 90's/mid 2000's especially.)

The real subcultures never actually change, although the clothing and the style of the music do. In it's purest form, it's closer to the bohemians of 1900's Paris than anything else.

Though the chance of you seeing this is likely slim: What do you mean by "The real subcultures never actually change"?
