The brave boys of Tranmere have surged into the top half of the table with a battling 1-0 at the weekend - the play-offs are still a mathematical possibility, but then so is relegation. Say what you like about the Nationwide, but the almost universal mediocrity of the teams keeps you guessing...

But Leeds... at the risk of tempting fate, it looks like they might be hitting form at just the right moment. The players can worry less about off-field issues, and concentrate on playing either for a place in the starting line-up next season or, more realistically, a transfer to a good team. They're level on points with Blackburn, who are in freefall, and other strugglers are finding it near-impossible to get their form together. I think the injury to van Buyten couldn't have come at a better time for Leeds - without him, I can genuinely see Man City going down with Leicester or Blackburn.

It's a shame - I particularly wanted Wolves to stay up, although why exactly when their success (such as it is) came from the resources of UKIP-supporting Jack Hayward I don't know. Respect and sympathy for Dave Jones, I think. Without the Hayward money coming in, I don't think they ever really had a chance, and they may well struggle to get back into the premiership - rae is leaving, and aging, as is Ince, so they are going to be out a midfield at the start of next season and don't have any players of genuine quality not nearing the end of their careers. It's sad, but that's life. Blackburn, man City *or* Leeds would be more disturbing, as it would dump a whole bunch of notionall premiership players, with wage bills to match, onto the transfer list and into the Nationwide.

So, where did it go wrong for these teams? The problems of Leeds have been well-documented, and Leicester's reliance on free-transfer offcuts trying to get on the end of Muzzy Izzet corners was always going to be tricky, but did the rot start for Blackburn with the failure to replace Damien Duff? Brett Emerton not turning out to be all that? And Man City - theoretically potential UEFA material, if nothing better - will Keegan stick to his policy of spending twenty pounds in attack for every pound in defence at his *next* club?

And an away win for Watford in the big bottom of the table six pointer this afternoon! Burnley! Alastair Campbell, The National Front, Maggie Thatcher, Winston Churchill! Your boys got beat today.

7 points in the last 3 games look like they might just keep the 'horns up but it's hella tight at the bottom. You're right about the nationwide Haus, mediocrity makes it close. Yet Watford must stay up, we have celebrity fans.

Mwaaaaaaha, Haus. Please don't say things like that. I haven't got enough wooden rabbit's feet on me...

Everton are safe, but everyone below them is potential. It's very tight. I'm obviously not the most objective judge, but I think it might be Leicester City and Man City. They've both got fucking nasty-looking run-ins.

I think Leicester are sleeping with the fishes. Mind you, Easter Monday appears to have disproved every supposition I've made (Blackburn winning and scoring four, most obviously), so you probably don't want to talk to me about it. I think Everton are safe, but it's astonishing just how bad a season they and Tottenham have had...

Meanwhile, Tranmere score another meaningless victory with two goals against Wycombe Wanderers. Who's the Dadi?

This thread has flagged up how much more interesting the bottom of the prem/top of the nationwide is than the premiership title. It could be a tight Chelsea/Arsenal run in, and I still don't know anyone who would care that much.
People do seem to genuinely care who goes down though, even though they're not fans of the teams in trouble. Shame about Wolves, hope Portsmouth stay up, glad to see Leicester sink like a slimy stone - that sort of thing.

I am sorry to see Stoke aren't likely to make the playoffs though.

Well, gosh. It's getting really dramatic now. Watching a relegation struggle is always weird - the way teams sort of fall up out of your view...

So, it looks like Wolves and Leicester, basically nbeeding four wins out of four and a lot of luck, are down. It's a shame - I like both Dave Jones and Micky Adams as managers - both they both paid the price for not being able to reinforce their squads with genuine quality (nad, in the case of Leicester, la Manga could hardly have helped, although going back there might be seen by some as stupidity). In particular, I feel for Wolves, just because they have spent so long feelign that their presence outside the Premiership was somehow unjust, only to find their noses being rubbed unceremoniously in just how far they have fallen off the pace).

It seems, after Pompey's startling (and very amusing) defeat of Man U, that it's likely to be one of Leeds and Man City. Despite the mauling by Arsenal, Leeds seem to be in better shape in some ways - morale appears higher, and they are still showing more consistency than City - but the injuries to their midfield are really starting to stack up - didn't they start against Arsenal with two centre-halves in midfield? Meanwhile, the pain for Keegan ain't just a trapped nerve...

So - who would you rather were relegated? Leeds, the meteoric team of young stars blighted by thuggery and poor financial management, now facing a potential financial meltdown and the loss of their entire first team if they go down, or Man City, arguably the unluckiest team of their size north of Wolverhampton? Which of these high-spending, high-wage teams is more apt to win your sympathy?

(Meanwhile, down in the second, Tranmere are really hitting form now they have no chance of actually achieving anything. 5 goals away? Futile, but cheering...)

God, Eugene Dadi. Does he still win lots of pens and not score very often, despite showing an occasional amazing touch?

That's what he did at Aberdeen.

b.i.p.; this year's Celtic team are absolutely a class above the SPL. I'd go so far as to say they're among the best 20 clubs in Europe at present. As far as non-competition goes, there are two teams who lie unassailable and unbeaten at the top of their leagues in the UK, ya kno.

But as a 'provincial fan', I'd quite like the mooted-and-booted idea of the sectarian duo pissing off to the Premiership. Celtic'd probably be in around, or above, the Newcastle/Liverpool/Charlton sector, and the 'Gers - based on this season - would quite possibly be facing First Division footie.

Which would be a pant-wettingly hilarious eventuality for me.

Meanwhile Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen and the two Dundee teams would likely enjoy greater commitment from their generally unenthusiastic catchments, given the distinct opportunity to win trophies.

That said, we'd endure taunts likening our league to the diddy ones in Ireland, Wales and NI which I wouldn't like so very much.

BiP's post, subtitle:

In Wich Man Fucking U can't win the one time in history I want them to

Falcon: which 'province'?

Pretty much agree with you, esp on Celtic.

As re the rest of it.

arrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggh.

I've maintained it'll be us for a long while now. (with occasional lapses in optimism). Not changed my mind, oddly enough. Our injury problems are ludicrous atm (Tann, you are quite right re our cunning 'centrehalves/midfield' strategy. Yep,that'll stop the finest attack in the premiership. ) And i know many will be pleased to see us go.

Down we go....

I'm an Aberdeen fan, bip. Shit season, waste of time. Would've been entirely worth it if Frankie 'no chin' DeBoer hadn't got a last minute equaliser at Pittodrie, though.

Was ruined by Livingston. Fucking Livingston. It's not even a proper place.

I think Leeds could def-o catch Man City. Not sure I particularly want them to. Would like Blackburn to drop, based on pure Souness-hate. He's actually a shit manager, isn't he? What's he ever achieved? Winning the Turkish Cup with Galatasaray and the Scottish League with Murray's mi££ions? Every English team he's managed have gone to pieces.

God, Eugene Dadi. Does he still win lots of pens and not score very often, despite showing an occasional amazing touch?

Fewer penalties, I think - he owes his place in the team at present largely to injury to the godlike Siimon Haworth and the fact that Ian Hume can't play evening matches because they are past his bedtime, but he has his moments.

Plus, of course, he is the most glamorous player at Tranmere (tm). Not a massive competition, admittedly...

Make your own joke about whether or not you want this man to go down.

And then, can anyone explain why Joe Cole’s place in the England squad is being threatened by the emergence of Scott Parker? Sven is bloody strange. I mean, if Parker’s going to break into the squad because of his fab form all season, there are surely players there he’s better suited to be replacing.

England play in white, you know. This question does belongs in this thread.

Play Up Pompey, Pompey Play Up! (you may replace play with stay at your leisure)

Well, there has to be some recompense for being born there, personally I'd prefer cash money but I'll take what I can get. Not to worry Leeds fans, you'll always be welcome to a poor pie and family atmosphere at Vicarage Road next season.

Also, Liverpool! In White! Beating Man U! Despite at one point fielding an all donkey forward line of Heskey and Cheyrou! Wonders will never cease.

BiP:

For what it's worth, I still think Man City are more likely to go down than Leeds, even after your lot cocked up against Portsmouth. I mean, MC are imploding as we speak, the mutinous, backstabbing, cliquy, overweight, underperforming bunch of hasbeens and fuckups that they are. Keegan's no tactical genius either, pressure is like kryptonite to him. And they’re due to pick up a couple of suspensions; and anyway, Viduka’s back soon. You can quote me on this prediction in three weeks’ time, by the way. So, chin up, you’ll feel grrreeeeaatt when it’s the last day of the season and it all works out.

Huggles, BiP. I'm still clinging with increasingly little evicence to Wolves, Leicester, Man City, but it looks like a nail-biter...

So, what's more absurd, speaking of playing in white - Man U getting a penalty against them at Old Trafford, or Liverpool converting it?

hmm. More astonished at the conversion, personally. Bizarre stuff. Battle was won in midfield, Gerrard was excellent, Keane non-existent. This should make tbe resumption of his Ireland career interest. Ha.

Oh, bah, BiP. It really is rotten, and it's a rotten way to go down. If it's any consolation, Tranmere were also relegated and staring bankruptcy in the face, and they have stormed back to... um... relative financial stability and... um... mid-table obscurity in Division Two.

I'll stop trying to be comforting now, shall I? Hugs and commiserations.
