Anyone fancy meeting up on Sunday afternoon? Me and my gf will be in London that weekend and at a loose end.

Somewhere where you can get soft drinks (tea/coffee/juice?) as well as B-E-E-R for a non-extortionate price ideally.

Oh fiddlesticks and flapdoodle, I'm working this weekend. Oh well, enjoy the Smoke...

Can someone from Southampton go, steal Deva and bring her back here as birthday present?

Squirmelia
11:09 / 02.12.03
I might be in London that day, but am not sure that I could manage to steal her for you.

[wriggles ecstatically, flaps hands at _pin in tizzy] Oh, you young things! [blushes]

Coincidentally enough, I have to get back from Southampton to London that day, so while I'd like to make this (if there is a 'this' yet), I'm not sure it's entirely feasible. Will do my best, which was never good enough for my gym teacher, but there you go.

Will more than likely turn up, providing I'm still alive in the New Year.

I too am very upset that I cannot come. Have fun, folks.

Far be it from me to shamelessly whore a project I'm involved in, but in terms of location I would suggest the Three Horseshoes Pub, 28 Heath Street, Hampstead.
streetmap

Reasons are:
1. It's a Wetherspoon's and they are legendarily cheap, but it's also quite a nice old pub with a reasonable amount of space

2. It's literally 2 mins from Hampstead tube, on the corner of Heath St (downhill end) and Oriel Court, and therefore pretty easy to find

3. I'm going to be there anyway from about 3.30-7pm because the play I'm directing, Johnny Simple, is on at 5 and I think beer + Restoration-era comedy are natural partners. The show's only an hour long and if lots of people are up for combining a barbemeet with a mirthtastic theatre outing I can probably wangle a group discount.

Thoughts?

I find that actually reading threads before you reply limits the range of potential responses one can make.

Ermm... think I'll be away this Sunday.

Oooh, I'm keen to meet up as I think Deva is one of the longer standing 'Loids that I've never met (apart from all the foreign ones that is). And I keep saying I'll come to WP's plays and then never do, I can assuage my guilt at the same time. 'Tastic!

Hoom. I'd like to see Deva and partner, along with you other lovely people, but if I'm in London I'll be in London on the way back from Right-on, and I don't think making it up to Hampstead from Right-on, and then south back home, is likely to be a goer even if the trains are mirabile dictu working...

What about getting the train to Kings X, then switch onto the line up to West Hampstead?

I can try... I'm meant to be away but my car was failing to go over 30 miles an hour the other day and if it's broken I can't go so you never know. Fate might be smiling upon this meet. Plus the posters for WP's play are good though I don't think I can afford to see it.

I should like very much to see you, Deva, but I'm not in London this weekend. Would also like to see Whisky's play as it sounds right up my alley. Sadly I will be recovering from family shenanigans with nuns and vicars. Hopefully better luck next time...

Yeah, I'll probably be about on sunday afternoon, post-saturday hangovers permitting, as ever.

I'd like to come, although might have to leave a bit early to go to a Nanowrimo meet. How will I recognize people?

Look for a bloke in a skirt. It'll either be me or the mugger who mugged me and isn't too fussy about wearing what he can get. If I forget to wear a skirt I'll try and remember to wear a blank badge proudly upon my lapel. If I forget that, you'll have to do like we all did in the old days and ask random strangers.

Purely because the last time I said something like this I got a panicked emial from someone who'd misinterpreted what I'd said: I have not yet been mugged while trannying around town. To Those Who Dwell Above in Darkness: That previous statement does not count as tempting fate, right?

ONLY NICE THINGS

I don't think there is a direct train to Kings Cross on Sundays, but either way it's just a queston of logistics: if coming from Right-on I'm not sure I'll get there in time to schlep up to North London, or be able then to schlep back down.

Anyway, if it is in Hampstead I will try to turn up, and if it is somewhere else I will also try to turn up.

I'm fairly sure there is a direct train between Brighton and Kings X, not an express train unfortunately but what more do you want?

Ariadne
06:02 / 04.12.03
Yes, Thameslink trains go from Brighton to Kings Cross, via London Bridge.

I'll try to be there, Deva - be good to see you.

Whisky Priestess
09:36 / 04.12.03
It's always nice, isn't it, when everybody's right? Although there is *historically* a regular KX/Right-on service at the weekends, according to my sources, Thameslink in its infinite wisdom has recently been and will on Sunday 7th be doing "works" on the King's X part of the network, thus obliging the service to stop at London Bridge.

But be of good cheer! This does not prevent the average able-bodied Barbelite from making it to Hampstead before terminal lethargy sets in! For London Bridge and Hampstead are both on the tube, see?

At London Bridge our intrepid Barbemeeter must walk through a magical kingdom of underground tunnels to the Northern line northbound platform, where tube trains running every 5-10 minutes to Edgware will drop you off a mere ten stops (that's usually about half an hour) hence at Hampstead.

Once at Hampstead, rejoice! For you are only a few minutes from cheap beer, 2 meals for £6.99 and all the theatre you can eat at the Three Horseshoes Pub.

There, that wasn't so hard, was it?

(other ironic itineraries provided on request)

Also, re Tryphena's poverty, I'm thinking of making Sunday pay-what-you-can day, if I can get the moneyman of the play to let me charge people less for the purposes of providing a decent-sized audience. Honestly, anyone would think theatre wasn't dead ...

Tryphena Absent
10:55 / 04.12.03
So all I need to know is the status of the Tryphena-mobile. Will it work? Won't it work? Ooh everything depends on the ability of the machine to accelerate on demand.

Cat Chant
20:04 / 04.12.03
Cool! We won't come to the play but we'll be in the pub, um, some time in the afternoon (when is the best time to optimize meeting both early-leavers and late-arrivers?)

To recognize us, look for the intergenerational dyke couple. This is a good tactic, as it can go wrong in only two ways:

(1) There is more than one intergenerational dyke couple in the pub, in which case we love the pub and will drink there every day even though we live in Leeds, so everyone is a winner;

(2) People looking for us ask mother-and-daughter duos if they are going out together, which is funny for the onlookers.

Cat Chant
20:07 / 04.12.03
(Bah, though, for all the wonderful people I won't see, both met and unmet. Maybe I should come to London more often... though the thought of how much I hate the fucking Northern Line is putting me off that plan already. Maybe you should all move to Yorkshire. Leeds has been voted the best city in the UK to live in, you know.)

So which one of you is Mum and which one is daughter? And we really need to organise setting up the Barbelith safehouse for out-of-towners to stay at...

What times are you likely to arrive and leave, Deva?

Whisky Priestess

Won't ... come ... to the play?

I sang for you, Deva. I sang and wore combats and a tiara.
How quickly we forget ...

If you see someone looking lost and at least vaguely resembling these photos, then that will probably be me. I have sort of reddish hair and will wear a black and purple Invader Zim top. I suppose I could hold up my Nanowrimo sign just to confuse everyone?

Cat Chant
09:13 / 05.12.03
Sorry, WP! Haus - will be sorting arriving / leaving times as soon as people tell me when "leaving early for Nanowrimo meet" and "arriving late from [journey]" means in terms of actual time, with o'clocks and everything.

And now I must get on a train...
