Yep, putting Liefeld on anything counts as madness in my book.

Okay, so the guy is a huge name, and I'm sure he'll shift a few comics, that is, before everyone remembers just how incredibly shit he actually is.

INCREDIBLY SHIT.

I mean, the guy is so fucking awful his work is almost compelling.

Note, I said almost.

Found out today who the replacement is going to be for New X-men (it may very well be a smoke screen rumour though).

Think vampires.

He was the only person I'd even consider staying on for. Bugger. I really wanted to escape the X-world.

Don't say it's Steve Niles. What a crap writer...

Whedon?!

Seriously tho, spit it out rawkusboi.

Out with it, bub... I've waited too long for this bit...

Oh...awesome! I knew Anne Rice would make her way to comics someday! All of those petitions have finally paid off!

Anne Rice on New X-Men would be officially the FUNNIEST THING EVER.

Stephen King. It all makes sense now! It's the only name that would cause the reactions that have been floating around (I mean, big deal, Joss Whedon's written mad comics before). And you know King has had at least some perfunctory exposure to comics (Heroes For Hope, the World's End intro, Dark Knight Returns blurb).

I'll set my watch and warrant on it.

And be proven wrong in...five...four...three...two...one....

My sources say Joss.

I'm usually a very sceptical person when it comes to things like this especially as I've stated elsewhere that he's the only person that could make me even consider sticking around but my friend is kosher (I trust him and he had a few different sources himself for this tidbit of information, Mark Millar himself being one of them).

Still think there could be some smoke screening going on. I wouldn't be suprised. Mostly cause Mark Millar was a source actually.

I think Whedon makes more sense right now than any other choice, just as long as he can stay on schedule...

well buffy has had it's ups and downs, and the nu-grim tone of recent series has been a bit tedious, but i reckon wheddon has an eye for the big story arc and the indepth characterisation & interplay of people that makes a good x-book so he gets my vote

i wonder if kevin smith is in the running as well, big time comix-geek, great line in dialogue, although dogma was very annoying and makes me think that big themes are out of his league

personally though i would like it to go to ricky gervias

Oh. My. God. Ricky Fucking Gervais. And Stevie Merchant, of course.

That would be my favorite. Professor X made redundant? Logan asking out Jean, no, just as friends. And Scott coming around, grabbing her tits, being a total cock. Hank as Gareth? Do we dare to dream?

oh the awkwardness down at the school would be lovely, and profs desperate attempts to appear young and vital to the students. would he do the toe curling disco dance after magneto's brilliant saturday night fever charity act?

Bobossboy thinks kevin Smith is shit.

Why does Boboss think this?

1. No sense of pace. Loves seas of talking heads.

2. Obsessed with angst, sex and Catholicism. Grow up.

3. Er, his entire Daredevil run. You know, with an antagonist that, um, kills himself because he’s so crap – grand climax, Kev, just grand!

4. The fact that his DD arc was just an excuse for him to kill Mysterio.

5. He wastes the form. Any technical innovations? No. Any attempts to explore the medium’s potential? No. Any narrative dynamism whatsofuckingever? No. Jesus (blasphemy!), the characters barely move.

Kevin Smith gets anywhere near X Men, and… and… nnn… I’ll stop buying it.

hadn't realised he's had a shot at men in tights writing, hey ho, ricky gervias it is then, but i'll try and read the trade of smiths DD next time i am in a comic shop

I wouldn't worry about Kevin Smith. He's gone on record several times over that he's not a big fan of the X-Men and wouldn't want to work on an X-comic. He turned down the Uncanny X-Men job - Quesada originally wanted it to be Morrison and Smith on the two flagship books.

Well, at least that's a happy coincidence.

That is good news, Flux.

Smith's also done Green Arrow - avoid it like the plague.

I vote for Peter Kay.

To be fair to the man, Daredevil was Smith's first run on an established comic book. I thought it was a pile of shit, personally. Weak story, lots of dodgy bits that only worked the way they did for the sake of story convenience, when they really stretched reality. And, worst of all, he killed Karen Page off just to give the story a sense of gravitas that it really didn't deserve.

For my nickel, Green Arrow was substantially better. Yeah, the first story arc, 'Quiver', should've been 6 issues instead of 9, but it was a pretty solid tale and I liked his humorous handling of the characters. Maybe it's just that Giffen and DeMatteis (sp?) have prepared me to see more comedic takes on the DC characters. Maybe it's just that I care less about Oliver Queen than I do about Matt Murdock.

Or maybe Smith is actually getting better. It's not impossible, is it...?

Back on topic:

Not that I'd want to see Smith on X-Men.

About the only writer that'd make me stick around on the book is Michael Chabon, but I hear he's tied up with some other comics project.

If Whedon writes it I may peruse the first trade and see what I think of it.

The Green Arrow ish with the JLA was very good; it played to Smith's strengths - that is, funny dialogue. Other than that it's full of tedious Silver Age moralising, and just not very good.

Spaniel
20:03 / 20.11.03
Haven't read Smith's Green Arrow so I'll reserve judgement.

On the Karen page thing: I know, wasn't it awful? So, so, so cheap.

As for dialogue, I agree that the guy can elicit a laugh from time to time, but an occasional giggle doesn't make up for legions of talking heads.

Back on topic, as much as I love Whedon - yes, I'm a hardcore Buffy cheerleader - read the last ish of whatsamacallit (you know, with the axe) recently. Sadly, didn't get into it; seemed a tad messy.

Here's hoping Jossy (assuming he's got the gig) can pull it off.

Kevin Smith, Paul Jenkins, Joe Michael Straczynski...who cares? They're all the same sort of HOT WIZARD writers who're average at best.

Whedon on New X-Men? I don't know if I like that idea.

Now, I am in fact Scotland's biggest Buffy/Angel fan, but my opinions on Joss have changed of late.

Once high in my personal pantheon of household gods, he has fallen from grace of late. 'Firefly' was pretty bad. The delay on 'Fray' was terribly annoying, and the last issue very predictable (Urkonn was bad! The horror!) The final episode of 'Buffy' was the most disappointing thing I have ever seen - we expect more of Joss than a big and pointless fight, and I have an odd feeling that the utter brilliance of season 5 of 'Angel' has very little to do with Joss. Actually it suddenly occurs that the Buffy finale seems to have been written as is purely to get the point where Spike sacrifices himself. 'Chosen' exists not to end Buffy ('The Gift' did that better!) but TO SET UP ANGEL SEASON FIVE. Goddamn. That's kinda off-topic. Ahem.

Despite this...he's probably the best candidate. And 'Fray' was generally pretty good. I think I'm mainly annoyed 'cos I'd figured for stopping reading New X after Grant left...of course, it's only a rumour.

So if it annoys u to read X-Men, why don't u just stop reading? Cause that's a pretty "non-comment" comment if u ask me... "I was so happy to drop New X-Men after Grant left, oh but now I'm annoyed I might have to keep reading it". WTF is that? If it bothers u, just drop the gad damn book, and dry those tears, mate.

On another note... I wouldn't be surprised if the next artist on the title turns out to be Brandon Peterson, given he just signed an exclusive with Marvel and his "new, high profile projects" are gonna be announced soon. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong, but he'd be pretty sweet on NXM imo.

"See me for what I am, OK?"
22:30 / 04.12.03
I wasn't being entirely serious about the "damn, i'll have to keep reading it" bit. I just keep forgetting that something that would be obviously meant as a joke if I said it (or if people who knew me were reading it) may not come across that way to everyone. Sorry if I offended.

And for the record, if Whedon or whoever writes a good yarn, I'll read it. If not, it's dropped like anything that someone throws to me.

I think I saw on the Pulse t'other day that Claremont/Davis are confirmed for Uncanny. I will probably look at that at least.

But I hope my pamphlet days are over.

Ugh. Brandon Peterson's already had two turns at the X-Men already and choked both times. It'd be stupid to give it to him again.

Mike-O
15:01 / 06.12.03
Yeah, I guess you're right there, Fluxmatic. Besides it's kinda being hinted that he's gonna do some Dr. Strange series... which would be cool to see him on.

Matthew Fluxington
15:08 / 06.12.03
From what I've read, it looks like this is what is going to happen:

Uncanny X-Men will be Chris Claremont & Alan Davis, with most of the cast of X-Treme (Storm, Rogue, Gambit, Kitty, Cannonball, Bishop) moving over to Uncanny with whoever from Austen's cast is going to stick around. (Nightcrawler probably, who knows about the rest of them...) X-Treme will likely be cancelled.

New X-Men will be the new writer with Salvador Larocca. Larocca will have the distinction of having illustrated all three of the major X-titles.

I think this is a great plan, actually. You get Classic X-Men, and New X-Men, and no awkward third title and no Claremont. Essentially, they seem to be ditching what has been Uncanny X-Men, which hasn't made sense for three or four years now. Thank god.

Matthew Fluxington
15:12 / 06.12.03
Um, whoops, I meant "no Austen," not "no Claremont." We'll have plenty of Claremont.

Our Lady of The Two Towers

You'll be choking on his Claremont.
