Perhaps choosing more obsure symbols, if the need arises to use a symbol, would be better. It may save a lot of fustration, time and energy, having to explain the occult and magick to those who are afraid and/or ignorant of it.

The only drawback with that, might be some "in-the-know" mages being a too nosey. But if I have learned nothing else from Barbelith, theorybitching one's way out of an issue is one lesson I'll always treasure.

HAHAHA! Guess what? I found my pentacle! Sitting, of course, on my bedroom altar. I swear it wasn't there yesterday.

Did I mention that the magick and the universe crack me up?

I also have two other related, but fairly inconspicuous charms on the same chain. Since I've added them, people notice the pentagram far less and thus, spare me their comments.

I've got a tatoo which sometimes shows depending on the length of the sleeves of the t-shirt I'm wearing. It's a complex glyph that is quite loaded with meaning. People inquire about it from time to time, and I have several different explanations for it. Sometimes I base my explanation off the inquire's assumptions (if s/he asks, "Is that such-and-such"), other times I give a bit more detailed explanation.

Fortunately there is not really any readily recognizable imagery (like an ankh or cross or whatever), so it's pretty easy to make up whatever I feel like at the time (although I have about three or four "stock" explanations). The only bits readily recognizable are some knot-work & some runes. Sometimes people inquire about the runes, either they know what runes are or they ask about the characters. I typically skip over the sets of runes that are there to convey certain frequencies of energies, but I sometimes will say that they are words (which is true of half of the runes). Again, the inquirer's knowledge is often reflective of my explanation.

For the curious the words are: 'cut', 'splice', 'paste', and 'loop'.

It's sometimes fun but more often tedious to explain that kinda stuff..I carry a silver ankh in my keychain (I'm not a goth, FYI), a silver Ohm on a necklace and I have a tat in my shoulder with the the japanese kanji for "Do" (or Tao)..Luckily, they are never on display all at the same time, or I would be pissed when they ask me 'bout them..

[off topic...slightly]

Explaining magical symbols to people that you wear about your person.

That is from the summary. It must have read it wrong because I got an image of Anna de Logardiere with little people hanging off of her person, as she was explaining some magickal symbols to them, (with a little pointer stick and all!). Made me laugh.

No severed limbs, however.

I would also love a plain white button.

I've been halfheartedly concocting one for a few months. But now I actually have spray paint so it's going to be in working order soon. The question is, of course, what to use as a base? A button with meaning you want to negate? Or a button with meaning you want to "subliminally" incorporate?

Yes, I get this sort of thing all the time whenever I go to work wearing my 'Studio One' or 'Trojan Records' t-shirts. I'm constantly being pestered by my work colleagues to explain the occult symbology of Jackie Mittoo's 'Last Train to Skaville' recording, or the hidden alchemical formulas within Justin Hinds and the Dominoes 60s hit 'Carry Go Bring Come'. It wears you down.

"Just go to SoulJazz or Selectadisc and buy some re-press 45s", I tell them, "turn the bass up on Dennis Alcapone and skank about your flat, then come back to me with your questions" I say to them. "Rocksteady" and/or "The Occult" is not something that can be explained in glib throwaway terminology, I can't adequately explain it to you in five minutes over a pint, it's experiential, it's about doing.

That's a pretty good explanation right there, though.

(*slaps forehead*) Of course! Here I've been looking for a blank badge all this time, when I could just take one I already have and paint it white...

I've never felt comfortable wearing overt occult symbols, largely because of others' often misguided interest. I wore a pentacle very briefly, but stopped because everyone assumed it meant I was Wiccan (especially other Wiccans), and that wasn't quite where I was at. I do have a beautiful silver Thor's Hammer that doesn't look at all like an inverted cross, is small enough to be unobtrusive, and hangs on a chain that is long enough to be worn inside most clothes, so I do occasionally wear that. Every once in a while someone asks what it is, and others ask if I'm Asatru - with about the same frequency, oddly enough.

I do wear craploads of other jewelry, and most of the pieces are significant to me in some way even though they don't have "symbols" on them. Generally they elicit no commentary beyond the occasional "Nice ring/earrings/necklace/bracelet/anklet/toe ring/whatnot."

The only actual symbol I always have on me is a tattoo in the small of my back; a circular triptych of three horses with Celtic knotwork. I had some magical intent when I got it - the horse symbolizes strength and power to me, and in getting it over my spine I hoped to gain some of that fortitude; plus, in my mind the three horses stand for three of my favorite deities. But if anyone bothers to examine the tat, all I usually get is "Oh, you must like horses." (Or sometimes, "I like your unicorns." Despite the fact that there are no freakin' horns there. Not even anything you could reasonably mistake for a horn.) Fairly innocuous commentary, if a bit vapid.

I think fate is trying to tell me something, I have lost all magical symbols that I've ever worn. Where they have gone- nobody knows?

I've found they just vanish over time, like occult Zippo lighters, or summat.

I used to wear a pentacle. I kept it inside my shirt for months before I felt comfortable with it. When I did wear it outside my clothes I got wonderful questions like "Do you worship Satan?" or "Oh, are you Jewish?"(I'm not sure who found that one funnier, me or the Jewish girl next to me). I went back to keeping it under my shirt. I don't have the necklace anymore (got rid of it when I 'fell out' of Wicca).

I do feel like I need something magickal on me to sort of keep the energy flowing. I'm thinking of something with a capricorn symbol or a leminiscate(sp - the infinty symbol); I think I'll keep it hidden whatever I get.

Being a devotee of Mielikki I wear a unicorn pendant as my holy symbol. Its one of the first things I put on in the morning and the last thing I take off at night. I wear it inside my shirt so keep it out of the way at work, but I've worn it exposed a few times with no problems. no one thinks too much about a unicorn pendant. I don't really think much about it when I'm wearing it but on the extremely rare occasion I forget to wear it, when I discover its not there I just feel out of touch. Not like my goddess isn't with me but more like the connection just isn't quite as strong. So I guess it really serves as a conduit of spiritual energy for me, or a sort of fetish if you like.

I'm in the process of constructing my own magickal system for my religion, since I haven't found much info on it outside the Kalevala, and I'm thinking of creating a pendant with a unicorn head inside of a Pentacle. I wonder if anyone will notice the unicorn at all or if all attention will be drawn to the pentacle. Guess I'll find out when its done

I asked Eris about this issue and The Goddess said to me, "Wear it inside your shirt." Problem solved.

She knows it's there!

Chuckle

I used to wear a 'stone-with-a-hole-in-it' around my neck but no one knew. It fell off one day and I didnt notice...

Now I carry my master crystal with me but thats in my pocket. When Im bored I can charge it and its there should I need it. Also my experiance of healing (Reiki) people when I am intoxicated leads to me becoming very sober very quickly, which is a tad irritating to say the least but now I can hand them my crystal and its had great results so far.

However then people start asking questions a plenty I usually give the standard Reiki explanation but sometimes I teach them how to scan (which I have found everyone can do) which normally shuts em up or at least makes em think they are as daft as I.

I practiced reiki inadvertently once a long time ago. Having never bothered to discover what I had done (incidentally it involved someone's foot) I had no idea until you just used the word scan. I now understand how this practice was invented. I'm like a reiki genius or something!
