According to the rumour mill.

It's a rumour that he may, possibly, be doing two issues.

You/a moderator may want to amend the title/first post/abstract to reflect this.

Well, it's apparently supposed to be someone totally new and surprising. I keep thinking that maybe it's someone like Neil Gaiman or the Straczynski guy, but probably not. Let's just hope that it's not Kevin Smith.

The Falcon

I keep thinking it'll be Joss Whedon.

But the fact Marvel are keeping this under wraps after touting an announcement ages ago suggests something may have fallen through with this 'new, jaw-dropping, fuck me!' writer.

Oh wow, I never thought of Joss Whedon. He'd be so perfect. I'd buy that.

Duncan, I think you may be wrong about things going wrong - it's a good idea to keep things under wrap for a long time so that it doesn't upstage Grant's grand finale, and so that the issues come out very soon after the announcement is made, so that it comes out right when people are most excited about it rather than having a few months of lag time where people can forget about it/cool down. I think Marvel wants to make a big announcement and have people rush out and buy it right away. Having a fill-in probably just means things ran behind schedule and weren't ready straight away. The same thing happened when Scott Lobdell had a three month fill-in before Grant and Joe Casey started.

If it is Joss, I'll be so excited there'll be at least 5 fights. But, that said, I've never read Fray and I don't know how good he is at writing funnybooks.

Question: Can Austen completely wreck NXM in the span of two issues? It'll be interesting to see if he manages to.

Gaiman has been pretty adamant in his denial about being Morrison's follow-up on NXM. Which could be classic misdirection or, you know, the truth. I'd be interested to read his take, but I can't say that I'd be excited.

Whedon would make me ecstatic. The "big surprise" angle seems to suggest that it might be someone who doesn't generally work w/in the field.

I think the greenlight for a Firefly movie would have effectively put the KiBosh on Mr. Whedon. My money's on Soderbergh. The man is never too busy. It looks as if he'll be directing every episode of K Street (he's done every one so far), so, you know, it doesn't seem like he's keen on the idea of taking time off. Why not write a monthly comic book?

Of course Austen will destroy it. Did you read those two issues of Ultimate X-Men he did?

*shudder*

Okay. Just checked with my Oujia Board. Odd. It gave me an "E", wigged out twice in the same direction, and then "I" "S".

E _ _ I S.

But which consonant was it looking for? Which one....?

Ha! I hope that Ellis does it, just so he can look like the biggest sell-out in the whole world.

Actually, no, I hope that it's not Ellis, because in a way, that'd be kinda worse than full-time Austen.

Oh God no. Oh God no . Oh God no.

He's nicking a certain couple of fan faves too, if rumours are to be believed.

Quite possibly the only person who could get me to eat my words and NOT drop New X-men once Grant's left is Joss.
If it is Austen then I shall continue happily and save myself more money each month and spend it on drugs and ruination instead.

Oh, shit.

I've got it!

Wait for it... Wait for it...

ROB. FUCKING. LIEFELD.

Can't be Ellis, he has an exclusivity contract with DC, i think.

oh god, not Liefeld, pelase not, i think I would prefer Austen...

If it's not Ellis, well that leaves... hahahahahahaha. That'd probably be worth staying on for. Wolverine's guest spot in Punisher was beyond priceless.

Whedon works because he is a big comics geek, wrote the intro to the Earth X tpb and I'm sure I've seen plot devices straight out of Claremont era X-Men in Buffy and Angel. I suggest the dropping of ball, Flux, because Marvel were def-o going to tell everyone about it at WizardWorld Chicago(?) and proceeded not to.

Matthew Fluxington
00:51 / 14.10.03
Not to play Marvel's Advocate, but maybe they hadn't finalized the contract/had a different promotional plan in mind.

Whedon actually wrote an early version of the X-Men film. He's a huge X-Men fan, and admits that a lot of Buffy was based on the Claremont X-Men of the 70s and 80s. I get the feeling that if he was offered and was able to do it, he'd probably love the opportunity of writing the X-Men for a few years.

He'd definitely bring in some new readers.

I'm very much hoping that it is him.

Matthew Fluxington
00:52 / 14.10.03
And if it is Whedon, I really hope that he has Nightcrawler and Kitty Pryde in his cast, because I think that he'd do some amazing things with the two of them.

Wedon's gone off the boil a bit thought- season 3 of Buffy was perfect, then it went beyond sucking to new level of terribleness from 4 throught to whenever they finaly put it out of it's misery. I'd worry if he got his hands on Kitty, because I can just see her turning into a terrible willow substitute. He wouldn't thought, because Claremont won't give up any of his characters.

If he could recapture that spark though, hoo boy...

Garth Ennis is a no-no, he hates mutant comics.

It is unlikely to be Whedon though... Buffy went rubbish because he was too busy with other commitments (films, Firefly, Angel, Fray, etc) so I doubt he'd add something like the X-men to his bow at a time when he's cutting down on his workload.
It must be noted however he did write that terrible line from X-men (the film) that Storm says about toads and lightning.

Though he did write the good line which Wolverine says to prove he's not Mystique...

To add a spectacularly speculative speculation into the fray: the other non-comicbook writer who is both a huge comic book geek who wrote an early draft of the X-MEN movie and who would ensure a high level of press interest is: Michael Chabon.

(Storm's line about toads and lightning was supposed to be delivered flippantly. So it's all Halle Berry's fault.)

Actually, Runce, if it is Whedon there will be at least 10 fights.

Fucking good christing god, I hope it's Whedon. All you naysayers will be beaten down when battle commences.

Did that ouija board have any real-life sources?

There are very few people in comicdom, it seems, who actually know who this mystery writer will be. Mark Millar just said "I can't believe they got this guy, I don't know how the hell they got him" or words to that affect.

And it's not Gaiman.

Ellis? Ennis? (I don't want to see Garth Ennis ever write the X-Men, I doubt most fans do either) Whedon? (Doubtful because of the FIREFLY movie, as many have said) Chabon? I doubt it also. Who does that leave??

S'Millar, innit? Classic misdirection.

On Joss Whedon's ability to write comics - I just recently illustrated a short Buffy-related story written by Whedon (Tales Of The Vampires #1 from Dark Horse - on sale in December, kids! Plug Plug!), and it's one of the best scripts I've ever had the pleasure to draw.

I doubt I'll read New X-Men any more once Grant's gone, regardless of who his replacement is, but I definitely think Joss is a good comics writer.

Millar? I'd like to read him on XM, not precisely because I liked his meliphluous UXM. If its him, then I am in favor.

If it really isn’t going to be Gaiman, I thing they should get Tori Amos to write it, because it’d be, y’know, interesting

Frank Miller writing the X-Men would be a terrible idea.

They should let me have a go at the book. Every issue would feature a chain fight. BWS on art.
